The Ascension Loom began with a cook.

"Maya Ortiz," Principal Reed called.

A nervous girl with a red braid stepped into the golden field surrounding the obelisk. Light climbed from her shoes to the top of her head. A moment later, a thin status display appeared above her.

Civilian Class Acquired: Culinary Specialist.

Her friends applauded. A few boys laughed anyway. Maya ignored them, managed a tight smile, and hurried off the platform.

The next student awakened as a physical therapist. The student after that became a warehouse coordinator. Reed kept his speech about every contribution mattering ready, but the crowd understood the numbers. Only about one student in ten received a combat or support class. Those were the people who earned hunting licenses, entered Rifts, and had a chance to get rich before twenty-five.

Then Dorian Cross stepped forward.

Dorian was the other Apex candidate in Northbridge's graduating class. He had never hidden the fact that he considered Adrian a rival. Tall, sharp featured, and already dressed in a black coat cut like a hunter's uniform, he walked into the Loom as though it had been built for him alone.

The sky dimmed.

Not much. Just enough for the courtyard to fall quiet.

Gold light rose from the obelisk and folded around Dorian in the shape of a hunting bird. Pressure prickled over Adrian's skin.

Combat Class Acquired: Shade Runner.

Cheers broke out. A rare combat class. A pair of pale energy blades formed at Dorian's hips. He stepped from the light with a satisfied expression and glanced at Adrian.

"Try not to embarrass the rest of us," Dorian said.

Adrian offered him a flat look. In his first life, he had spent too much energy caring what Dorian thought. This time, his attention stayed on the number rising at the edge of his vision.

More than eleven hundred experience points already.

At this rate, he would have over thirty thousand by midnight.

No hunter in the country would walk away from that much experience.

Names continued. Some students cried with joy. Some tried to hide disappointment. Lucas went near the end, swaggering into the Loom with his split lip covered by a small healing strip.

No omen shook the courtyard when he entered.

Combat Class Acquired: Ember Arcanist.

A red crystal formed above Lucas's palm and threw sparks across his knuckles. His grin returned at once. The students around him applauded, and he turned so Adrian could see every second of it.

"Looks like I won after all," Lucas called.

Adrian did not answer.

Principal Reed's voice carried across the courtyard. "Adrian Vale."

The line opened before him.

For the first time since waking, fear slipped through Adrian's certainty.

He needed the same class.

It sounded insane, even to him. Every part of his previous life told him to pray for anything else. But he knew what lay beneath the class's worthless surface. He knew what he had failed to discover until the last morning of his life.

Adrian stepped into the Loom.

The gold vanished.

Darkness rose from the stone beneath his shoes, swallowing the platform in a column of blue black fire. Gasps rose from the courtyard. Above him, the clouds twisted into the image of a massive skull, empty sockets staring down at the school.

Principal Reed went still.

Lucas's mouth opened in delighted disbelief.

Adrian stood in the cold. Something ancient brushed the edge of his thoughts. It did not speak in words. It offered recognition.

Then the darkness collapsed.

Unique Combat Class Acquired: Gravecaller.

The courtyard erupted, but not with applause.

"No way."

"That is a real class?"

"Isn't that the one in the old reports? The hunter who got killed by a level-one monster?"

Lucas laughed first. Others joined him.

Principal Reed's shoulders sank. A minute earlier, he had looked ready to send a triumphant message to every local station. Now he stared at the result as if the Loom had personally betrayed him.

Adrian opened his status window.

Name: Adrian Vale.

Aptitude: Apex.

Class: Gravecaller. Unique.

Level: 1.

Power: 1.

Agility: 1.

Focus: 1.

Vitality: 1.

Bound Dead: 0 of 10.

Starting Skills: None.

Unassigned Attribute Points: 6.

The window was as ugly as he remembered. A normal combat class began with five points in every attribute and at least one useful skill. A Gravecaller began with the physical durability of wet paper.

There was one difference the others could not see. The word Unique glowed beside his class. As long as Adrian lived, no second Gravecaller could awaken.

He placed all six free points into Agility.

His body lightened at once. The crowd still saw a joke, but Adrian felt the change in the way his feet settled on stone and his shoulders moved beneath his jacket. Speed would keep him alive until he had an army.

"Our star student comes back," Lucas said as Adrian left the platform. "I guess the universe has a sense of humor."

"A comedian with standards," Adrian said. "Which is why it gave you fire instead of a personality."

Lucas's face darkened.

Principal Reed raised his clipboard before a second fight could begin. "Lucas Voss, record your class with Ms. Bell. The remaining students will proceed in order."

The ceremony continued, but nobody stopped looking at Adrian. Their stares followed him as he returned to the line. Some carried pity. Most carried amusement.

He let them have it.

The Continuum count reached eighteen hundred.

At level one, the weak were expected to beg stronger hunters for a place at the edge of their parties. Adrian had done that once. He had thanked people for scraps of experience and apologized whenever his useless class slowed them down.

He would not do it again.

He closed his status window and watched the black residue of the Ascension fade from the ground.

Around him, everyone was trying to decide whether the Gravecaller's appearance had been a disaster or a spectacle.

Adrian knew better.

It had been an invitation.

The Guild Management Office occupied the least magical building Adrian had entered all year.It stood between a tax clinic and a dentist in a gray downtown tower. Its lobby had fluorescent lights, plastic chairs, a metal detector, and a counter marked NEW LICENSES. The only sign that hunters came through the building at all was the reinforced ceiling, which had clearly been replaced after someone had once tested a combat skill indoors.Ben stared at the line of applicants waiting beneath a number display."We fought a dragon in a train terminal," he said. "Now we need ticket number eighty-four to ask permission to have a name.""Civilization is beautiful," Zoe replied."Civilization is cruel."Their group had come prepared. Nora carried the field safety plan. Mara had a list of emergency contacts and medical coverage. Zoe had three folders of funding disclosures, projected expenses, and an operations outline that made the future Wayline Guild look as though it had existed for years. A

  • Chapter 79: Zoe Park's Proposal

Zoe Park did not knock. She called from the sidewalk, announced that she had brought breakfast, and somehow convinced Marcus to buzz her into the building before Adrian had finished reading Captain Finch's reply about the man with the black coin.By the time Adrian opened the apartment door, Zoe was standing in the hall with a cardboard tray of bagels, two coffees, and a folder thick enough to qualify as a blunt weapon."Before you say no, the bagels are from Harbor Street," she said."Before I say no to what?""Excellent. You have not said no yet. This is already progress."Marcus took the coffee from her with the easy suspicion of a man accepting a peace offering from someone he expected to cause trouble. "You work at the Hunters Exchange.""I work near the Hunters Exchange," Zoe said. "Sometimes I work for it. Sometimes it works for me. It depends which department is asking.""That answer explains nothing.""Then we are getting along perfectly."Adrian stepped aside before the conv

  • Chapter 78: The Visitor at Breakfast

The morning after the blackout, someone knocked on Adrian's apartment door at eight o'clock and then kept knocking with the determined rhythm of a person who had already decided he would not be ignored.Marcus looked up from the breakfast table. "Are you expecting another dragon?""I hope not.""That answer should be no."Adrian checked the peephole, then the small ward Nora had etched beside the frame after the echo wraith attack. The ward showed two familiar blue outlines in the hall. One belonged to Nate Holloway, a former Northbridge classmate Adrian had not seen since before the first Rift season. The other stood half a step behind him and seemed to be trying very hard to become part of the wallpaper.Adrian opened the door.Nate brightened immediately. He had always looked like someone assembled out of elbows, enthusiasm, and badly chosen sneakers. His hair was longer than Adrian remembered, and he wore a new jacket with an amateur hunter patch stitched crookedly onto the sleeve

  • Chapter 77: The Night Sends Its Ghosts

The blackout began at 2:13 in the morning.Adrian knew the exact time because he was awake, sitting at the kitchen table with the black coin sealed inside a Blue Banner evidence case on the counter. Finch had allowed him to keep it for one night under a monitoring order after Nora argued that the frequency might respond only to the people who had first activated it. Two agents were stationed in an unmarked car outside Marcus Vale's apartment building. Three wards guarded the windows. It was not enough to make sleep come easily.Marcus found him staring at the evidence case and set down two mugs of coffee."You know that is not an improvement over sleep," his father said."It is decaf.""Then it is an insult and not an improvement."Adrian smiled despite himself. Marcus had started saying things like that more often since the Bellwether incident. He had not stopped worrying. He had simply learned that being frightened for his son did not require acting as though Adrian was made of glas

  • Chapter 76: The Vosses Owe an Answer

Gareth Voss arrived at Blue Banner headquarters with six lawyers, two public relations consultants, and the expression of a man inconvenienced by weather. He was not under arrest. That mattered. The evidence from Bellwether connected Voss Strategic Holdings to the auction money, but it did not yet prove that Gareth had authorized the transaction or knew what the broker planned to sell. Rook had explained the distinction three times. Adrian understood it each time. He simply did not like it.From the observation gallery above the conference room, he watched Gareth take his seat at the steel table below. Lucas sat beside him in a navy blazer, composed and pale. Evan Rusk stood near the rear wall with the foundation security staff, his face unreadable."This is not a trial," Finch reminded Adrian."I know.""It is a voluntary evidence conference. They can leave if they choose.""I know.""And you are not supposed to be here."Adrian looked at her.Finch sighed. "The gallery is sealed. Yo

  • Chapter 75: Do Not Call Her a Monster

The coin did not belong to any currency system Adrian recognized. It was the size of a silver dollar and cold enough to sting through his glove. One face showed the rail spiral they had seen at Bellwether and in the Soulwake response. The other showed a winged shape curled around a black sun. There was no serial number, no mint mark, and no aether signature strong enough for Nora to trace."It is a calling card," Dorian said."That is worse than evidence," Ben replied. "Evidence helps you arrest someone. Calling cards mean someone wants you to know they can reach you."They returned to Bellwether before evening. Finch wanted the coin locked away, and Adrian wanted to see whether Emberwake reacted to it. The drake had been moved to a temporary Blue Banner containment hangar outside the city, a cavernous old aircraft depot with reinforcement wards on every wall. The word containment bothered Adrian more each time he heard it.The official forms called Emberwake a high-risk nonhuman enti
