The sun is the core and basic needs of a human being to survive. It provides nutrients and warmth also said to be the origin of life in Skyscraper. It was connected to the source of magic and sorcery. Without it acting as a medium, mana wouldn't be produced from the environment. In and which if you looked at it into a chef's perspective, it was the important condiment needed to make a dish flavorful. 

Mana is the requirement to do spells and heal someone. It's the basic requirement to do magic and the sun is the provider producer of it. 

I don't study college but in our highschool biology, Mrs. Reyes told us that the most important star between moon and the sun was the provider of vitamins and warmth. I wouldn't argue with that.
