CHAPTER 12

Michael Guterson didn't know when those words slipped out of his mouth. Mr. Victor and the walls might have just heard him.

Dave turned, giving Michael Guterson a depressing look.

"Gutter,"

But that was just where he should be. A form of concentration and understanding tends to be at the particular place Michael loves to sit. He can't even lie to himself.

He headed straight there and immediately made grasp of a seat.

Coles had just changed the look of its library. The chairs looked as if they were brought straight from the work area.

The seats are padded with soft foams to give a different kind of comfort while students study; an area for the back, and an armrest just so one wouldn't get tired on time.

Michael Guterson's seat was close, but adjacent to Dave's.
