The front wheel of the sports bike bit into the pavement as the engine shrieked toward its redline.

Cross-traffic from the right exploded into motion just as the countdown timer hit zero. Austin’s world narrowed instantly to a single thread: speed, trajectory, and timing.

“Lean!” he yelled into the intercom.

Millie didn't hesitate, pressing her body flat against his back and leaning with him as he threw the bike hard to the right. The machine dipped so low the peg scraped against the asphalt in a shower of sparks.

A silver sedan surged directly into their path, its driver slamming on the horn as the motorcycle sliced through a gap barely half a meter wide. Tires screamed, burning rubber filled the air, and the wind tore at their jackets like claws. Then, in a heartbeat of pure acceleration, they shot clear of the intersection.

Behind them, the lead black SUV was not as nimble.

It committed to the same narrow opening half a second too late. The silver sedan plowed squarely into the SUV’s front quarter panel with a thunderous impact of tearing metal and shattering glass. The heavy SUV spun violently sideways, skidding across two lanes before slamming into the steel base of a traffic light pole.

Millie shut her eyes against the deafening crunch, her arms locked around Austin’s chest like iron bands.

Austin straightened the bike without shedding a mile an hour and checked his left mirror. The secondary SUV hadn't stopped; it mounted the concrete center divider with a violent bounce, throwing sparks into the air as it smashed back down onto the pavement to continue the pursuit. Behind it, the high-pitched wail of a police cruiser’s siren sliced through the morning air as a patrol car joined the chaotic trail of smoke and debris.

“Austin... they’re still coming!” Millie gasped over the roar of the wind.

“Hold on,” he commanded, his voice cold and stripped of fear.

Instead of continuing toward the financial district, Austin flicked the handlebars to the left, taking a sharp turn down an access road that plunged them straight into the Riverside Industrial District.

The glass towers and busy crosswalks instantly gave way to aging brick warehouses, rusted shipping containers, and long-abandoned factories. The streets here were wider, emptier, and cast in the long shadows of overhead gantry cranes.

“Where are we?” Millie asked, lifting her head slightly against the rushing air.

“Industrial grid,” Austin said, eyes sweeping every alley and loading bay. “Fewer civilians.”

Behind them, the siren shifted pitch as the police cruiser pushed into the district, followed closely by the remaining black SUV. But Austin noticed a subtle change in the SUV’s positioning—it was no longer aggressively pressing his rear wheel. It was holding a steady, calculated distance, herding him deeper into the maze of warehouses.

His stomach tightened as the realization hit. *They aren't trying to ram us anymore. They're steering us.*

“They’ve stopped closing in,” Millie said, checking her side mirror. “Did we lose them?”

“No,” Austin said quietly. “They’re positioning.”

He eased off the throttle slightly, catching the reflection of the road ahead in the cracked glass of a shuttered textile plant. Two blocks down, a fresh black SUV rolled out from behind a row of stacked shipping containers, stepping across the center line to block the narrow access bridge leading toward the eastern highway.

A trap. One hunter closing fast from behind, another blocking the only bridge ahead, and a police cruiser roaring down the center lane between them.

Austin’s pulse slowed to a steady, rhythmic thud. He reached down to the handlebar console, clicking the transmission down two gears to keep the engine screaming in its powerband.

“Austin...” Millie’s voice was barely a whisper against the back of his neck. “What do we do?”

Austin locked his eyes on the narrowing bridge ahead. “We don't stop.”

They don’t.Her eyes move to the envelope sitting on the small table beside the bed. She has counted the money three times. She knows exactly how much is inside. Enough to clear the most urgent debt. Enough to stop the calls. Enough to breathe for a little while. That should make her feel relieved. Instead, she feels sick.Sofia turns onto her side and pulls the blanket higher. She closes her eyes. Austin’s face appears immediately—pale beneath the hospital lights, motionless, vulnerable. She sees him exactly as he looked earlier that evening. Someone who could see Austin every day. Someone who could report every change before the doctors made any announcement. Someone who would not attract attention. His eyes moved to the man standing across from him.“I need a nurse.”The man looked surprised. “A nurse?”“Someone who works in Austin Miller’s ward.”“We already have men watching the hospital.”“Outside,” Gabriel said. His voice stayed calm. “I need someone inside.”The man understood. “What exactly do you want her to do?”Gabriel leaned back. “Nothing dramatic. I don’t want Austin harmed.
