After Murphy exposed his intentions, Peter forced out an awkward laugh.

"Come on, we're both men here. Those kinds of thoughts are normal." Unfortunately for him, Murphy wasn't in the mood for excuses.

"Listen carefully." His voice turned cold.

"I don't care what you're thinking. "But if you mess up Mrs. Ava's contract, don't bother coming back to work tomorrow."

Peter's smile vanished. Before he could explain himself, the call ended. He stared at his phone.

For the first time that night, he felt uneasy.

Murphy wasn't someone who lost his temper easily. If he was this angry, then someone bigger had already gotten involved. And there was only one person Murphy feared that much.

David Torres.

The most powerful businessman in Lake City. Peter swallowed hard.

Just who exactly was Ava?

Without wasting another second, he hurried after her.

"Mrs. Ava! Wait!"

Ava stopped and turned around immediately. The moment she saw him rushing over, her guard went up.

"What do you want now?"

She took a step back.

"Keep bothering me and I'll call the police."

Peter nearly cried.

"Mrs. Ava, you've misunderstood." His earlier arrogance was completely gone.

"We're here to discuss business, aren't we?"

He forced out a smile.

"I just reviewed the contract again." "Everything looks perfect."

Ava frowned. A few minutes ago, this man had practically been chasing her out.

Now he was acting like a different person.

Still, she wasn't about to question good luck. She took out the contract.

"Fine, let's finish this."

Peter grabbed the documents immediately.

Without even looking through most of the pages, he signed his name. His hand was shaking the entire time. A few seconds later, he handed the contract back.

"Done."

Ava blinked.

"That's it?"

"That's it."

Peter stood up so quickly he nearly knocked over his chair. Then he rushed toward the exit. It looked less like he had signed a contract and more like he was escaping a disaster. Ava stood there holding the papers. For several seconds, she simply stared at the signature. Then a smile slowly appeared on her face. The deal was done.

Her commission would soon hit her account.

For the first time in days, she could finally breathe easier. But as the excitement settled, confusion took its place. Something wasn't right. Peter's attitude had changed too suddenly. Someone had clearly pressured him.

But who?

A face appeared in her mind. Scott Black.

The last time they met, she had casually mentioned this project. Could he have remembered?

Could he have stepped in to help?

The more she thought about it, the more reasonable it sounded. Then another face appeared in her mind.

Thomas.

Her expression immediately cooled.

No.

Absolutely not.

There was no way Thomas had anything to do with this. All these years, she had been the one carrying the family.

The one paying bills.

The one working overtime.

The one worrying about money.

Thomas couldn't even solve his own problems. How could he possibly help with a deal worth hundreds of thousands?

Ava shook her head.

No matter how she looked at it, Scott made far more sense. When she got the chance, she would thank him properly. Little did she know that the person she was grateful to wasn't Scott at all. And the person who had quietly solved everything for her was the husband she called useless every day.

Meanwhile, Thomas had no idea what Ava was thinking. His phone suddenly rang.

David.

Thomas answered immediately.

"What now?"

David chuckled.

"Come meet a client with me."

"No."

"I already know that tone." David cut him off before he could continue.

"You promised to help me."

"And haven't I helped you a lot recently?"

Thomas sighed. The old man wasn't wrong.

"Fine."

"I'll go."

David instantly sounded excited.

"Good."

"I'll be there in five minutes." The call ended. Thomas shook his head and laughed. Sometimes David acted less like an executive and more like an excited child.

A few minutes later, a black Range Rover pulled up outside. Thomas got in.

Inside the car, Thomas stretched lazily.

"So who are we meeting?" David smiled while driving.

"A friend."

"What kind of friend?"

"The troublesome kind."

Thomas rolled his eyes. David continued,

"He's having some business issues and wants my advice."

"Besides that, he's pretty famous in the calligraphy world."

"Lots of people respect him." Thomas wasn't particularly interested. "As long as I don't have to give a speech." David laughed.

"No speeches."

"Good."

Thomas closed his eyes.

"Then wake me up when we get there." A few moments later, he was asleep.

Outside a large office building downtown, dozens of people had already gathered.

Luxury cars lined the street. Many passersby stopped to watch. Among the crowd stood a middle-aged man in an expensive suit.

Mr. Keira.

One of the city's most successful businessmen. Beside him stood his son, Andrew.

Andrew wiped sweat from his forehead.

"Dad."

"Who exactly are we waiting for?"

"We've been standing here forever." Mr. Keira shot him a warning look.

"Watch your mouth."

Andrew immediately shut up. Mr. Keira lowered his voice.

"This partnership is important."

"Very important."

"If you offend the wrong person today, even I won't be able to save you." Andrew swallowed.

Now he was curious. Who could make his father this cautious?

Back in the car, Thomas slowly opened his eyes. The car had stopped. Looking through the window, he frowned. A huge crowd stood outside the building. Luxury cars were parked everywhere. People were waiting as if some celebrity was about to arrive. Thomas looked at David.

"I thought you said this was a private meeting." David glanced ahead and smiled.

"It was."

Then he looked at the crowd again.

"Looks like our friend takes this partnership very seriously." Thomas followed his gaze.

A faint smile appeared on his lips. For some reason, he had a feeling this meeting was about to become very interesting.

"Dad, you're not old at all! I'm still so young, I definitely want to grow up under your protection." She was really worried that Old Mr. Blackwood would start assigning company tasks right away. Being her age was a disadvantage, and she feared that most responsibilities would fall on her two older brothers. She didn't want to be under their care, especially not the kind of care they offered."Stop with the sweet talk and sit tight. I'm discussing something serious here." Old Mr. Blackwood's tone remained gentle, but Allison knew his temperament all too well. She quickly created some distance and sat up straight. When he spoke like this, she didn't dare to keep joking around."Recently, the headquarters has been holding a shareholders' meeting. What do you all think about it? I want to hear your thoughts, one by one."Hearing him say this brought back memories of the past. He often liked to pose questions to each of his children, encouraging them to share their opinions, and those who

Lucas stood up abruptly."So this is the attitude you bring when asking for cooperation today? If that's the case, I don't see any reason to continue this discussion."Clinton quickly followed her, forcing a smile as he walked alongside her."Auntie Clair, that's not what I meant at all. I just wanted you to know that we're in this together, and we can't afford to play both sides."He blocked Lucas's path, but instead of leaving, he shot her a cold smile. He had underestimated her. He initially thought she was just a stubborn mule, oblivious to family arrangements and overly ambitious. But now, it was clear she had some insight and was pushing him to make a choice. However, he couldn't give up on her just yet.Where did he get the idea that she was still wavering between him and her father?"I believe my cooperation with you over the past few days has shown no signs of doubt. Why do you think I would make a different choice between you and your father?"After saying this, he knew Luc

"This matter doesn't require too much tension until David and I reach a specific conclusion." Sometimes, stirring the pot requires a careful approach."Should we keep everything on hold? Do we need to pay attention to the other shareholders and board members?"A shareholder meeting isn't a one-man show; it involves considering others."No need. I'm targeting what Lucas cares about, and he's the boss. It's best to take down the leader first." Thomas didn't have the energy to manage so many shareholders and board members. It would require a lot of manpower, and he clearly couldn't trust too many people."The conditions we need to discuss with David won't be simple, but as long as we have this lead, that's enough."Lawrence nodded. Thomas had already spent enough time on company matters recently. It was unclear when the shift hadhappened, but the company was gradually coming under his control."Right now, the company is in a tense situation. You might not be able to take breaks on time,

  • CHAPTER 396

"Why is that?""Because your son is pretending to cooperate with me, while the real partnership is with Lucas. You should know how our boss feels about Lucas." At this point, David felt a surge of anger rising within him. He had been wondering why that kid would resort to such a foolish method. It turned out to be a double trap, like a mantis catching a cicada while the yellow sparrow waits behind. He had underestimatedthem, not realizing they had thoroughly figured out his bottom line."So, Miss Hutton is suggesting that I handle my son myself, which would benefit the headquarters and Mr. Thomas?"The use of the word "benefit" clearly indicated his dissatisfaction."Chairman David, why don't you understand my point? Think about it, if you align yourself with the headquarters, the real estate will be securely under your name, and the company will continue to grant you some authority. There won't be any major issues."The idea of "granting authority" was entirely the secretary's own s

  • CHAPTER 395

David was sipping his tea when a phone call came in. He picked up his phone; it was an internal call."What's going on? Is there a problem?" he asked."Chairman David, there are two people here to see you, a man and a woman. They didn't give specific names but chose the nearest private room. They're probably waiting for you." David’s interest was piqued."Alright, I understand.""I said, Old Mr. Blackwood, we agreed to meet for tea. You're not going to handle business, are you?""Not at all. You all continue your conversation; I'll step out for a bit." The old foxes knew his tone meant he was off to do something, so they decided not to press him further. David stepped out and intentionallyglanced at the private room ahead. As he approached the door, he made a bit of noise. The two people who had been staring at the entrance immediately noticed andstood up. When the door opened, there stood the very people they wanted tomeet. It seemed they were lucky; they had only waited about ten

"No need for that; a silent warning will suffice. He must have realized we know about him. As long as he doesn't make any major moves, we'll just pretend we're unaware and won't bother cutting off his surveillance again." Miss Hutton really couldn't understand what Thomas was up to. Lucas had his hands ineverything, even reaching into the company's surveillance system, yet Thomas remained calm and collected, not seeming to care at all.Was he just overly confident, or was there something else going on?"We'll wrap up our overtime here. Thanks for your hard work. After this, you should meet up with Lawrence and have him accompany you for the real estate matters. Those guys aren't exactly gentlemen, so as a woman, you should be cautious." Thomas stood up, straightening his clothes and grabbing his phone. He felt a bit uncomfortable having spent so much time at the office."Got it."The two of them headed downstairsand went their separate ways. Miss Hutton reached out to Lawrence."Th
