Chapter 4: “The Man He Really Is”

Ivy stared at the steel case sitting in the center of Jaxon’s empty apartment.

The rest of the place looked untouched by life — no clothes, no documents, no signs anyone had lived here for the past three years. It was sterile. Cold. Like a ghost had just vanished.

Her trembling fingers hovered over the latch.

She opened it.

Inside was a matte-black tablet, a leather-bound folder, and a single photograph.

The photo hit her like a punch to the chest.

It showed Jaxon — but not the Jaxon she knew. He wore a tactical vest, kneeling beside an overturned SUV. His face was bloodied, eyes blazing. Around him were men in masks—kneeling.

In submission.

Stamped at the bottom was a red seal: 9th Pavilion, Ghost Monarch.

She opened the folder next.

Her breath caught.

It held classified military contracts, photos of billion-dollar seizures, encryption clearances, and a target list—names crossed out in blood-red ink.

Ethan Xu was the most recent.

She dropped it all back into the case and staggered backward, one hand to her mouth.

Her husband… wasn’t just someone important.

He was something dangerous.

Meanwhile, across the city…

Xu Group HQ – Underground Chamber

Ethan Xu descended into the hidden chamber beneath his skyscraper, flanked by two private bodyguards. In front of him stood a wiry man with a scar across his left cheek — Anton, an ex-mercenary hacker known in the underworld as “The Scrambler.”

“You said you could find him,” Ethan growled.

“I said I could try,” Anton replied coolly. “But I didn’t expect your 'son-in-law' to be a shadow-ranked name. Every digital trail leads to encrypted dead ends. This guy’s buried in ghost layers. Whoever he is, he’s above military clearance.”

Ethan slammed his fist into the concrete wall.

“I need leverage. Anything.”

Anton raised an eyebrow. “There is one thing. A name popped up repeatedly in a hidden server we cracked—connected to the Ninth Pavilion. Ivy Lin.”

Ethan froze.

“His wife?”

Anton nodded. “Looks like she’s either the weakness—or the bait.”

Ethan’s lips twisted into a cruel smile. “Perfect. If I can’t attack the shadow… I’ll drag him into the light.”

Later That Night – Ivy’s Apartment

Ivy locked the case and tossed it under her bed, heart pounding in her throat. She didn’t know whether to scream, cry, or run.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed.

Unknown Number: You looked inside the case. Now you understand. Come to 87 Hanbei Street. Alone. Don’t tell anyone.

She bit her lip.

A part of her wanted to ignore it — to hide in denial. But something else stirred inside her now: the need to know the full truth.

Minutes later, she slipped on a coat and left.

Warehouse – 87 Hanbei Street

Ivy stepped into the dimly lit warehouse.

It was empty, except for a single hanging light above a leather chair.

Jaxon stood there, waiting.

But it wasn’t the Jaxon she’d known.

This man radiated control. He wore a black turtleneck beneath a tactical coat, hair swept back, no warmth in his eyes.

“I thought I married a man who couldn’t even afford lunch,” she whispered.

“You did,” he said. “That was the point.”

“And now you’re what… some underground king?”

“Ghost Monarch,” he corrected. “A title I buried three years ago.”

Ivy shook her head. “Why did you hide it from me?”

Jaxon stepped closer, voice low. “Because the man you were forced to marry was meant to die in silence. But now the enemy’s awake. Ethan knows. And he’s coming for you.”

Her breath caught.

“Ethan?”

Jaxon nodded. “I exposed him. He’ll retaliate.”

Suddenly, his phone buzzed.

He picked it up and his face darkened instantly.

Ivy could hear the voice on the other end:

“Sir. Ethan just moved. He kidnapped Ivy’s cousin, Aria Lin. Sent us a live feed. He says he’ll start sending pieces of her back unless you show up. Alone.”

Ivy’s legs buckled.

Jaxon crushed the phone in his fist.

No emotion. Just pure rage.

Then he turned to her, voice like thunder:

“Get in the car. We end this tonight.”

Back in Ethan’s private torture chamber, Aria whimpered beneath a dangling light, bound to a chair.

Ethan smiled into the camera.

“Come, Ghost Monarch,” he said. “Let’s see how far you’ll go for family.”

Behind him… a bomb timer started ticking.

Chapter 30 Jaxon Lin didn’t blink as the elevator doors closed behind him. He stood at the edge of something deeper than any battlefield he’d ever walked into — and this time, it was personal. The Obelisk’s lower level wasn’t a floor. It was a tomb. The air turned metallic the moment he stepped out of the shaft. Fluorescent lights flickered above, casting a sickly white glow across concrete walls laced with biohazard markings. Sirens wailed somewhere above, muffled by layers of reinforced steel. But down here… the silence felt alive. Behind him, Mira adjusted her grip on the rifle. Her hands were steady, but her breathing wasn’t. “You sure your wife’s sister is down here?” Jaxon didn’t answer. He stared at the row of containment pods lining the chamber wall — human-shaped silhouettes frozen inside them. He moved forward. Not fast. Not slow. Just enough that his b

CHAPTER 29 SAFEHOUSE, 4:16 A.M. — Location Redacted It was still dark when Ava opened her eyes. Not the kind of dark that made you reach for the light switch, but the kind that sank into your bones. Cold. Sticky. Familiar. She didn’t know where she was at first. The ceiling above her was low, wood-paneled, uneven—like a bunker or… a storage cabin? She tried to sit up. Failed. Pain laced her body like she'd been hit by a train. Then came the voice. Low. Deep. Familiar in the worst way. “Back where we started, aren’t we?” Her pulse spiked. She looked toward the door. No one. “You didn’t think I’d go quietly, did you?” She gritted her teeth. “I’m awake now,” she said out loud. “You don’t control me anymore.” “Don’t I?”

CHAPTER 28 OBELISK CORE – 00:56 The red digits of the countdown pulsed like a heartbeat over the chamber wall. The walls around them shivered with each second lost. Somewhere deep in the structure, a bass-toned groan echoed—metal under pressure. Jaxon clutched Ava tightly to his chest as Mira pulled the access panel open. “This leads to the lift shaft,” she said. “It’s vertical. Sealed off on grid level three, but if we climb fast—” “We don’t have a choice,” Jaxon said, stepping past her. Ava was still unconscious, but breathing. Her skin was warmer now. The glow that had once consumed her was gone. Whatever had snapped Rael’s hold—it left her drained. Mira slung her rifle over her shoulder. Her fingers trembled as she reloaded with one hand. “You good?” Jaxon asked as he crouched to lower Ava gently into Mira’s arms while he rigged a climbing line

CHAPTER 27 OBELISK CORE – 2:58 A.M. The floor vibrated beneath Jaxon’s boots. It wasn’t an earthquake. It was her. Ava. She stood twenty feet away, barefoot on steel, arms relaxed at her sides. Her golden irises flared like solar flares trapped in human eyes. But it wasn’t the light that made him pause—it was the absence of her. She looked like Ava. But she wasn’t standing like her. Wasn’t breathing like her. Her head tilted too precisely. Her eyes didn’t blink. Jaxon gripped The Warden, the pulseblade fused to his forearm. It hummed like it knew what it was meant to cut. “Ava,” he said quietly. “I know you’re still in there.” No answer. Her hand rose slowly. Two fingers flexed. Jaxon’s body seized. Like a vise clamped onto his chest, something inside him pulled tight. His muscles convulsed—not from pain

CHAPTER 26 [JAXON] Obelisk Perimeter – 2:17 A.M. Wind screamed through the skeletal ironwork of the decommissioned crane where Jaxon crouched. Every breath he drew burned with rust and ocean salt. From this height, the harbor looked like a choked throat of shadows—water black, fog rolling thick between the docked ships and Syndicate patrol drones. The Obelisk stood at the center, docked like a predator at rest. Monolithic, obsidian-black, covered in ripple armor and gleaming power nodes. It didn’t just tower. It waited. “This is madness,” Mira said behind him. Her voice was low, gruff. “You realize that, right?” Jaxon adjusted the strap of the tactical bag across his back. “That’s not new.” She huffed and checked the magazine of her rifle, her fingers moving faster than her expression did. She wasn’t really angry. She was scared. Jaxon didn’t blame

Lillian sat beside her sister, fingers twitching over Ava’s hand like she couldn’t quite make herself touch her. “Her skin’s cold,” she said softly. “Like… ice and static.” “She’s not stable,” Mira said. “That burst? It wasn’t just energy. It was a fail-safe. Something inside her is unlocking. And whatever
