CHAPTER 1

I wiped the last wet spot off the Westbridge University basketball court and stood up. My back hurt. My hands smelled like old soap and floor cleaner. In three hours I would turn eighteen, but nobody here cared.

Ryan Black walked in with two of his friends. He was the team captain, tall, loud, and always looking for someone to step on. Today that someone was me.

“Still cleaning floors, Carter?” Ryan laughed. He kicked a wet mop bucket so hard the dirty water spilled across the court I had just finished. “You missed a spot, servant boy.”

I clenched my jaw and said nothing. Fighting him would only get me fired. This job paid for my mother’s medicine and the small rent on our tiny apartment in Grandville. I needed every dollar.

Ryan stepped closer. “Say something. Or are you too scared?”

I kept my eyes on the floor. “I’ll clean it again.”

“That’s right. Stay in your place.” He shoved my shoulder hard enough to make me take two steps back. His friends laughed.

Elena Rose walked in right then. She was the cheer captain, the one person on campus who never treated me like garbage. She looked at the spilled water, then at Ryan.

“Leave him alone,” she said, voice calm but firm. “He’s doing his job.”

Ryan smirked. “Protecting the cleaner now? Cute.”

Elena didn’t back down. “Pick up the bucket and leave, Ryan.”

He stared at her for a second, then shrugged. “Whatever. It’s almost your birthday party tomorrow night. Don’t invite the trash.” He and his friends walked out, still laughing.

Elena looked at me. “You okay?”

I nodded. “Thanks. You didn’t have to do that.”

“Someone should.” She hesitated. “If you’re free tomorrow night… my birthday party is at the student hall. You can come if you want.”

I almost smiled. No one ever invited me anywhere. “I’ll think about it.”

She left. I went back to work, mopping the same floor twice.

My phone rang. Maya Collins. My girlfriend.

“Hey,” I answered, trying to sound normal.

“I need money,” she said right away. No hello. “One thousand for a red dress. The girls are all wearing red to Elena’s party. I can’t look cheap.”

I stopped mopping. “Maya, I only have a hundred left. That’s three days of pay.”

“Send it. I’ll figure out the rest.” Her voice was sharp.

I transferred the hundred dollars because I still believed she cared. Ten minutes later she called again.

“You only sent a hundred? Are you kidding me?”

“That’s all I have.”

She laughed, but it was mean. “You’re useless. I should have known.”

A man’s voice came through the phone in the background. I knew that voice. Ryan Black.

“Is that the cleaner?” Ryan asked, loud enough for me to hear. “Tell him he’s done. Nobody wants a broke boyfriend.”

Maya didn’t even try to hide it. “You’re right. Damon, we’re finished. Don’t call me again. Stay in the dirt where you belong.”

The call ended.

I stood in the middle of the empty court, phone in my hand. My chest felt tight. Three years with Maya. I had given her almost every extra dollar I earned. Now she was with Ryan, laughing at me like I was nothing.

I finished cleaning because I still needed the job. When I got back to my small rented room near campus, the ceiling was leaking again. Water dripped onto my thin mattress. I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall.

This was my life. Clean floors. Take insults. Watch the girl I loved choose the guy who stepped on me. My mother was sick. My father worked two jobs and still looked tired every time I saw him. I had nothing.

At midnight my phone buzzed.

Happy birthday message from the bank. Usual empty words. Then another alert popped up.

Credit: 100,000,000 dollars.

I blinked. Looked again. One hundred million.

My hands shook. This had to be a mistake. Banks don’t just drop that kind of money into a cleaner’s account.

I called the number listed under the message. A calm voice answered.

“Crownstone Bank. How may I help you?”

“I just got a credit alert for one hundred million. It has to be wrong.”

There was a short pause. “Mr. Damon Carter? The transfer is correct. It came from an authorized family account. Happy eighteenth birthday.”

Family account?

I hung up and stared at the number on the screen. One hundred million dollars. More money than I had ever dreamed of.

My phone rang again. Dad’s name lit up.

“Dad?” My voice came out rough.

“Happy birthday, son.” He sounded different. Stronger. “I know you saw the transfer. Don’t spend it yet. Come to the bank tomorrow morning. Bring your ID. We need to talk.”

“Dad… what is this?”

He was quiet for a second. “It’s the beginning of the truth. You’re not who you think you are, Damon. You’ve never been.”

The call ended.

I sat in the dark room with water still dripping from the ceiling. One hundred million dollars sat in my account. My father had just told me I was not the person I had always believed.

Outside, Grandville city lights blinked through the cracked window.

For the first time in my life, I had no idea who I really was.

And someone, somewhere, had just decided it was time for me to find out.
