CHAPTER 40
Dawn arrived pale and still. They packed quickly, speaking little. Each carried only what was necessary. Food, water, warm layers. No heavy bags. No unnecessary weight.Lin Hao checked the paper the older man had left. The words First Seal stood out sharp and clear. Beneath it was a single line, written small and faint.Where the river meets the oldest stone. He folded it away and met the others by the door. The disciple held the serpent figurine tucked inside his coat. Hale carried the disk wrapped in soft cloth. Xiao Man and his mother stood ready, their bags light in their hands."The river," Hale said as they set off. "There are four that run through the city. Which one is the oldest?""The one that flows beneath it," the disciple said. "Buried long ago, covered over when the first foundations were laid. Its name is almost forgotten."They took the quietest route back toward the city. The morning was cool, the streets slowly waking. They kept to the narrowest lanes, moving unseen,
CHAPTER 39
Morning broke clear and bright over the valley. Lin Hao was up before the sun, standing on the slope behind the cottage. He watched the light spill across the hills, gilding the treetops and touching the distant roofs of the city.He felt a presence beside him and turned. The disciple stood there, wrapped in a plain cloak, his face calm in the early light."You rise early," the disciple said."Old habit," Lin Hao said. "In the mountains where I was raised, we woke before dawn to tend the fields. It feels wrong to sleep through the best part of the day."The disciple nodded slowly. "I remember you saying that once. Centuries ago. I thought it was just another lesson."Lin Hao looked at him. "It was not a lesson. It was a way of seeing. The world is fresh each morning. We do not have to carry yesterday’s weight into it."They stood in silence for a while. The wind moved softly through the grass. Somewhere below, a stream ran clear over stones."I have been thinking," the disciple said.
CHAPTER 38
The light in the chamber softened to a warm, steady glow. No shadows lingered. No voices whispered. The air felt lighter, as if a great weight had been lifted from the stone walls.Lin Hao walked to the pedestal and rested his hand where Xiao Man’s had been. The surface hummed gently beneath his palm."The tablet says the power is meant for all," he said. "But how do we share it? It is not something we can divide like bread."Hale ran a finger along the ancient script. "It says the network does not answer to one person. It answers to balance. To the bond between people. When we stand divided, it pulls apart. When we stand together, it holds strong."The disciple stepped closer. "That is what I failed to see. I thought the power was a prize to be won. Something to claim and keep for myself. It was never meant to be held alone."He looked at Lin Hao. "When I struck you down, I was not taking power. I was breaking the very thing that kept it safe."Lin Hao nodded slowly. "We both learned
CHAPTER 37
The figure stepped fully into the light. He was tall, cloaked in shadows that seemed to cling to him like fabric. His face was half hidden, but his eyes burned with a cold, steady violet flame."You have come far," he said. His voice did not echo. It seemed to rise from the stone itself. "And you have learned so little."Lin Hao stepped forward, placing himself between the figure and the others. "Who are you?"The figure laughed softly. "I am the one who saw the truth long ago. I am the one who understood that the power was never meant to be locked away. It was meant to be used.""You speak of the hunger," the disciple said. "The thing that consumes everything it touches. You call that power?""I call it freedom," the figure said. "Freedom from limits. Freedom from fear. Freedom from the chains that bind us all to small lives and weaker rules."He took a slow step closer. "You were once the greatest among us," he said to Lin Hao. "You held more power than any other. And you gave it up
CHAPTER 36
They left the hut an hour before dawn. The sky was still dark, the air sharp and cold. Lin Hao led the way, moving fast and sure along the ridge. The disciple walked beside him, Hale behind, his mother and Xiao Man keeping pace at the rear.No one spoke. The climb down was steep, the ground uneven beneath their feet. When they reached the valley floor, they turned toward the city, following old tracks that wound through woods and pastures. The disciple walked with his head slightly bowed, his gaze fixed ahead."The tunnel entrance is beneath an old library," he said quietly. "It was built over long ago. Most people have forgotten there is anything below.""How far down?" Hale asked."Deep," the disciple said. "And the deeper we go, the heavier the air becomes. What waits there feeds on uncertainty. Hold fast to what you know is true."They reached the edge of the city as the sun rose. The streets were quiet, only a few early commuters moving about. They kept to the narrowest lanes, av
CHAPTER 35
They walked down the mountain without speaking at first. The path wound through trees that grew thick and quiet, the light fading fast between the branches. Lin Hao kept his pace steady, watching every shadow, every turn in the track. The disciple walked beside him, his steps light but heavy with thought. He still held the serpent figurine in his hand, his fingers curled loosely around it."Your family," he said after a while. "They know nothing of this world, do they?""They know fear," Lin Hao said. "They know danger. But they do not know the full truth. Not yet.""And you will tell them?""When the time is right," Lin Hao said. "When it will not only frighten them. But help them understand why we fight."They reached the shepherd’s hut an hour later. Hale stood outside watching the approach, his posture tense. He relaxed only slightly when he saw who walked beside Lin Hao.The door opened before they reached it. Xiao Man stood in the doorway, her eyes wide. She looked from Lin Hao
