The roots curled inward, weaving into bars of green fire. The air grew hot, heavy, choking with the smell of ash and blood.

Kai stood in the center, sword dim in his hand, Amara trembling beside him. His chest rose and fell in ragged bursts. Every muscle screamed, every breath burned.

The smaller heart throbbed just ahead, veins pulsing like drums. Its glow was different from the first, brighter, sharper, alive with hunger.

The Gardener’s laughter filled the air. “See how it grows? See how it learns? Your strike made me stronger. You are the weapon of your own undoing.”

Kai glared at the pulsing mass, jaw tight. “Not stronger. Just uglier.”

The roots rattled in anger, scraping stone. Amara leaned on him, her voice soft but steady. “It’s adapting, Kai. Every time you hit it, it changes. If we fight it the same way, we lose.”

Kai’s eyes burned. “Then we change too.”

Around them, the last survivors struggled to hold their ground. Their uniforms were shredded, their helmets cracked, their

Kai fell through darkness. The void swallowed everything, sound, light, thought. He clutched Amara’s hand with all his strength, his knuckles white. Her body flickered with both gold and green light, her face pale, her breath faint. “Hold on!” he shouted. There was no answer. The fall felt endless, like sinking into an ocean with no bottom. The deeper he fell, the more he felt the Gardener’s voice crawling inside his skull. “You cannot save her. You cannot save anyone. You are mine.”Kai gritted his teeth. His sword burned in his free hand, golden fire tearing into the void. “You’re wrong. I’ll never give her to you.”At last, the darkness cracked, and then, impact. He and Amara slammed into hard ground.Kai groaned, pushing himself up. The world around him was… wrong. The sky above was split in two. One half blazed gold, bright and warm like a sunrise. The other half was a storm of green fire, roots twisting through the clouds. The ground mirrored the sky. On one side, grass grew lu

  • Chapter 71. Fractured Mind

Kai opened his eyes. The white light faded, replaced by a strange silence. He stood on cracked stone beneath a sky of shifting colors, gold and green swirling like storm clouds. The ground stretched endlessly. Shards of glass floated in the air, each one showing glimpses of memories.Amara as a child, laughing with her parents; Amara training with her blade; Amara standing in the vault, eyes glowing green. Kai’s chest tightened. He whispered, “This is… her mind.”His sword lay at his side, still glowing faint gold. He picked it up, gripping it tight. A voice echoed through the air. “Kai…”He turned. Amara stood ahead. But her body flickered, one moment her true self, smiling warmly, the next, her eyes green, her face twisted with vines. She whispered again, “Help me.”Then she vanished into the mist. Kai ran after her. As he ran, the ground shifted beneath him, paths splitting in every direction. Each path led toward a glowing shard floating in the distance. The shards pulsed gold an

  • Chapter 70. The Garden of Shadows

Kai opened his eyes to silence. No roots, no fire, no soldier. Just silence. He lay on soft grass, cool and damp against his skin. The air smelled sweet, almost too sweet, like flowers left to rot. The sky above was pale gray, with no sun, no clouds, just emptiness.Slowly, he pushed himself up. His sword lay beside him, glowing faint gold. The shard was gone. “Where am I?” he whispered.A voice answered, smooth and familiar. “You are where you belong.”Kai spun, sword raised. Behind him stood a garden. But it wasn’t like any garden he had seen. Trees rose tall but twisted, their trunks black, their leaves green fire. Flowers bloomed in impossible colors, petals dripping blood. The ground was covered in vines that moved as if they breathed, and in the center stood a man.Tall, cloaked in roots, his face pale, his eyes glowing green. The Gardener. Kai’s grip tightened on his sword. “This isn’t real.”The Gardener smiled. “What is real, boy? The world above, choking on war? Or this p

  • Chapter 69. The Heart Below

The world split open beneath their feet. Kai felt the ground vanish, his body plummeting into a pit of green light. Roots whipped past him like snakes, hissing as they struck the air. His sword glowed gold in the darkness, the only light fighting the storm of green.Beside him, the soldier shouted, clutching the shard of the second key tight against his chest. The glow burned his gloves, smoke rising from his skin. Still, he didn’t let go.The fall seemed endless. The wind roared in their ears. The smell of soil and ash grew thicker, choking Kai’s throat, then, impact. They slammed into wet ground, the force rattling Kai’s bones. He rolled, coughing, vision blurred. Roots shifted beneath him, alive, pulsing like veins. The soldier landed hard, groaning, but still held the shard. “Damn it,” he muttered. “I’m too old for this.”Kai staggered to his feet, sword raised, chest heaving. Above them, the hole sealed shut. The faint glow of the surface vanished, leaving only the pulsing gree

  • Chapter 68. The Tower of Roots

The black tower loomed like a nightmare made real. Its roots were endless, twisting into the sky, veins glowing green, pulsing in rhythm with a heartbeat that was not human. Even from the base of the hill where Kai and the soldier stood, the tower seemed alive, breathing in the windless air.The closer they walked, the heavier the ground felt. Every step made the soil sink, as if they were treading on flesh instead of dirt. The smell was thick, a mix of rot, smoke, and wet earth. Kai’s sword pulsed faintly, its golden fire alive with every beat of the tower. It felt like the blade was answering the roots, resisting their pull. He gripped the hilt tighter. The soldier spat on the ground. “This place stinks of death. You sure you’re ready for what’s waiting in there?”Kai’s voice was low but steady. “I don’t care what’s waiting. She’s in there. And so is the key.”The soldier lit a cigarette, the flame small against the green glow. “Then let’s get it done before the ground swallows u

  • Chapter 67. The Road of Ashes

The black tower loomed far away, stabbing into the horizon like a spear. Even from the ruined village, its glow could be seen, green light pulsing through the sky. Every beat of that glow felt like a heartbeat, deep and steady, echoing in Kai’s chest. He stood at the edge of the broken square, sword strapped to his back. The villagers gathered behind him, whispering. Some prayed. Others cursed. All of them feared. The scarred woman stepped forward, blocking his path. Her voice was steady but hard. “You bring danger with you. Every step you take calls the roots closer. If you leave, perhaps the rest of us can survive.”Kai’s eyes burned, but his voice was calm. “If I stay, the roots will come anyway. He won’t stop. Not until he takes everything.”The woman shook her head. “And what if you fail? What if the girl returns as his bride, as his weapon? You cannot ask us to carry that weight.”Kai’s hand tightened into a fist. “I’m not asking. I’m telling you, Amara is not gone. She’s fight
