Greenwich Superior Court. 8 AM.

Greenwich Superior Court looks like a wedding venue. Marble floors, columns, a chandelier that probably costs more than my apartment building. The kind of place built to make you feel small if you didn't grow up going to places like this. I grew up going to Home Depot with Dad at 6 AM on Saturdays.

Vivian's side: Sullivan & Cromwell, three lawyers, two paralegals, a rolling cart of binders that said HAWTHORNE - $1.05T CLAIM, and Vivian in a navy dress that was trying very hard to look like a grieving widow and not a plaintiff suing her stepson for a trillion dollars.

Chase in a suit that finally fit, because he bought a new one for trial. Sloane wasn't there. She texted me at 6 AM: I told mom I have COVID. I can't sit there and watch. I'm sorry. Good luck, Jack.

My side: Brown, Mrs. Albright, Mike Russo in his only blazer that had sawdust on the lapel, Luis, Jamal and Tommy Jr. in the back row in clean black t-shirts that said HAWTHORNE & SONS 1988, and me in the same $20 black t-shirt and black jeans and work boots because Brown said "Do not buy a suit, let the jury see who you are."

Judge: Honorable Patricia McAllister. 62, silver hair cut sharp, known in Greenwich for being fair but known at Greenwich Country Club for being Vivian's doubles partner. Brown filed a motion to recuse her. She denied it. "I can be impartial, Mr. Brown, I've known the Hawthorne family for 20 years." Which is exactly why you shouldn't be the judge, but okay.

Whitmore stood up first. Smooth as interior paint.

"Your Honor, this is a simple case of a vulnerable man. Thomas Hawthorne, a great builder, in his final years was sick, on painkillers, isolated by his son Jack who lived in Queens and visited only to ask for money..."

I almost laughed. I never asked Dad for money.

"...and manipulated into signing over his most valuable asset, a company called Hawthorne Holdings LLC, which holds 4,000 acres of desert that the Defendant now claims is worth $2.1 trillion based on a forged geological survey. My client, Vivian, his wife of 20 years, only asks for what is fair; her elective share."

He sat down. He used the words "forged" and "Queens" in the same sentence three times, and it was subtle.

Brown stood up.

"Your Honor, my client Jack Hawthorne was born in Greenwich Hospital in 1998. His father Thomas bought 4,000 acres of Nevada desert in 1988 for $8,000. That's $2 an acre. For 35 years, Thomas paid taxes on it, $1,200 a year, while his second wife Vivian called it 'that worthless junk.' We have three witnesses who heard her say it. For 35 years, Thomas told his son Jack, 'One day this dirt will be worth something, but only if you build something on it.'"

Brown walked over to me and put his hand on my shoulder.

"Jack Hawthorne does CAD for pantries. He lives in a $1,800 rent-controlled apartment in Ridgewood. He drives a 1988 Ford built by his father. He did not forge a geological survey. The Bureau of Mines did that survey. And that dirt is worth $2.1 trillion because my client's father had vision, not because my client's stepmother now has greed."

He sat down.

First witness: Vivian.

Whitmore: Mrs. Hawthorne, did Thomas ever tell you about Nevada?

Vivian, dabbing eyes: No. He hid it. Like he hid so many things at the end.

Brown on cross: Mrs. Hawthorne, you just testified you didn't know about Nevada. Yet we have your text from 2019 to your friend Linda: "Thomas wastes $1,200 a year on that stupid desert land in Nevada, it's worthless." How did you know about it in 2019 if he hid it?

Vivian froze. Pearls froze.

Vivian: I... I must have overheard...

Brown: So you knew for at least 5 years it was worthless. When did it become worth $1.05 trillion to you? The day after the party?

Objection Sustained. But jury heard it. Jury of 6 people, 4 from Greenwich, 2 from Stamford. They all heard it.

Second witness: Chase.

Brown: Mr. Hawthorne, did you build a pool house that was condemned?

Chase: It settled.

Brown: Mr. Hawthorne, do you know what 24-inch on center means?

Chase: ...It's a building term.

Brown: It's how far apart studs are. Code is 16 inches for a roof that holds a green roof. You did 24 to save $800 in lumber. Correct?

Chase: I was told it was okay.

Brown: Who told you?

Chase: My contractor.

Brown: Your contractor Ryan, who you told "Don't be a pussy" when he said it wouldn't hold? We have the text.

Whitmore: Objection!

Judge McAllister: Overruled. Answer.

Chase, red: I was under pressure! My mom wanted it for the party!

Brown: So you built a dangerous building because your mom wanted a party. And now you want $1.05 trillion of your brother's dirt because your mom wants a yacht?

Gasps. Even the court reporter gasped and then typed.

Third witness: My witness. Mike Russo.

Brown: Mr. Russo, how long did you work for Thomas Hawthorne?

Mike: 22 years. Since Jack was 4.

Brown: What did Thomas say about the Nevada land?

Mike: He said it was for Jack. Every year at Christmas party, after a few beers, he'd say, "Mike, that dirt is for Jack Boy. Vivian thinks it is worthless." We all knew. Whole crew knew.

Brown: Did Thomas seem of unsound mind?

Mike: Soundest mind I ever knew. He could calculate a roof pitch in his head while drunk. He stopped painkillers in 2023. Said they made him stupid. He wanted to be clear.

Whitmore on cross: Mr. Russo, you work for Jack now, correct? You're biased.

Mike: I work for Hawthorne & Sons. I worked for the father, now I work for the son who knows how to build. That's not bias, that's loyalty. You wouldn't know about it, you bill by the hour.

Jury laughed. Judge McAllister banged gavel but smiled a little.

Last witness: Me.

Whitmore stood up, gold hammer cufflinks flashing.

Whitmore: Mr. Hawthorne, you are 26, you live in Queens, you have $3,200 in your bank account, correct?

Me: Yes.

Whitmore: And you claim to own $2.1 trillion?

Me: No. I claim my dad's trust owns $2.1 trillion. I own a rusty box and a truck.

Whitmore: Did you forge the geological survey?

Me: No. The Nevada Bureau of Mines did. You can call them. They're in Reno. They don't know me.

Whitmore: Why did your father leave you a rusty box instead of a deed if he loved you so much?

Me: Because he knew if he left me a deed, Vivian would steal the deed. If he left me a box, Vivian would throw the box away. She did. She left it on the kitchen floor at his funeral and said "take your trash." So I took it. And inside was the deed.

Silence.

I looked at Vivian. She was looking down.

Me: My dad taught me that a house is only as strong as what's hidden in the walls. Studs, not paint. Vivian taught me the opposite; that a house is paint and I*******m. The pool house she wanted is paint. It fell down. The stage we built in Brooklyn is studs. It glows. You can stand on it. You can build a future on it.

Brown squeezed my shoulder.

Judge McAllister said, "We will break for deliberation. Jury will return tomorrow."

I walked out of that marble wedding venue courthouse in my work boots, past Vivian's lawyers with their rolling cart of $1.05 trillion claim binders, past Chase who wouldn't look at me, past Mike who put his hand on my head like I was 4 again.

Outside, it was raining in Greenwich. That sideways rain. And across the street, yellow tagged, sagging, full of water, was the pool house.

Still standing, but condemned. Almost slanting.

By now, trial over, and verdict tomorrow. And I still had $3,200 in my bank account.

  • New Money, No Need

Tuesday 7:30 AM, we were already on our way to Greenwich to visit Vivian and Chase and ask what really made them to forget us. The Big house lights were on. Two new F-150s $72k each in the driveway. White sheet still over the pool house hole. Catering trash bag still by the garage, Hendrick's.I had told Brown "Brown, don't file yet, maybe they were just excited, maybe they forgot to invite, maybe nice works." Brown said "Jack, page 4 clause, thirty-day clawback, I wrote it for this exact party." I said "Don't file yet."So no revocation yet. No Sheriff, no email. Just house and company given away on Monday, housewarming

Below me, twelve houses with lights on, gray bricks in basements humming from dirt. White oak stages inside, kids reading, air purifiers humming. Mike's crew was cleaning up, Luis coiling extension cords, Jamal sweeping white oak dust into a pile to save because white oak is $12k a load and we don't waste $12k.Sloane texted: "Don't look at Instagram."When Sloane says don't look at Instagram, you have to look at Instagram.Vivian Hawthorne is live. The double-wide in Elko has no AC at 8 AM. It died at 2 AM. Inside it's 104 degrees and the box fan just moves hot air around. At 1:21 AM I owned 100% of Dad's $8,000 dirt again, plus the big house on Round Hill Road where I ate in the kitchen for 15 years, plus Hawthorne Custom Homes LLC that built a pool house with interior sheetrock outside and got 2M views when it fell down, plus two trucks that failed inspection. At 1:22 AM I knew I didn't want any of it except the dirt and the press. At 8 AM I put two real deeds on the folding table in the dead-AC trailer. Sloane sent it to DOE, Margaret sent it to Tesla and Ford.At 8 PM that night, after House 11 lights on, Margaret gets a call on speaker in trailer office, we all hear, Vivian, Chase, Mike, Luis, Jamal, Tommy Jr., me: Tesla: "Margaret, we saw on-site press video, DOE forwarded, you pressed in Elko and powered house same day, closed loop, no Reno trucking.
