The Janitor's Payback

Chapter 4

After hailing a taxi from the hotel, he quickly returned to his rental home in hopes of getting the black card his mother had sent to his address if she was truly telling the truth.

Upon returning to the apartment, Leo found no belongings thrown out in the corridor, which relieved him; perhaps Mr Briggs wasn't that bad after all.

But he was mistaken. Just as he approached the door, a middle aged figure emerged from his rental home.

The caretaker " recognizing the man, Leo realized it was the caretaker who also happens to be his landlord's brother who had rented the place to him.

As Leo faced the landlord's brother, the man also looked at him and said with a mocking glance, " you're lucky this time, your girlfriend is dating some rich guy, and he paid your rent, so your stuff's still inside,"

" Your girlfriend's new boyfriend who paid the rent, oh no sorry, I mean your ex-girlfriend's boyfriend, but it's not a problem, as long as the bill is settled." The caretaker didn't bother to explain to the poor kid standing before him, so after shoving the poor boy aside, he walked away, but Leo stopped him.

" I'll pay my own rent. You should return his money back to him." Leo frowned and said coldly.

" You really have no shame, and definitely no gratitude that someone pitied and paid your rent." The caretaker was displeased because Leo had been behind for 3 weeks. And now,not so easily, someone else had taken care of it. Why would he even think of returning it.?

As Leo and the caretaker were talking loudly, two people came out from a room. One was Clara his ex-girlfriend, clinging onto the arm of her new boyfriend named Devon Lee, he was dressed expensively but he was obviously a playboy. Leo was sure of it!

Their visit was probably to collect Clara's things, and they happened to meet the landlord's brother, who was also the main debt collector.

" Leo, stop pretending to be something you're not, be thankful someone paid the rent for you, let's be realistic here; I doubt you even have a job right now because you can't even afford your rent with the salary," Clara looked down on Leo with disdain, barely giving him a second glance.

A penniless man who can't even pay his own rent, why waste time on such a hopeless failure? And we were able to pull some strings and received your certificate on your behalf it's inside perhaps you can get a better paying job"

" Haha" Leo had completely forgotten that today was his graduation, he sneered and quickly pulled out $4000 out of his pocket, tossing it into the caretaker's hands casually. " Consider this $4000 as payment for your rent. I've said that I don't need anyone else to pay my debts."

For Leo now, the $4000 was no more than a drop in the ocean.

The caretaker was startled as she held back the stack of bills. Clara's mouth hung open a bit, her expression incredulous. Since when had this man been so generous as to cough up $4000 for months back rent?

" Caretaker, do I need to teach you your job again?" Leo reminded him casually.

After receiving the $4000, the caretaker carefully counted and examined the bills, verifying their authenticity before smiling.

" Fine, fine, I know what to do."

Who would argue with money? The caretaker quickly returned the $1500 she received from Devon Lee.

" Sorry man, I'll have to return the $1500!"

Devon saw his money being handed back, which was a slap to his face, especially in front of his new girlfriend, making him slightly annoyed.

" This kid wants to look wealthier than I am, haha, quite an ego," Devon didn't bother responding to Leo or care about the rent money.

To outdo Leo and impress Clara, Devon said to her at his side," darling, how about I buy a house in Marc estate tomorrow? Not like someone who can only rent and never succeed."

" Really? Dev, you are so good to me. Clara perked up, her disdain for Leo growing as she compared him to Devon, who seemed utterly useless.

Do you know the price of a house in Marc estate? At least 2.5 million, you wouldn't be able to afford it even if you worked hard all your life, and now you dare to posture in front of me,haha." Devon mocked Leo with a look full of scorn.

" Leo, that $4500 must be borrowed, you don't even have a good job, I can't imagine what kind of life I'd have if I stayed with you. Luckily, I broke up with you, otherwise I'd surely be poor," Clara joined in the mocking.

Leo frowned but remained indifferent to their taunts. He remembered that the Marc estate was in fact owned by the Adams Group, so wouldn't that be his father's assets ? If everything his mother said was true!

Considering this, Leo smiled at the corner of his mouth. " Clara, I hope you won't regret your choice today."

" Haha, me, regret? You think so highly of yourself; leaving you is the smartest choice I've ever made in my entire life." Clara said ruthlessly, and with that, she clung to Devon's arm, dragged her suitcase, and quickly left the hallway without looking back.

Leo shook his head, no longer concerned about Clara, as he looked forward to meeting the man who had called earlier.
