Even though Jet Zangi had been a mercenary overseas for several years and seen his share of bloodshed, he could not stop the shiver that ran down his spine under Kaelus’s gaze. The difference between them was like that of a mangy cur trembling before a lion.

Kaelus did not even need to lift a hand; his aura alone made Jet feel as though every scar from every battlefield he’d fought on had been reopened at once. He wanted to meet that gaze, to stand tall, but his knees nearly buckled. In the end, Jet lowered his head and slipped away with his men, pretending calm but burning inside with humiliation.

Outside the airport, under the buzzing glow of streetlamps, he pulled out his phone with a grimace. His sources had already tracked Jaden Rift and Morix Sable to Sunsetlake Village, a small, quiet place on the outskirts of Shadowmoor. They were there visiting the family of one Asher Storm.

Jet’s lips curled into a twisted grin as his men gathered around. “Sunsetlake Village, huh? Tonight’s

Selena Verrick’s hands trembled as she clutched the phone. Her grandfather’s voice still rang in her ears like a curse.“Grandpa, please listen to me,” she said quickly, almost tripping over her own words. “This has nothing to do with us. We would never lay a hand on Uncle, no matter what happened at dinner. You have to believe me—”The line went dead. Xander had hung up before she could finish.Selena froze, staring at the silent receiver. A chill crawled across her skin. She turned slowly toward Jaden, who had been watching her with narrowed eyes from the couch.“What happened?” he asked. His voice was calm, but there was an edge to it, a readiness for bad news.Selena set the phone down with shaky fingers. “Uncle Elias has been kidnapped,” she whispered. “Grandpa thinks it’s us. He said if Uncle isn’t returned by tomorrow morning, he’ll bring the entire family here. He’ll kneel at our doorstep and accuse us in front of everyone in Ironvale City. He wants to destroy us in the eyes o

Elias jumped into his car with three burly bodyguards and a single-minded look. He had a mission: corner Vane, force an apology, humiliate them in public, then return to the mansion like a man who had done his duty. He underestimated two things. The night, and someone who moves in the shadows. As Elias’s convoy turned onto Novel Street, the headlights splashed across wet asphalt. Then, as if the world had folded, a matte black van slid across the road in front of them with no plates at all. It stopped so close that the grille almost kissed their bumper. The driver braked hard. Tires screamed. The air smelled of burnt rubber and fear. Before Elias could shout an order, the van’s side door ripped open. Half a dozen men in plain clothes poured out carrying Kalashnikovs and handguns. They moved fast and practiced. They smashed the car windows with the butts of their weapons. Glass exploded into the cab in a glittering rain.“Don’t move,” one of them barked, voice cold and steady. “One ste

Wilder Verrick came back to consciousness slowly in a pale hospital room. The fluorescent lights hummed. Machines kept a steady, indifferent rhythm. For a moment he blinked at the ceiling, confused, then the memory of that phone call hit him like a fist to the gut. His face crumpled.Elias and Aiden burst into the room the second the nurse called them. They rushed to the bedside, voices high with relief. “Uncle, you’re awake!” Elias said, hovering too close, too eager.Wilder’s eyes fixed on them, the color draining from his face. He tried to speak and the words came out as a dry whisper. “Michaelson Trump. He called back. He really is Michaelson Trump.”Elias forced a nervous laugh and stepped forward to steady him. “Uncle, calm down. It’s fine. Jaden Rift must have memorized the number during some public event. Mr. Trump doesn’t know him. It was a coincidence, that’s all.”Wilder did not relax. The old fear and the old pride settled on him like armor that would not come off. He had

Elias Verrick and his family moved in a frenzy, half-carrying, half-dragging Wilder out of the private hall. The man’s face was ashen, his body limp, and their voices echoed in panic as they rushed him toward the hospital. The once-proud lion of the table had been reduced to a fallen figure, and the sight left everyone else shaken.Back in the silence of the Peony Hall, Selena grabbed Jaden by the arm, pulling him aside. Her eyes were wide, her voice sharp but hushed so the others wouldn’t hear.“Jaden… tell me the truth. What did you do? Was that really—”Jaden only smiled faintly, calm as though none of the chaos had touched him.“That phone number is real.”Selena’s breath caught. Her lips parted, but no words came. The name itself carried too much weight. Michaelson Trump—the man everyone in the nation knew, the one they only ever saw from a distance on the news or in official broadcasts. To speak with him directly was something most people couldn’t even dream of.“Oh my goodness…

The call connected after only a few rings. A crisp, steady voice came through the speaker.“Hello?”Wilder Verrick smirked, tilting his chin high as he turned on the speaker mode so everyone could hear. “Who the heck are you?” he asked mockingly, his voice dripping with sarcasm. There was a brief pause on the line, followed by a firm reply.“I’m Michaelson Trump. Who are you, and why do you have my personal number?”The room froze. Even through the phone’s tinny speaker, the weight of authority in the man’s tone was undeniable. But Wilder scoffed, shaking his head. “Wow, impressive. You even sound exactly like our Chief. I’ll give you that—you’ve got a real talent for imitation.” He looked around the table with a grin, as if he’d already unmasked the con. “Do you take me for an idiot? Do you know how many frauds out there try to impersonate big names?”On the other end, Michaelson’s voice hardened. “Which department of the Grand Council are you with?”Wilder waved his hand dismissivel

Elias Verrick and his crew leaned forward in excitement, grins spreading across their faces as though they were about to watch a play where the ending was already written.Across the table, Selena and her family began to pale. Panic rippled through them like a cold wave. They knew very well how dangerous Wilder could be.No one at the table knew exactly what title Wilder held at the Grand Council. But the very name of that place was enough to make ordinary people tremble. The Grand Council wasn’t a place for common men—it was a realm of untouchable elites. If Wilder truly made a call, what would stop him from having the mayor of Ironvale City bend to his will? And if the mayor turned his back on Selena’s company, then the project she fought so hard for would crumble overnight. That would mean ruin—not just for her, but for every member of her family.Selena’s chest tightened with fear. Her hands shook as she reached for Jaden’s arm, her voice rising in desperation.“Jaden, please,” sh
