Debanch’s body hit the floor with a dull scrape. He pressed his forehead almost to the marble, his breath coming in short, terrified gasps. “N-no, n-not at all,” he stammered, voice shaking. “If you want to kill me, I will end my life myself. I have no opinion. Do with me what you will.”

Lazarus and Trust stared as if the ground had yawned open beneath them. One moment Debanch had swaggered in like a warlord; the next he was a trembling wreck. Their mouths hung open. Neither could explain how the same man could flip from menace to beggar the instant he saw Jaden.

Morganna gripped the edge of her seat. Her heartbeat thudded in her ears. She felt a hot thrill rush through her. Jaden was not a rumor or a lucky street fighter. He was something else entirely. “This is so cool,” she thought. “He is really amazing.”
