Chapter 7 - Gelato

Jordan smiled when he heard his father's words. A few minutes ago, he had been greatly displeased with the attention his father had showered on Darian. His irritation had gotten worse when the chef and the servers had come into the dining hall and given Darian the biggest and most beautiful bowl, which was full of gelato. That was meant to be his. Jordan had been told so much by Ally, his mother, that he easily looked down on Darian. Darian was only a few months older than him, but that did not count. The moment his father had asked him to come collect Darian's big bowl, he spat, "Finally." He hopped down from his chair and hurried to his father's side. Darian sighed. He wanted that big bowl. He wondered why his father was doing this, after being nice to him.

Lucas could guess what Darian was thinking. "Son, I just want you to get along with your brothers, that is all. You should trust your dad."

Darian nodded without uttering a word. As long as he ate any gelato, he would cope. This was the first time his dad was nice to him. He would go along with it.

Ally rose to her feet. "Jordan, get back here now! You should not take what belongs to others. Have I not told you that?"

Jordan turned to his mother. "But Mother, you told me that Darian is a concubine's son. You said he deserved to have nothing. You said I would have it all because I am the first son of the legitimate wife. So, why can't I have his bowl of gelato?"

Ally balled her fists. Lucas relaxed fully in his chair. "I see how you teach my children. He speaks exactly like you." Lucas turned to Jordan. "Come here, my boy. Your mother is wrong. Brothers should stay together. They should be united. Besides, Darian is a few months older than you. If you want me to be happy with you, you should treat him well."

"Fine, now give me the gelato," Jordan said.

Lucas placed the bowl in Jordan's hand, then he turned to Ally and smiled, almost as if he could tell. Jordan could not wait to get to his seat before he ate the gelato. He could imagine his father changing his mind and giving the bowl back to Darian. Jordan dipped the spoon into the gelato and raised it to his lips.

Like a thunderbolt, Ally rushed to Jordan and hit his hand so hard that the bowl fell off. The bowl hit the floor and shattered into pieces. The cool gelato splashed like a puddle. Jordan felt the harsh pain in his hand. His mouth widened in surprise, and tears streamed down his cheek. He placed one hand in front of his eyes and wailed loudly.

"Shut up! I told you not to touch Darian's meal, and you did!" Ally scolded.

"But Dad asked me to," Jordan replied, dropping his hand.

Ally was panting badly. She grabbed Jordan's ear and pulled it harshly. "Mother, please," Jordan begged.

"Follow me!" Ally yelled and dragged Jordan along with her. They exited the dining hall. Ally dragged her crying Jordan straight to his room. This was not what Ally had planned. She had planned that Darian would eat the bowl of dessert and die. But somehow, Lucas had suspected it and foiled it. She would try again. She would try another day.

Two days later, Darian was in his room reading on his bed when he heard a knock. "Come in," he said.

The head chef, John, stepped in and bowed. "I came to give you some cookies and milk. Your father, Lord Lucas Featherington, asked me to give this to you."

"Place it on the table," Darian said as he put down his book.

The chef stepped out and shut the door behind him. Darian came down from his bed and walked toward the table. The cookies were hot and fresh. They were carved like flowers. He carried one and broke it in two. Then he lifted one to his mouth and chewed. It tasted delicious.

By dinner time, Ally stepped into the large dining hall brimming with energy. There was a pleasant smile on her face, and her two sons noticed. Lucas noticed, too, even as he kept watching the door. He was waiting for Darian to walk in through that door. He had never been late during mealtime, so Lucas wondered what was going on.

"Shall we eat?" Ally asked.

"Let us wait for Darian. I am sure he will be here soon," Lucas said.

Ally sighed. "I am so hungry. When did that little boy become so important that we cannot eat without him? I can't wait. I will eat now! My children are hungry, too. They should not starve because of the son of a concubine."

Lucas rose to his feet and walked straight to the door without saying a word to Ally. She could go crazy for all he cared. All he wanted to do was to see his son. His face was stiff, no emotion showed, but his heart felt a tinge of worry. Darian was absent, and Ally was so happy. What could be a better sign that there was something going on? Lucas had always walked fast, but now, his strides were quicker. He got to Darian's door and opened it.

The gentle moonlight shone from the window, casting light on Darian's face and blonde hair. There was a candle in the corner of the room. It cast its light gently. Lucas stood by the door and watched his son. His face looked so gentle, yet, so pale. Lucas walked in slowly. The boy was asleep, or was he not? Lucas placed his hand on Darian's skin. It was so cold... too cold.

"No," Lucas muttered without raising his voice. His brain registered the fact: A normal human should not be this cold. He raised Darian and shook him. "Darian, my boy. Wake up."

Helena’s walk was slow, and she kept thinking of what Holga had come to do. Had Holga come to make sure that she got what she wanted from Darian in the guise of a reward? Maybe Holga felt that Helena was too slow and had come to speed it up. Or maybe Holga had come to cause trouble. Whichever it was, Helena would find out when she reached the place.Darian had been waiting a while for Helena, and he was wondering if she was taking this long because she was with Noel. Noel had told him that he would try not to meet privately with Helena until Darian could talk to her, but it seemed he had gone back on his promise; he simply could not resist seeing her.Darian considered the woman before him. She had lines of straight white hair coloring her black hair, making it resemble the plumage of penguins huddled together. Holga was wearing a red dress. The top was full of beads, and she gave a smile each time Darian raised his eyes to briefly look at her. Darian had invited Jerry to be present a

Noel sighed and put his face in his hands.“You are not crying from emotion, are you?” Charles teased as he elbowed Noel.Noel lowered his hands and frowned. “I want to just beat you up.”Charles laughed. Heali and Jerry chuckled a little. In Darian’s heart, he knew that Noel was simply hungry. This was Noel’s "hungry and frustrated" mode on display. The others did not understand it, but Darian did; after all, they had been friends for years.“Any questions or contributions before we have lunch? I am starving,” Darian said. With the replies he received, Darian knew he was speaking for everyone in the room.***It was evening, and Helena was still in her yellow dress. In front of her sat a large clay pot containing a brown broth that almost resembled the color of mud. She sprinkled a black powder from a plate on the table into the giant pot. The medicine immediately deepened into a darker hue. She picked up a wooden ladle and began to stir. She was deep in thought. Today was the day sh

  • Chapter 122 – The Map of Ancestors

Darian leaned back in his chair as his mind considered the options. Whether magic was required or whether there was some sham going on with that mask, he had to decide.“Jerry, why don’t you go check if the mask is made of magnets or any other material? Meanwhile, you can take a group of intelligent craftsmen with you to investigate what is going on,” Darian said.Jerry nodded his head and bowed slightly as he extended both hands and folded them. “Yes.”“In the meantime, I have something to show us all.” Darian spread his hands on the table, and a scroll appeared. Picking it up, he said, “You all remember when I left for the mountains for a while, and when the Rebel Master took over? I obtained this—it is a map, and it happens to mark all the resources my ancestors stored up before the Eagle Clan was destroyed.”Noel rose to his feet and spread the map across the table. It was a large map, covering nearly half of the massive surface. The men rose to their feet, as did Darian. Their ey

“Why do you not see a future with him? You know how capable, kind, and good Noel is. He is such a great guy. And it is not like he wants you married to him immediately; he wants it at a later date.” Darian caught himself. “I am sorry. I guess it is a personal matter. But Noel happens to be my friend. Helena, please tell me.”It was odd for Darian to be so nice to her, and she felt the difference. He was usually harsh and tough. He was doing all of this for his friend, just as she was doing everything for her own.“Noel told me you gave him a decree for us to be married in the near future,” Helena said as she bowed her head, playing with her fingers beneath the table.Darian nodded his head. “Yes. It is true. I have done that especially to aid you with your clan. I read about how stubborn the people of your clan can be, especially when it comes to marriages. Only a visible decree of the Eagle Lord makes them bend most times.”Helena’s gaze shot upward immediately. Her eyes met Darian’s

Darian found a lump in his throat.Noel continued, “I really wish you had told me this a long time ago. For a while now, I had felt there was more to me, but I could never lay my hand on it. And, when the Rebel Master mocked my position, I felt it deep within too. Yes, I have been nursing something that should have been taken care of but… as my friend, you should have told me.”“I was afraid,” Darian replied softly.“I know. Darian, anything about the Golden Eagle scares you. Others may not know. They might see you as the tough and powerful guy, but I know that even with all that power, you are a kid who gets scared sometimes,” Noel said.“So… you are not mad at me?” Darian asked.“I am not, only because I have seen you sick with fear and complaining about your heritage a lot,” Noel said with a small smile rising at one side of his mouth. “Besides, it is kind of good to know that we are relatives.”Darian smiled back. “Yeah, no wonder you are the one I am most patient with.”“Darian,

The Rebel Master sighed calmly. “So tell me, what do you have in mind today? More itching powder, or do you want to flog me to death? Wait, I forgot—you could not kill me. I am still too valuable to you. Believe me, I will not want to speak of all the benefits I could give if I am not treated well!”Charles clapped his hands three times. “Wow! I am thrilled to see your consistent pride even after you have been humiliated many times. You have no idea what we have for you today.”Jerry spoke, “Really, I think we should beat him to a pulp. I always get the urge whenever I see him.”Charles gave a dry chuckle. “You can save yourself from a beating. There is something you can do now.”The Rebel Master’s eyes narrowed. “As I said, if I am not treated well... I will never give you guys any benefits without being treated well.”Jerry dipped his hand to his back and produced a long whip that had been tied there. He walked some steps closer to the Rebel Master, who showed no sign of fear or wit
