Chapter 26: Crossing the Line

"Got it," Kenji hissed, his fingers hammering the final sequence into the diagnostic terminal as a stream of green text cascaded down the cracked screen. "Port authority logs are looping our transponder ghost-signal with a civilian coal barge three miles off our stern. We’re officially invisible."

"And the corporate bounty files?" Seraphine demanded, keeping her eyes fixed on the narrow metal ladder leading up to the main deck. "Are we still flagged as missing assets, or did your little analog trick buy us an actual clean slate?"

"We’re clean on the port registries," Kenji replied, yanking the copper tap wire free and coiling it with sharp, practiced jerks. "As far as the maritime authorities know, the Iron Gander is carrying five hundred tons of low-grade anthracite and nothing else. But the corporation isn't relying on public registries anymore."

Dorian shifted uncomfortably against the crate, his hands trembling as he pulled his jacket tighter around his neck. "What does that mean? Are they still tracking us?"

"They’re not tracking the ship," Kenji said, turning to face him with a grim set to his jaw. "They’re tracking you. Specifically, the biological signature of the experimental compound fused to your nervous system."

"It’s not just a tracker," Dorian murmured, his eyes locking onto the faint, rhythmic crimson pulse still glowing beneath the pale skin of his collarbone. He swallowed hard, his voice dropping to a strained whisper. "When the lab techs injected this thing into my spine... they didn't just install a beacon. It’s a literal dead-man’s switch."

Seraphine froze, her hand hovering over her data-pad. "Explain. Right now."

"It’s timed," Dorian said, his breath hitching as a fresh wave of tremors wracked his frame. "The crimson glow... it’s not an accident or a design flaw. It’s a countdown. If my system doesn't receive a proprietary stabilizer compound every seventy-uwo hours, the beacon triggers an autolysis protocol. It will literally liquefy my organs from the inside out."

"Seventy-two hours?" Seraphine echoed, her voice sharpening into a lethal edge as she stepped closer to him. "Dorian, tell me you’re exaggerating. How many hours do we have left on that clock right now?"

"We don't have seventy-two hours," Dorian whispered, closing his eyes as he pressed a trembling palm against his chest. "I broke out of the lab late yesterday. We’re sitting on roughly forty-eight hours before my own blood turns to acid."

Kenji cursed under his breath, kicking a stray length of cable across the rusted deck plates. "Fantastic. We didn't escape the trap at all. We just bought ourselves two days on a floating coffin before your spine decides to self-destruct."

"Then we change course," Seraphine snapped, turning on Kenji with a fierce challenge in her eyes. "We find the manufacturer, raid their supply depot, and get you the compound before your internal clock hits zero."

"Raid a corporate black-site?" Kenji barked a harsh, humorless laugh. "You’ve got a better chance of walking into a meat grinder and asking the blades to stop spinning."

"Do you have a better idea?" Dorian challenged, raising his head, the fog in his eyes finally clearing away as adrenaline surged through his veins. "Because sitting here waiting to melt from the inside isn't a strategy I plan on entertaining."

"He’s right, Kenji," Seraphine added, her tone dropping into a cold, uncompromising finality. "We survived the docks, we outmaneuvered Silas, and we slipped past port security. We aren't stopping now just because the odds are impossible."

Kenji stared between them, his jaw tight as the heavy thrum of the freighter’s massive diesel engines vibrated through the steel deck beneath their boots. Outside the thick hull, the low whistle of the open sea grew louder, signaling that the Iron Gander had finally crossed the maritime checkpoint into international waters, leaving the neon-drenched silhouette of the corporate city far behind in the choking fog.

"Fine," Kenji muttered, sliding his suppressed pistol back into its shoulder holster with a sharp click. "We raid the depot. But if we’re going to hit a high-security corporate supply cache, we need weapons, blueprints, and an insider who knows the facility layout."

"And where are we supposed to find an insider in the middle of the ocean?" Seraphine asked, crossing her arms.

"We don't have to look far," Kenji said, a cold, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth as he tapped the encrypted data-slate they had scavenged earlier. "We’ve got a corporate tracker locked in the ballast locker upstairs who looks like he’s about ready for a very long conversation."

Seraphine’s eyes narrowed in grim understanding. "Let’s go wake him up."

Dorian pushed himself up from the crate, his legs unsteady for a moment before he caught his balance, the crimson pulse beneath his collarbone flaring with a sudden, angry surge of light that matched the fierce determination in his eyes.

"Lead the way," Dorian said, stepping forward as the freighter lurched over a deep ocean swell.

Kenji turned toward the forward ladder, but before his boot could touch the bottom rung, a sharp, metallic screech echoed from the upper companionway—a sound that didn't belong to the grinding machinery of the ship, nor the steady rhythm of the crew overhead. It was the distinct scrape of a heavy boot against steel, coming from a deck that was supposed to be completely empty.

Kenji froze, his hand instantly shooting out to grab Seraphine’s shoulder, forcing her down into the shadows of the stacked crates.

"Get back," Kenji whispered, his voice a razor-thin rasp as he drew his pistol once more. "Somebody just came down the forward hatch."

Seraphine pulled Dorian down beside her, her fingers flying over the encrypted data-slate to mute its screen as absolute silence fell over the lower hold, broken only by the deafening roar of the engines and the slow, agonizing drip of saltwater from the overhead pipes.

"It's not the crew," Dorian breathed, his eyes wide as he stared up at the shadows of the ladder. "The crew stays in the galley during the shift change."

"I know," Kenji whispered, squinting into the gloom as a single, booted shadow detached itself from the upper landing and began descending st

ep by heavy step into the dark. "We’ve got company."

The crimson light glowing beneath the skin of his collarbone pulsed erratically, casting a sickly, bioluminescent hue across his contorted features. "I can feel him.
