Chapter 27: The Hunter Aboard

"They aren't looking at ship logs," Kenji murmured, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the data feed scrolling across the terminal. "They’re tracking the biometric signature of the bio-sample inside you, Dorian. The corporation flagged you as proprietary stolen tech worth more than this entire vessel."

Seraphine cursed under her breath, reaching down to steady Dorian as another wave of tremors wracked his frame. "So the port authority thinks we're a coal barge, but the company's elite hunters can still smell us coming a mile away?"

"Worse," Kenji said, snapping the diagnostic terminal shut with a sharp metallic click. "I saw the deployment logs flash across the port surveillance bypass. They didn't send a cleanup crew. They sent Vance."

Dorian raised his head, his pale face slick with cold sweat. "Vance? Who is—"

"An elite corporate tracker," Kenji cut him off, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low pitch. "The kind of man they send when they want a target erased down to the molecular level without creating a public incident. If he's already processing the clues at the auto-repair shop..."

A sharp, metallic clink rang out from the darkness above them, cutting Kenji off mid-sentence.

Seraphine froze, her hand instantly dropping to the hilt of the tactical knife strapped to her thigh. "Did you hear that?" she whispered, her eyes darting toward the ceiling of the cargo hold.

"Yeah," Kenji breathed, drawing his suppressed pistol with fluid, silent efficiency. He gestured sharply toward the dense labyrinth of stacked shipping containers and rusted machinery lining the lower deck. "Move. Now."

They scrambled into the shadows just as a heavy boot slammed down onto the top rung of the iron access ladder leading from the main deck. The rhythmic, measured descent of footsteps echoed against the steel hull—deliberate, cold, and entirely unfamiliar to the ship's crew.

Dorian stumbled, his boots catching on a loose cable, but Seraphine caught him by the arm before he could hit the deck, dragging him behind a towering stack of industrial crates.

"Quiet," Kenji mouthed, pressing his back against the rusted corrugated steel of a container, his weapon raised and tracking the dim perimeter of the hold.

The footsteps stopped at the bottom of the ladder. A low, electronic hum chimed in the damp air—the distinct sound of a corporate tactical visor scanning thermal and biometric frequencies.

"I know you're down here, Kenji," a smooth, synthetic voice called out from the darkness, carrying an effortless edge of absolute confidence. "You and your little stray pets can't outrun a localized tracking ping. You're swimming in a very small, very loud fishbowl."

Seraphine shot Kenji a sharp, questioning look, her lips forming a silent Do we fight or run?

Kenji shook his head once, his jaw tight as he gestured deeper into the ship's bowels, toward the deafening, vibrating machinery of the auxiliary engine room.

"He's alone," Kenji whispered back, his voice barely audible over the hum of the ship's generators. "If we run topside, we walk right into an ambush. But if we draw him into the engine room..."

"You want to set a trap in a metal box with a corporate killer?" Seraphine hissed, her eyes flashing with indignant fury. "We don't have the heavy gear for a close-quarters brawl, Kenji!"

"We have the dark, the noise, and element of surprise," Kenji replied, his eyes cold and unwavering. "Which is more than he expects from a burnt-out corporate runner and a couple of walking corpses."

Another heavy boot step crunched on the metal grating closer to their position, the sound amplified by the hollow acoustics of the hold.

Dorian gripped his chest, his breathing turning ragged as the crimson pulse beneath his collarbone flared brighter in response to his spiking adrenaline. "My... my chest," he gasped, his knees buckling slightly. "The vibration... it's triggering the shunt—"

"Keep your breathing steady, Dorian, or he'll hear your heartbeat before he sees us," Seraphine warned, sliding her arm around his waist to bear his weight as she pulled him further into the narrow gap between two shipping containers.

"He's already tracking the heartbeat, Seraphine," Kenji muttered, checking the magazine of his pistol. "He's just toying with us now. Move, both of you. Into the engine room, now."

Without waiting for a response, Kenji slipped silently through the narrow gap between the containers, melting into the deep shadows cast by the hanging overhead pipes.

Seraphine gritted her teeth, hoisting Dorian up as he stumbled again, his boots dragging against the rusted deck plates. "Come on, Dorian. One foot in front of the other. Don't you dare pass out on me now."

"I... I can't," Dorian breathed, his vision blurring as waves of nausea rolled through his altered nervous system. "The shunt... it's burning. It feels like my blood is turning to acid."

"Save the complaints for when we're breathing clean air," Seraphine snapped back, though her voice lacked its usual harshness, softened by the stark terror reflecting in Dorian's wide, dilated pupils.

Ahead of them, the heavy steel bulkhead door leading into the freighter's engine room loomed open, vomiting a torrent of deafening mechanical roars and thick, oily heat into the dim cargo hold.

From behind them, a sharp metallic click echoed through the space—the distinct sound of a corporate-issue pulse rifle cycling its chamber.

"Running won't change the math, Kenji," Vance's voice echoed closer this time, bouncing off the steel walls with chilling clarity. "The asset belongs to the board. You're just collateral damage."

Kenji didn't answer. He simply gestured sharply for Seraphine and Dorian to dive through the bulkhead doorway, fading backward into the deafening, industrial heart of the ship just as a high-intensity laser sight swept acro

Seraphine demanded, keeping her eyes fixed on the narrow metal ladder leading up to the main deck. "Are we still flagged as missing assets, or did your little analog trick buy us an actual clean slate?""We’re clean on the port registries," Kenji replied, yanking the copper tap wire free and coiling it with sharp, practiced jerks.
