Chapter 19: Drawing the Line
"Keep that pressure on his shoulder, Seraphine, or the synthetic shunt is going to miss the sub-arachnoid gap entirely," Kenji snapped, his knuckles white as he stabilized the heavy injector against the base of Dorian’s convulsing spine.
"I'm holding him as hard as I can!" Seraphine yelled back, her fingers locked tight over Dorian’s collarbone while the young man writhed in a silent, agonizing shiver. "Just push the damn plunger already! If you wait another second, his entire nervous system is going to fry!"
With a sharp hiss of compressed gas and a sickening mechanical click, the injector drove deep into Dorian's vertebrae.
Dorian let out a ragged, choking scream that rattled the hanging wrenches above the workbench, his body going rigid like a plank before collapsing backward in a wet heap of sweat and stained clothes.
"He's out," Seraphine breathed, pressing her palm against Dorian’s sweaty neck to check his pulse while her hands shook violently. "His heart rate is dropping. It's actually slowing down to a normal human rhythm."
"It had better," Kenji muttered, wiping sweat and synthetic fluid from his forehead with the back of his wrist as he tossed the empty metal cylinder into a rusted oil drum. "Because if Malone's black-market cocktail only bought us an hour, we are officially out of bullets, out of safehouses, and out of luck."
Dorian stirred faintly on the hydraulic table, a soft, involuntary groan slipping past his chapped lips as the violent crimson glow beneath his skin finally faded back into a dormant, dull hum.
"He's stabilizing, but he won't be running anywhere for at least twelve hours," Seraphine said, her voice dropping to a harsh, exhausted whisper as she pulled a salvaged tablet from her coat pocket. "Which means we need to figure out our next move before Augustin Voss's cleanup crew kicks this door in."
"Move where?" Kenji crossed his arms, leaning back against a greasy tool cabinet with a cynical smirk. "The outer slums are crawling with Malphas Syndicate enforcers, and every corporate checkpoint from here to the upper tiers has your lovely father's face—and yours—scrolling across their tactical displays."
"We aren't running to the outer slums," Seraphine replied, her fingers flying across the cracked glass of her tablet with surprising speed. "Running keeps us on their terms. If we stay on the defensive, Vane and my father will systematically hunt us down until we're cornered in a dead end."
"So your brilliant alternative to running is what? Surrendering?" Kenji raised an eyebrow, stepping closer to peer down at the glowing schematics reflecting in her glasses.
"We hit them," Seraphine said, her voice turning ice-cold as she looked up from the screen to meet his skeptical gaze. "We stop playing hide-and-seek and take the fight directly to the source."
"Have you lost your absolute mind?" Kenji barked a harsh, humorless laugh, throwing his hands up in disbelief. "We are three exhausted people—one of whom is currently chemically comatose on a meat table—and you want to launch an offensive against a multi-billion-dollar corporate security apparatus?"
"Not just any corporate facility," Seraphine countered, tapping the glass twice to pull up a heavily encrypted, multi-layered blueprint of a sprawling coastal installation. "Augustin Voss's secondary logistics depot down at the old municipal docks."
Kenji stopped laughing. His eyes narrowed as he leaned over the table, studying the sprawling red zones and automated defense grids mapped across the display. "The docks? That's a heavily fortified military-industrial zone. Even the city police don't patrol within three blocks of those warehouses."
"Which is exactly why my father stores his most sensitive off-books assets there," Seraphine said, pointing a slender finger directly at a reinforced subterranean vault marked in crimson. "Including the primary stabilization isotopes required to manufacture Dorian's suppressants permanently. Malone's shunt was a temporary band-aid. Without a regular supply of those specific isotopes, Dorian's body will reject the tech within a week anyway."
"So it's a suicide run either way," Kenji muttered, scratching his stubbled jaw as he stared down at the sleeping form of Dorian. "Go out fighting for the cure, or sit here and wait for a heavy-caliber round to turn this auto shop into our tomb."
"It's a calculated strike," Seraphine corrected sharply, refusing to back down under his heavy gaze. "Before the bunker fell, I managed to siphon administrative override codes from my father's mainframe. If we slip past the perimeter before their automated shifts change, we can bypass ninety percent of their static defenses."
"Admin codes don't mean a damn thing when a tactical squad opens fire with armor-piercing shotguns," Kenji reminded her, though the stubborn glint in his dark eyes made it clear he was already calculating the angles. "We'll need heavy gear. And last I checked, you traded your tactical rifle for a burner phone."
"We improvise with whatever is left in my father's local supply lockers," Seraphine said firmly, slamming the tablet shut and sliding it back into her inner pocket. "Voss expects us to cower in the shadows. He expects us to run toward the city limits like panicked rats. Hitting his logistics depot at the docks will throw his entire tracking algorithm into chaos."
"You're completely insane," Kenji said, a grim, dangerous grin slowly spreading across his face as he reached for his tactical vest and began re-threading the remaining straps. "I almost respect it."
"Save your admiration for after we secure the isotopes," Seraphine retorted, turning back toward Dorian and gently brushing a stray lock of damp hair from his forehead. "How long before the sedative wears off enough for him to walk?"
"Longer than we'd like," Kenji answered, walking over to check the heavy iron deadbolt on the side door to make sure no unwanted visitors were lingering in the alley. "Malone's cocktail hits the central nervous system hard. If we wake him up too fast, the shock might trigger another cardiac event."
"Then we don't wait for him to be at full strength," Seraphine stated, her voice brooking no argument. "We support his weight just like we did coming out of the bunker. We get him into the back of a stolen transport, drive down to the coast, and slip through the perimeter under the cover of the midnight coastal fog."
"Fog or no fog, Vane's tracking dogs will smell us coming a mile away if we aren't careful," Kenji warned, pulling a heavy tactical knife from his boot and testing the edge with his thumb. "And if Elder Vane is truly backing your father's play on the streets, he won't be playing by corporate rules. That old bastard enjoys the messy work."
"Let him enjoy it," Seraphine whispered, her eyes hardening into chips of dark ice as she pulled a compact, high-frequency decryption tool from the workbench and tucked it securely into her belt. "Because by the time he figures out our vector, we'll already be inside their vaults."
Dorian stirred again on the hydraulic table, letting out a low, ragged sigh that sounded less like a groan and more like a warning. The dull crimson glow beneath his collarbone flared once, twice, before settling back into a slow, steady pulse that matched the rhythmic dripping of a leaky pipe somewhere in the back of the shop.
"He's coming around," Kenji muttered, stepping away from the door and resting a heavy hand on the grip of his salvaged pistol. "Get your gear ready, Seraphine. We move in ten minutes, whether he's standing on his own two feet or not."
Seraphine didn't answer, merely nodding once as she double-checked the charge on her decryption tool and strapped her service harness tight across her chest. The fear that had paralyzed her back in the bunker was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, calculating fury that matched the driving rain slamming against the rusted metal roof outside.
"Dorian," Seraphine murmured, leaning down close to the young man's ear as his eyelids slowly began to flutter open, revealing pupils swimming in a hazy golden sea. "I hope
you're ready for a fight, because we're going shopping."

He's weaponizing the corridor's security feed.""Let him try," Kenji muttered, sliding his combat knife back into its sheath with a sharp click before ripping a high-pressure steam valve off the auxiliary wall unit. "Seraphine, keep Dorian behind the turbine housing. If Vance gets past me, put a round through his skull. Don't hesitate.""I never do," Seraphine said coldly, dragging the shivering boy out of the line of fire as a dense, blinding white hiss of scalding steam erupted across the narrow metal walkway. The deafening roar of the freighter's engines drowned out the initial sound of the ambush, but the sudden, violent clash of steel against steel echoed sharply through the vibrating lower deck. Turning the Blade
Chapter 29: Turning the Blade"Stay down, Dorian," Kenji snapped, not even turning around as he kept his eyes locked on the twisting maze of steam pipes stretching across the lower engineering deck. "One wrong step and that spinal shunt is going to blow its seals. We don't need you bleeding out before Vance even gets his hands on you.""I’m not... useless," Dorian wheezed, his hands clawing weakly at the rusted metal plating of the deck as another violent tremor wracked his frame. The crimson light glowing beneath the skin of his collarbone pulsed erratically, casting a sickly, bioluminescent hue across his contorted features. "I can feel him. In the static... down the corridor."Seraphine dropped to one knee beside the boy, shoving him firmly back against the bulkhead. "Shut up, Dorian. Listen to Kenji. If Vance is tracking your biometric signature, every word you choke out is basically screaming our GPS coordinates right into his earpiece.""She’s right," Kenji whispered, his body t

I found a fresh boot print on the ladder leading down from the main deck—and it definitely doesn't belong to any deckhand on this rust bucket."Seraphine's grip tightened around her weapon, her knuckles turning bone-white in the dim yellow emergency glow of the hold. "How long ago?""Minutes. Maybe less," Kenji replied, his eyes scanning the labyrinth of massive steel pipes and towering auxiliary steam turbines that hummed with a deafening, vibrating roar. "He’s moving quiet. Trying to secure the asset without tripping shipboard alarms or alerting the crew.""Which means he wants Dorian breathing," Seraphine said, casting a sharp glance toward the shivering youth slumped against a bulkhead.Dorian tried to push himself up, his teeth gritted against the sudden, agonizing flare of pain radiating from
The Hunter Aboard
Chapter 27: The Hunter Aboard"They aren't looking at ship logs," Kenji murmured, his eyes narrowing as he stared at the data feed scrolling across the terminal. "They’re tracking the biometric signature of the bio-sample inside you, Dorian. The corporation flagged you as proprietary stolen tech worth more than this entire vessel."Seraphine cursed under her breath, reaching down to steady Dorian as another wave of tremors wracked his frame. "So the port authority thinks we're a coal barge, but the company's elite hunters can still smell us coming a mile away?""Worse," Kenji said, snapping the diagnostic terminal shut with a sharp metallic click. "I saw the deployment logs flash across the port surveillance bypass. They didn't send a cleanup crew. They sent Vance."Dorian raised his head, his pale face slick with cold sweat. "Vance? Who is—""An elite corporate tracker," Kenji cut him off, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low pitch. "The kind of man they send when they want a targe
Crossing the Line
Chapter 26: Crossing the Line"Got it," Kenji hissed, his fingers hammering the final sequence into the diagnostic terminal as a stream of green text cascaded down the cracked screen. "Port authority logs are looping our transponder ghost-signal with a civilian coal barge three miles off our stern. We’re officially invisible.""And the corporate bounty files?" Seraphine demanded, keeping her eyes fixed on the narrow metal ladder leading up to the main deck. "Are we still flagged as missing assets, or did your little analog trick buy us an actual clean slate?""We’re clean on the port registries," Kenji replied, yanking the copper tap wire free and coiling it with sharp, practiced jerks. "As far as the maritime authorities know, the Iron Gander is carrying five hundred tons of low-grade anthracite and nothing else. But the corporation isn't relying on public registries anymore."Dorian shifted uncomfortably against the crate, his hands trembling as he pulled his jacket tighter around h

"If I drop this connection before the handshaking protocol locks in, the port authority's digital tripwire will trace us straight back to this bilge."Seraphine adjusted the tactical flashlight clamped between her teeth, her hands busy securing the auxiliary power cell to Dorian’s shivering shoulder. "If you don't hurry up, your precious tripwire won't matter because the corporate cleanup crew will already be boarding us," she hissed, her voice muffled around the metal casing.Dorian sat slumped against a wooden crate, his breathing shallow and err
