Chapter 7: The Binding Ritual

The air in the hidden bunker tasted of rust and old cigarette smoke. Dorian sat on the edge of a stained cot, his hands clamped between his knees to stop them from vibrating. The gold shimmer under his skin hadn't fully retreated this time; it lingered like a fever, making his pulse thrum against his eardrums in a heavy, rhythmic beat. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the Shadow Walker’s neck snap. He didn't just see it; he felt the click of the bone in his own mind.

"I’m still shaking," Dorian whispered, staring at a crack in the concrete floor. "Is this ever going to stop? It feels like I’ve got a live wire taped to my spine."

Kenji tossed a bottle of lukewarm water at him. "It stops when you learn how to vent, kid. Right now, you’re basically a walking pressure cooker. That 'Shatter' move you pulled back there? That wasn't you being a hero. That was your system blowing a gasket because it had nowhere else to put the juice."

"I didn't mean to do it," Dorian said, catching the bottle with fumbling fingers. "I just wanted them to stop hurting Seraphine. I didn't want to... dismantle them."

"Well, you did," Seraphine said, leaning against the heavy steel door of the bunker. She was stitching the tear in her leather sleeve with a needle and thread she’d found in Kenji’s medkit. She looked remarkably calm for someone who had nearly been executed ten minutes ago. "And honestly, Dorian? You saved my life. But Kenji is right. Your 'heat' is off the charts. I can feel the radiation from here. It’s like standing next to a furnace."

"So what am I supposed to do?" Dorian asked, his voice rising in pitch. "Take a cold shower? Go for a run? How do I turn the volume down on my own blood?"

Kenji pulled a chair around and sat backward on it, resting his arms on the headrest. He looked Dorian dead in the eye, his expression grimmer than usual. "You can't just turn it off, Dorian. That’s not how Ardent blood works. You’re a Beacon. You’re designed to generate power, and usually, that power would be distributed. You’d have a Court. You’d have Knights. You’d have a whole infrastructure to soak up the excess."

"I don't have a Court!" Dorian yelled. "I have a library card and a bunch of unpaid bills! I don't have anyone!"

"Actually," Seraphine said, biting off a piece of thread. She looked up, her violet eyes shimmering with a calculating light. "You have us. Or, more specifically, you could have a Consort."

Dorian blinked, the water bottle slipping an inch in his grip. "A what? A Consort? Like a... like a backup singer?"

"More like a lightning rod," Kenji grunted. "In the old days, an Ardent never traveled alone. They were always paired with a high-level supernatural—a vampire, a shifter, something durable. The Consort acts as a ground. They take the excess energy you're putting out and they process it. It keeps you from exploding and it keeps them... well, it makes them incredibly powerful."

"Wait, so I’m supposed to just... leak my soul into someone else?" Dorian asked, a look of pure disbelief on his face. "That sounds incredibly invasive. And weird. Is it weird? It feels weird."

"It’s a Binding Rite, Dorian," Seraphine explained, stepping away from the door and walking toward him. She moved with that predatory grace that usually made his skin crawl, but right now, there was something almost desperate in her eyes. "It’s a blood-bond. It’s a spiritual and physical union that links our fates. If we do it, my House’s signature will mask yours. To the rest of the city, you’ll just look like another Voss vassal. Your 'scent' will vanish."

"Masked?" Dorian repeated. "You mean I could go back to being a nobody? I could go to work and not have people trying to eat my face?"

"In a manner of speaking," Kenji said, though he didn't look happy about it. "But there’s a catch, kid. A big one. A Binding isn't a subscription you can cancel. Once you link your blood to hers, she’s in your head. She’s in your veins. You’ll feel what she feels. And she’ll have a direct line to your power. If she decides to turn on you, you’ve given her the keys to the castle."

"I wouldn't turn on him," Seraphine snapped, her gaze flickering to Kenji. "I’m trying to save him! The Thirteen are already moving. You heard what that Walker said. They felt the Shatter. They aren't going to send scouts next time; they’re going to send a demolition squad."

"And your father just happens to want a Bound Ardent in the family," Kenji countered. "Don't act like this is all charity, Princess. If you bind him, House Voss becomes the most powerful faction in the world overnight."

"Does anyone care what I think?" Dorian cut in, standing up so abruptly the cot groaned. "I'm sitting right here! You're talking about me like I’m a battery you’re trying to install in a car!"

"We're talking about your survival, Dorian!" Seraphine said, her voice softening as she reached out a hand. She didn't touch him, but he could feel the cool air around her fingers. "Look at your hands. Look at the walls. You’re literally glowing. You think you can hide like that? You’ll be found in an hour. This is the only way to hide in plain sight."

Dorian looked at his palms. The golden veins were pulsing in time with his heart. He felt a sudden, sharp pang of loneliness—the realization that his old life, the boring, safe, lonely life of a warehouse worker, was dead. There was no going back. There was only the fire in his chest and the monsters at the door.

"So, what does this 'union' look like?" Dorian asked, his voice barely a whisper. "Is it... is it a marriage? Am I getting married to a vampire?"

"It’s a political and biological necessity," Seraphine said, a small, sad smile playing on her lips. "In the eyes of our law, yes, it’s a marriage. But more than that, it’s a promise. My blood for your light. I protect you, I hide you, and in exchange, I carry the burden of your power so it doesn't kill you."

"Dorian, don't rush this," Kenji warned. "She’s a Voss. They’re born with silver tongues and stone hearts. Once you sign that contract, you’re hers."

"And if I don't?" Dorian asked, looking at Kenji. "What's the plan? We keep running? We keep letting people die for me? You saw what happened tonight. I killed someone, Kenji. I don't want to do that again. I don't want to be a King of Graves."

Kenji sighed, his shoulders sagging. He looked older in the dim light of the bunker, the shadows deep in the lines of his face. "If you don't bind... you won't last a week. Your body will give out, or the Thirteen will find a way to harvest you while you're still screaming."

Dorian turned back to Seraphine. She was waiting, her violet eyes steady, her hand still outstretched. She looked beautiful, and terrifying, and like the only life raft in a very dark ocean.

"Is it going to hurt?" Dorian asked.

"The Binding?" Seraphine whispered. "A little. But the relief afterward... you’ll finally be able to breathe again, Dorian. No more humming in your ears. No more shaking. Just... peace."

"Peace," Dorian repeated. It sounded like a fairy tale. "Okay. If it keeps me alive, and it keeps people away from me... let’s do it."

Seraphine’s breath hitched. For a second, her composure broke, and Dorian saw a flash of something that looked like genuine relief—or perhaps victory. She quickly masked it, nodding solemnly.

"We’ll need to prepare," she said. "The ritual requires a specific alignment. We have a few hours before dawn. Kenji, do you have any ceremonial salt? Or at least some pure iron?"

"In the locker," Kenji muttered, standing up and heading toward the back of the bunker. "I can't believe I’m actually helping a vampire steal an Ardent. My ancestors are probably spinning so fast they’re boring holes in their coffins."

"You're not stealing him, Kenji," Seraphine said, her voice light. "You're securing the future."

Dorian sat back down on the cot, his head in his hands. "I need a minute. Just... one minute to pretend I’m still a guy who likes vintage soda cans and cheap ramen."

"Take all the time you need, Dorian," Seraphine said softly. "I’ll be right here."

She walked back toward the door, pulling her phone from a hidden pocket in her tactical vest. She turned away from Dorian, her thumb moving quickly over the screen.

Dorian glanced up, his enhanced vision catching the glow of her screen even from across the room. He wasn't trying to spy; his eyes just seemed to lock onto the light instinctively now.

A message was displayed in a secure, encrypted window. It wasn't a friendly text. It was a command.

FROM: AUGUSTIN VOSS

SUBJECT: STATUS

The Cleaners are on standby. If the boy is not Bound by sunrise, I will assume the asset is compromised. We will level the Sector and start over. Do not fail me, Seraphine.

Dorian felt a cold chill wash over him, far colder than the Shadow Walkers’ blades. He looked at Seraphine’s back—the silver hair, the elegant posture, the woman who had just promised him 'peace.'

She tucked the phone away and turned back to him, her face a mask of perfect, concerned empathy. "Are you okay, Dorian? You look like you've seen a ghost."

Dorian swallowed hard, his heart hammering against his ribs. The gold in his veins flickered, not with rage this time, but with a sharp, jagged spark of realization.

"Yeah," Dorian said, his voice steady despite the terror clawing at his throat. "I’m fine. Just... getting ready for the wedding."

"Good," Seraphine said, stepping toward the center of the room to begin the ritual. "Everything is going to be perfect. You’ll see."

Dorian watched her, his mind racing. He was being offered a cage or a grave, and the sun was only a few hours away. He looked at Kenji, who was busy sorting through iron filings, unaware of the threat looming over them. Dorian realized then that he wasn't just a King or a Beacon. He was a piece on a board, and the person holding his hand was already planning his next move.

"Let's get started," Dorian said, standing up. "I don't want to keep your father waiting."

Seraphine paused, her eyes narrowing for a fraction of a second. "My father? Why would he be waiting?"

"You know," Dorian said, forced a small, awkward shrug. "Billionaires. I’m sure he’s got a very busy schedule. Wouldn't want to be late for the big reveal."

Seraphine smiled, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "He’ll be delighted, Dorian. Truly delighted."

As the first grain of salt hit the floor, Dorian felt the golden hum in his blood grow louder, but it wasn't a warning of an attack this time. it was a warning of a trap. And for the fi

rst time in his life, Dorian Ashford decided he wasn't going to just sit there and let it snap shut.
