Chapter 29: Turning the Blade

"Stay down, Dorian," Kenji snapped, not even turning around as he kept his eyes locked on the twisting maze of steam pipes stretching across the lower engineering deck. "One wrong step and that spinal shunt is going to blow its seals. We don't need you bleeding out before Vance even gets his hands on you."

"I’m not... useless," Dorian wheezed, his hands clawing weakly at the rusted metal plating of the deck as another violent tremor wracked his frame. The crimson light glowing beneath the skin of his collarbone pulsed erratically, casting a sickly, bioluminescent hue across his contorted features. "I can feel him. In the static... down the corridor."

Seraphine dropped to one knee beside the boy, shoving him firmly back against the bulkhead. "Shut up, Dorian. Listen to Kenji. If Vance is tracking your biometric signature, every word you choke out is basically screaming our GPS coordinates right into his earpiece."

"She’s right," Kenji whispered, his body tense as a heavy metallic thud echoed from the upper catwalk, followed by the faint, distinctive scrape of a reinforced tactical boot against industrial grating. "He’s close. Too close."

Without another word, Kenji vanished into the deafening white roar of the auxiliary steam turbines, his dark silhouette melting instantly into the shifting plumes of scalding vapor. Seraphine pulled Dorian deeper into the cramped shadow behind a massive cooling manifold, her pistol raised, the safety clicking off with a crisp, lethal snap that barely cut through the machinery's thunderous heartbeat.

Footsteps approached—heavy, measured, and entirely unhurried. The unmistakable pace of a predator who knew he held all the cards.

"Kenji," a voice drifted through the steam, smooth, modulated, and dripping with chilling professional calm. "I know you're down here, old friend. You were always sentimental about these rust buckets. Always hiding in the bilges when things got complicated."

Kenji didn't answer.

Seraphine held her breath, her finger tightening against the trigger as a tall, armored figure materialized through the thick white haze. Vance. Even in the dim, pulsing emergency lights, the sleek tactical plating and the faint blue glow of ocular cybernetics marked him as a machine designed exclusively for execution. He didn't carry a heavy rifle; instead, a monomolecular combat blade hummed softly in his right hand, vibrating with a high-pitched frequency that set the teeth on edge.

"You're slipping, Vance," Kenji's voice echoed from the shadows, bouncing off the steel walls so that it seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. "You used to check corners before walking into a kill zone."

Vance stopped dead in his tracks, his cybernetic eye spinning as it scanned the empty air. "Ten years, Kenji. And you're still running missions for dead causes and broken toys. The board wrote you off a long time ago. Why die for a walking biology experiment?"

"Call it professional pride," Kenji mocked.

In a blinding burst of movement, Vance lunged toward the source of the sound, his blade cleaving the air with lethal precision. But Kenji wasn't there. Instead, Kenji’s boot lashed out from behind a massive turbine housing, catching Vance squarely in the side of his knee. The tactical armor absorbed most of the kinetic impact, but the sheer force threw the tracker off balance for a split second.

It was all the opening Kenji needed.

He lunged forward, slamming his shoulder directly into Vance's chest, driving the heavier man hard against the primary steam manifold. Sparks showered over them like a cascade of dying stars, illuminating their violent struggle in harsh, flickering relief. Vance recovered instantly, his forearm coming up in a brutal elbow strike that cracked against Kenji's jaw, sending a spray of dark blood across the steel plating.

"You're out of your depth, Kenji!" Vance roared, driving his fist toward Kenji’s throat with cybernetically enhanced speed.

Kenji ducked beneath the blow at the last possible millisecond, the wind of Vance's punch rushing past his ear like a razor. Grabbing a heavy industrial wrench lying near the base of the turbine, Kenji swung it with both hands, smashing it directly into the manual release valve of the high-pressure steam line.

Hiss—!

A deafening wall of blinding, white-hot steam erupted instantly from the ruptured valve, filling the immediate compartment with a suffocating, scalding fog.

Vance cursed loudly as the superheated vapor blasted across his face and optical sensors, temporarily blinding his cybernetics and drowning out his comms link in a roar of white noise. "Damn you!"

"Seraphine! Now!" Kenji yelled over the screaming hiss of escaping pressure.

Seraphine didn't hesitate. Leaving Dorian pressed safely against the bulkhead, she sprinted through the swirling fog, leaping onto Vance's back with the agility of a striking cat. Before the corporate tracker could shake her off, she wrapped her arm around his throat in a tight, merciless chokehold while driving the pommel of her pistol downward with all her weight against the back of his neck, right where his tactical rig interfaced with his spine.

Vance seized up instantly, his enhanced reflexes short-circuiting under the sudden neurological shock. He staggered backward, slamming heavily into the bulkhead, before his knees finally buckled. He dropped to the floor like a felled tree, his armor hissing softly as the internal systems flickered and died.

Kenji stood over him, panting heavily, wiping a streak of blood from his split lip with the back of his hand. He kicked Vance’s dropped combat blade far out of reach, then reached down and tore the glowing corporate transceiver right off the tracker's chest rig, crushing it beneath his boot heel until the circuits sparked and went completely dark.

Seraphine landed lightly beside him, her chest heaving as she kept her gun trained on the unconscious body at their feet. "Is he dead?"

"Out cold," Kenji muttered, staring down at his own trembling hands. The adrenaline was beginning to wear off, leaving a hollow, aching void in its place. "His comms are fried. Command won't even know he missed his check-in for another hour."

Dorian crawled slowly out from the shadows, pulling himself up by gripping the edge of a cooling unit, his face pale and slick with sweat. "We... we actually beat him?"

"We bought ourselves some time," Kenji replied, looking from the broken tracker on the floor to the narrow ladder leading back up toward the upper decks.

Seraphine walked over, searching Vance’s tactical belt and pulling out a heavy, encrypted data-slate that was still blinking with active corporate sub-routines. She tossed it directly to Kenji, her expression grim and unreadable.

"You took a massive risk back there," Seraphine said, her voice dropping to a low, intense whisper as she studied the bruises forming along Kenji's jawline. "We both know you could have walked away from this life years ago. You didn't owe us a damn thing. Why didn't you just let Vance take the kid and slip away into the dark like you always do?"

Kenji caught the data-slate, his fingers tightening around the cold metal casing as he stared down at the blinking corporate seals glowing on the screen. He opened his mouth to reply, a sharp retort ready on his tongue, but before a single word could escape, the ship's emergency klaxons suddenly blared to life overhead, filling the engine room with a deafening, rhythmic red pulse.

The heavy steel hatch at the top of the engineering ladder slammed open with a deafening crash, and the sharp, magnified voice of the freighter's captain echoed down through the stairwell, trembling with absolute terror.

"Attention down in the bilges! We've just been flagged by a corporate naval blockade five miles off our port bow! They’re locking down all mar

itime frequencies and ordering us to cut engines immediately!"

Seraphine demanded, keeping her eyes fixed on the narrow metal ladder leading up to the main deck.
