Chapter 28: Iron and Steam

"Vance isn't the type to wait for a harbor clearance," Kenji muttered, sliding his combat knife from its sheath with a dry, whispering hiss. "He’s already aboard. I found a fresh boot print on the ladder leading down from the main deck—and it definitely doesn't belong to any deckhand on this rust bucket."

Seraphine's grip tightened around her weapon, her knuckles turning bone-white in the dim yellow emergency glow of the hold. "How long ago?"

"Minutes. Maybe less," Kenji replied, his eyes scanning the labyrinth of massive steel pipes and towering auxiliary steam turbines that hummed with a deafening, vibrating roar. "He’s moving quiet. Trying to secure the asset without tripping shipboard alarms or alerting the crew."

"Which means he wants Dorian breathing," Seraphine said, casting a sharp glance toward the shivering youth slumped against a bulkhead.

Dorian tried to push himself up, his teeth gritted against the sudden, agonizing flare of pain radiating from his spine. "I can walk. I can fight."

"Stay down, Dorian," Seraphine snapped, pressing a firm hand against his chest to keep him grounded. "With every step you take, that crimson light under your skin pulses like a neon beacon. You try to throw a punch right now, and your nervous system will short out before you even touch him."

"She’s right," Kenji agreed, not looking back as he crouched low beside a massive intake valve. "We don't use firearms. A stray round punches through a steam line or punctures the outer hull, and we all drown or scald before Vance even draws his blade. This is close-quarters. Knife and muscle."

"And if he has cybernetics?" Dorian gasped, clutching his collarbone as another wave of violent crimson spasms wracked his frame.

"Then we aim for the joints and pray the rust on this ship slows him down," Kenji said coldly. "Seraphine, take Dorian deeper into the maintenance shaft behind the secondary turbine. Keep him quiet. If I don't come back in five minutes..."

"Don't talk like an idiot," Seraphine interrupted, her voice sharp and unyielding. "I'm not hiding while you play hero against a corporate executioner."

"It's not a heroic sacrifice, it's tactical math," Kenji hissed, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute finality. "If Vance corners all three of us in this open bilge, we die together. Divide his attention, and maybe one of us walks out of here."

Before Seraphine could argue further, a sharp metallic clink echoed from the upper catwalk, cutting cleanly through the deep-throated roar of the ship's engines.

Kenji vanished into the shadows beneath a towering manifold of rusted iron pipes, his movements swift and silent.

Seraphine grabbed Dorian by the collar, hauling the struggling youth backward into the claustrophobic gap behind the secondary turbine. The air here was thick with the suffocating stench of hot grease, sulfur, and the constant, rhythmic vibration of the churning screw propeller beneath the water line.

"Breathe, Dorian. Slow and shallow," Seraphine whispered fiercely against his ear, her eyes darting back toward the open space of the cargo hold. "Do not let that light flare. If he sees the glow, we're finished."

Dorian nodded weakly, his hands clawing desperately at his own chest as the experimental spinal shunt flared with erratic, burning feedback. The crimson light beneath his skin pulsed violently, casting eerie, shifting red shadows against the wet steel walls.

Out in the main engine room, a heavy boot heel crunched against the gritted metal grating.

Silence followed—heavy, suffocating, and absolute, save for the mechanical heartbeat of the freighter. Vance was listening, testing the acoustics of the lower hold, hunting for the erratic rhythm of a frightened heartbeat or the unstable hum of a rogue bio-beacon.

A shadow detached itself from the darkness near the primary intake valve.

Vance stepped into the dim amber light, his dark tactical coat blending seamlessly with the grime of the bilge. His face was half-concealed behind a polished, obsidian visor that scanned the room with a faint, cyclical infrared sweep. A suppressed service pistol was held low and steady in his right hand, while his left arm hummed with the faint, deadly capacitance of heavy military-grade sub-dermal servos.

"I know you're down here, Kenji," Vance's voice cut through the ambient roar, carrying an unnatural, digitized edge. "You can't outrun the telemetry. The asset belongs to the board. Turn it over, and maybe I let you slip off the side before I log the wreckage."

Kenji didn't answer. He remained coiled like a spring in the dark beneath the catwalk stairs, his thumb resting lightly on the hilt of his combat knife.

Vance took two slow, calculated steps forward, his visor sweeping the space directly toward the maintenance shaft where Seraphine and Dorian were hidden. The infrared beam licked across the edge of the secondary turbine housing, coming dangerously close to Dorian's trembling frame.

Seraphine stopped breathing. Her finger hooked around the trigger of her heavy service pistol, even though she knew Kenji’s warning about the steam lines was right. If she fired, the noise would bring Vance down on them instantly.

Vance paused, tilting his head as if catching a faint thermal anomaly bouncing off the hot grease of the turbine. "Found you."

Without warning, Kenji erupted from the shadows, launching himself upward from the lower deck directly at Vance's blind side. His combat knife slashed downward in a vicious arc aimed straight at the joint of the hunter's armored shoulder.

Vance’s augmented reflexes were terrifyingly fast. Even mid-stride, the tracker spun on his heel, his left arm coming up with a heavy metallic clang to block Kenji’s blade. The impact sent a shower of bright white sparks cascading into the damp air between them.

"Old man," Vance sneered, his voice dripping with casual contempt as he shoved Kenji back with hydraulic force. "You should have stayed retired."

Kenji skidded across the slick metal grating, his boots spraying rust flakes, but he recovered instantly, ducking low under a sweeping punch that would have crushed a normal man's skull. He drove his elbow upward into Vance's midsection, feeling the solid resistance of reinforced composite plating beneath the tracker's tactical vest.

"I tried," Kenji grunted, rolling to the side as Vance’s suppressed pistol barked once.

The bullet screamed past Kenji's ear, punching cleanly through a high-pressure steam line a few feet away.

Hiss—!

A blinding, shrieking plume of white vapor instantly erupted from the ruptured pipe, filling the narrow engine bay with a dense, scalding fog that reduced visibility to zero. The deafening roar of the escaping steam drowned out all other sound, turning the cramped bilge into a chaotic, blinding whiteout.

"Kenji!" Seraphine screamed from the shadows, her voice instantly swallowed by the roar of the steam.

"Get back!" Kenji shouted through the white hiss, his eyes stinging and skin burning as he lunged blindly into the vapor cloud toward where he knew Vance stood.

In the blinding chaos of steam and heat, Vance’s thermal visor flickered wildly, blinded by the massive ambient temperature spike of the ruptured line. He swept his pistol back and forth, firing a blind, suppressive burst into the mist that pinged uselessly off the ship's steel ribs.

Kenji closed the distance by sheer instinct, using the rhythmic thrum of the floorboards to track the heavy, mechanical whir of Vance's augmented servo-arm. He dropped low, sliding across the grease-slicked deck right beneath Vance's guard, and drove his shoulder upward into the hunter's knees.

Vance stumbled backward with a sharp grunt, losing his footing on the wet grating.

Before the tracker could recover his balance, Kenji was on him, his left hand gripping Vance’s weapon wrist while his right hand drove the combat knife down toward the exposed seam of the obsidian visor.

Vance snarled, his cybernetically enhanced fingers locking around Kenji's throat in a death grip that began to cut off the older runner's air supply. Kenji’s vision darkened at the edges, his boots kicking frantically against the deck as the tracker's superior hydraulic strength slowly forced the knife blade away.

"Not... today," Kenji choked out, his fingers digging desperately into Vance's forearm servos, searching for the manual disconnect port.

From the shadows of the turbine recess, Dorian watched the brutal struggle, his chest heaving as the crimson light beneath his collarbone flared into a blinding, painful brilliance. The sheer stress of the combat and the frantic surge of adrenaline triggered a violent neurological feedback loop through his altered spine.

"Dorian, stop! Don't look!" Seraphine yelled, grabbing his shoulders as his body began to convulse violently.

"I have to..." Dorian gasped, his voice cracking as raw, unnatural strength flooded his trembling limbs. He tore himself away from Seraphine's grip before she could stop him, staggering out into the edge of the steam-filled chamber with his hands outstretched.

Vance, still struggling to pin Kenji, caught the sudden flash of intense crimson illumination in his flickering thermal display. He turned his head slightly, his visor locking onto Dorian’s trembling, glowing figure standing mere yards away.

"Asset... secured," Vance wheezed beneath Kenji's grip, a cruel grin spreading across his face as his free hand shifted its grip toward a secondary holster on his belt.

Kenji saw the movement and roared, throwing every remaining ounce of his weight forward to pin the tracker's arm, but Vance was too strong, his hydraulic servos whining as he began to push Kenji off.

Dorian screamed—a sound half-human and half-mechanical—as he slammed his palms directly against the side of the secondary steam turbine’s main manual release valve, wrenching it open with a fury born of pure desperation.

CRACK-HISS!

A wall of scalding, high-pressure white steam blasted directly out of the valve, enveloping Vance and Kenji in an instantaneous, blinding inferno of heat and noise.

Vance shrieked—a raw, human sound of absolute agony as the superheated vapor bypassed his tactical seals, frying the sensitive ocular electronics of his visor and searing the exposed skin of his neck. His grip on Kenji’s throat instantly shattered into limp spasms.

Kenji rolled away coughing violently, his lungs burning as he scrambled backward out of the direct line of the steam blast.

In the blinding, swirling white chaos, Vance collapsed onto his knees, his visor sparking and crackling with dying blue electrical arcs as he clutched blindly at his ruined face.

Seraphine rushed out from the shadows, grabbing Kenji by the arm and hauling him to his feet while using her free hand to yank the staggering, half-conscious Dorian away from the scalding valve.

"Move! Now!" Seraphine yelled over the roar of the escaping steam, dragging Kenji and the trembling youth toward the aft maintenance hatch before Vance could recover his weapon.

Behind them, through the dense, swirling fog of the engine room, Vance slumped heavily against the steel bulkhead, his chest heaving, his fingers clawi

ng uselessly at the deck plates as the ship plunged deeper into the dark, open waters of the southern coast.
