“Orion?”
The man who alighted from the cab was a tall, slim figure with an athletic build. His face was chiseled and had striking features. He was clad in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt; however, there was an old military backpack strapped to his back.
“Orion?”
His name was called out softly, and he turned to look. Right there he met eyes with the woman he had left five years ago.
Time went still, and so many moments seemed to pass in that instant.
Five years ago, after their wedding, he left for a top military secret mission. It was an order from the higher-ups in the military. It hurt him so bad to leave, but he had no choice.
However, he made a vow to return, and today he had fulfilled that promise.
After confirming it was him, Lydia froze by the door, barely holding back the urge to let tears rain down her cheeks.
Meanwhile, from how she looked, Orion couldn't begin to imagine everything she had gone through while he was gone.
“Hey, baby.” He called out softly and watched how her emotions crumbled before him.
“It’s you? It’s truly you?” Lydia was still finding it difficult to believe. She couldn’t blink her eyes as she felt he might vanish the moment she did.
She had just fought her family and was sent out because she refused to abandon him, and in the next moment he came back.
Five years of longing for this moment, yet he was right there before her, and she didn’t know how to react.
“Yes, it’s me, baby. I know I have been gone for so long, but I am here now.” Orion clutched the handle of his backpack tightly as a splitting pain shot through his heart from seeing those tears stream down her cheeks.
He badly wanted to go over and wipe them away and also reconfirm his promise to her. This time, he was here to stay and was never going to leave. Just as the thought crossed his mind, he heard her speak again.
“Do you know what I’ve endured all these years?” Lydia lashed out. She immediately stomped her feet towards him with clenched fists, intending to punch him.
However, as soon as she wanted to strike his broad chest, she almost collapsed to the floor and bawled her eyes out.
Instinctively, Orion pushed forward and pulled her in.
His hands wrapped around her, hugging her gently, yet longingly. How he had wished for this moment for so long.
His lips parted, and though the mission he had been on was a top-secret one and should in no circumstances be leaked to anyone; he felt he owed her some profound explanation.
“I am so sorry for making you wait. I—“
“Look who’s here!”
Just as he was about to complete his sentence, a cold snort erupted from the door.
Orion looked and saw the familiar face of none other than Damein.
“Are you back? Hahahaha. I didn’t want to believe it at first. Now I can tell where the smell of poverty is coming from.”
Damein continued, laughing out loud as he stood by the door.
“Tell me, did you return because you have wandered the earth and have found nothing?” Damein continued to ridicule him.
Orion said nothing but kept on hugging his wife. He saw how she had wanted to respond to Damein, but he caressed her back, soothing her calmly. There was no need to bother themselves with someone like him.
“Hm, this is so embarrassing!” Damien shook his head disgustedly when he was being ignored and walked back into the house.
After a while, Orion and Lydia walked hand in hand back into the house. When they got to where the other family members were, they became the center of attention, especially Orion, as after all, Damien had already taken the news over to turn already.
Everyone including Victor, was finding it difficult to believe their eyes. The man whom they were talking about and who had disappeared for so many years was now back.
“You!!” Victor tried to say something, but he was too shocked to.
“It's me, father-in-law.” Orion introduced himself properly.
Everyone looked at him with contempt. He dared to shamelessly say those words after vanishing for five years?
“How shameless! You disgraced our family and left my daughter for so long without any contact? And now you are back? For what?” Victo harrumphed. His face contorted with anger.
“Why are you still holding hands with him?” Damein already had enough of them acting like a loving couple when they shouldn’t be.
In a fit of anger, he approached them and grabbed Lydia's hand to pull her away.
“Leave that filth alone!”
However, before he could complete his attempt, Orion's fierce yet intimidating voice made him freeze in his tracks.
“Let go of my wife!”
Damein felt chills run down his spine, and he realized if he didn’t let go, he might actually be eaten alive. He had never felt such pressure in his life from anyone not to talk of Orion before.
Subconsciously, he let go of Lydia's hand but with a laugh to brush off the feeling.
“Hmp!”
Victor and the others watched this completely stunned.
Shortly, he ordered
“Return to where you came from. We don’t want you here. You should have remained where you are and never made any appearance here. Leave now!”
Lydia panicked and immediately spoke out.
“No, Dad, Orion is my husband, and I won’t let him be thrown out like some stranger!”
Victor almost felt like going over to slap her to death. With how stubborn she had been about Orion, he knew he wouldn’t be able to change her mind so instead he warned.
“Siding with him will cost you your place in the family. Are you sure you want to risk that?” He asked sternly.
Lydia looked at Orion and clung to his arm even more. He felt touched by her actions even though he expected it.
Her next words confirmed everything over again.
“Yes, my mind is made up.” She uttered with unshaken resolve.
Orion smiled at her warmly and caressed her hand. He looked back at Victor and the others and said,
“I have no intention of fighting any of you, but I can assure you that I have no intention of abandoning my wife ever again.”
Victor, Damein, and everyone exchanged glances before bursting into chuckles. They laughed so hard in mockery for a while until they had their fill.
“How do you intend to take care of her? Look at you, apart from that shabby bag on your back, what else do you own?” Victor asked with a contemptuous smirk on his lips.
Ignoring his disdainful remark. Orion affirmed.
“I will take care of my wife.”
“If that’s true, why don’t you show us if you can afford even the cheapest hotel in this city? You can’t speak bold words and have nothing to show for it, right?” Damein suddenly challenged him loudly for everyone to hear.
As expected, everyone looked at Orion curiously, waiting to see or hear what he was going to say.
With a subtle smile on his lips, Orion instead pulled out his phone and immediately sent a text.
“Prepare the residence. I am home.”

Chapter eight
Meanwhile, at the entrance of a military conference center within Crestwood, two figures alighted from an SUV. One was Ethan, while the other, a middle-aged man clad in military attire, was General Marcus Hale. The man was a highly respected senior officer who had served alongside Orion during several classified operations. He had received information earlier from Ethan about Orion's return to Crestwood. Though the news was very surprising, he decided to go to Crestwood to confirm things for himself.“Where is he now?” As they approached the building, Marcus asked curiously. “He’s living with his wife in the Whitmore villa,” Ethan said with a sigh.“What?” Marcus almost choked on his spit, and he froze in his tracks. His face paled in shock. He didn’t expect Orion, who had so much luxury at his disposal and also a private residence to settle for something less, especially with how the Whitmore family had a record of treating him and his wife badly. After a while, he shook his head

Orion and Lydia left the five-star restaurant and boarded a taxi back to the Whitmore mansion. As soon as they arrived, Orion noticed the look on Lydia's face. She looked upset but at the same time a bit scared. He could easily discern both of them, as he knew her situation more than anyone else. Before he could ask, she noticed his stare and subconsciously spoke.“What if Lucas harms my family business? You saw how enraged he looked right? I feel he could do something stupid.” “Don’t worry about it. You did nothing wrong. He had ulterior motives after all, and we were able to figure him out.” Orion assured her. A thought popped into his head, and he added,“I want you to save every message and document related to Lucas's investment proposal. Can you do that for me?” He asked unexpectedly. Lydia looked at him for a while. Though she didn’t understand why he wanted the details, she had no issues assembling them for him, so she nodded in agreement.Soon, both of them walked hand in h

The next day.Lydia received an invitation to a private business launch with an investor, Lucas Vance, who had attended the previous day's dinner party. In the details of the invite, Lucas explained that the meeting had the potential for an investment that could save Whitmore Globals from financial difficulties; however, Lydia didn’t buy it.Unfortunately, she had been very wary of Lucas since their previous meeting. Rather than focusing on the topic, he had spewed harsh remarks about her marriage and suggested that she would be happier with a more successful man.He might not have said it directly, but his actions hinted at who he meant-him. She couldn’t bring herself to believe the meeting he was inviting her to would be any different. That was why when he proposed offering Orion a job, she didn’t like the idea.“You have to attend!” Damein stood by the door shortly after giving her the invitation. He noticed the dejected look on her face and immediately added. “Mr. Lucas is an im

Moments after the dinner ended, Orion went off to look for Lydia. While he was busy pondering the report Ethan gave him, she seemed to have gone somewhere. He kept searching until he arrived at the small guest room within the mansion. When he looked inside, he saw Lydia seated on a couch, seemingly going through a stack of documents. Orion frowned. It was almost midnight, and while most family members had gone off to sleep, she was still awake.“Hey baby, are you still awake?” He opened the door gently so he wouldn't startle her.Regardless, it did. Lydia’s body perked up, and she immediately piled the documents and tried to hide them.Orion shook his head with a slight smile. He had seen it and had walked over already, yet she wanted to hide them?Though, he did understand her actions. She might not want him to be worried. However, as her husband, he couldn't help the feeling.“The company is struggling financially right?” He guessed as he took a seat close to her. Lydia blushed as

The next day arrived. Victor, the head of the Whitmore family organized a private dinner for business associates and friends to discuss the latest improvements to the family business. Every family member was expected to participate, including Lydia and Orion. They might not be held in any important regard; however, as the family tradition, everyone was supposed to attend.Inside the storeroom, Lydia pulled out a couple of male clothes she had kept from years ago. She had made sure to keep them clean and safe with the hope that one day Orion was going to return.Though they were outdated and weren’t fitted for such an occasion as per family standards, they were still good-looking and neat.“I am so sorry that this is all I can get. I couldn't buy you a new set of clothes.” Lydia said with a heavy heart. She had seen the flashy clothes the other family wore, and to say these were at the rock bottom wasn’t at all an exaggeration.“I’ll wear this one.” Orion didn’t think much about it.

“I bet even if we wait for years, he won’t be able to prove anything to us.” Victor sighed and shook his head. He could have looked away; however, because of the family reputation, he decided to reconsider his decision at least.“You can remain in the mansion temporarily, but that’s because Lydia refuses to let you leave,” he said. Hearing what he said, the other family members looked at him with deep frowns on their faces. They wanted to object, but because he was the head of the family, no one dared to. However, his next words reclaimed the lost smiles back on their faces.“However you shall receive no special treatment!”He specified before calling out for one of the guards.“Prepare the store room for him.” He ordered.Everyone was very pleased with this. Though Orion could remain on the premises, they wouldn't mind him staying there, as it was no different from trash.“You should be grateful that you have somewhere to sleep.” Damein chuckled heartily right in Orion's face to g
