"He’s down there, Drovic!" Lysenne screamed, her voice tearing at the soot-choked air. She didn't stop, didn't flinch as her fingers plunged into the debris, dragging aside jagged sheets of white-hot plating that hissed against the damp night air.

Drovic slid down the slope of the rubble, his heavy breathing a wet, ragged sound. "Princess—Gods, Lysenne, stand back! The slag is still shifting. If the floor collapses into the sub-basement, you’re not coming out."

"The sewers are a death trap, Lysenne," Drovic grunted, his one good hand tightening around the heavy, iron-bound staff he used as a crutch. "The pressure from the collapse has back-flooded the lower channels. We’ll be swimming in stagnant filth while those scouts hunt for survivors in the light."Lysenne didn't look back at him. She was already dragging Aerovan’s dead weight toward the mouth of the alleyway, her boots scraping against the jagged, pulverized stone of the ruins. "Then we don't use the sewers. We use the sky-walks."Drovic limped after her, his eyes widening. "The sky-walks? They’re exposed. They’re hanging over the main artery of the district. The Duchy has searchlights mounted on every ridge. We’d be silhouettes in a target gallery.""They aren't looking for us," Lysenne snapped, her voice cold and hollow. She stopped, shifting Aerovan’s limp form so she could better support his head. "They’re looking fo

"Aerovan, look at me!" Lysenne’s voice wasn't a command anymore; it was a plea, shattered and thin. She pressed two fingers to his throat. The pulse was there—a weak, fluttering bird trapped behind parchment-thin skin. "Drovic! He’s breathing, but he’s failing. We need to move him. Now!"Drovic peered into the crater, his face caked in grey ash and streaked with the dark, copper-scented blood of his own untreated wounds. He stared at the smith, then at the precarious pile of rubble above them. "The High Ward, Lysenne. It’s the only place with a surgeon who hasn't been turned to charcoal yet. But if we try to carry him across the open stretch, the Duchy scouts will pick us off before we reach the third intersection.""I don't care about the scouts," Lysenne hissed, her eyes snapping up to meet his. She adjusted her grip, pulling the heavy, charred weight of the blacksmith against her chest. "Clear a path through the storm drains. Use the ol

"Lift, damn you!" Lysenne shrieked, the command tearing through the stifling silence of the crater.Drovic didn't argue. He braced his shoulder against the warped iron plating, his teeth gritted until his jaw groaned. "On three. One, two—"The metal screeched, a sound like a dying god’s lament, and shifted inches to the left. Beneath it, sprawled across a bed of cooling slag, lay Aerovan. His apron was burned away, his skin was scorched, and his chest rose in a shallow, stuttering rhythm that defied the impossible weight of the collapse.Lysenne scrambled into the gap, heedless of the heat radiating from the cooling debris. She shoved a jagged fragment of masonry aside, her hands raw and bleeding, and caught Aerovan’s limp head in her lap."Aerovan? Aerovan, look at me!"His eyes fluttered open. They were cloudy, devoid of the sharp, analytical spark that had kept the East District alive for weeks. He looked at her, his lips parti

She pushed, heaving against a beam that seemed to groan in protest. Her muscles burned, every fiber of her body screaming from the exhaustion of the last seventy-two hours, but she didn't stop.Drovic scrambled

The silence of the crater was absolute, a tomb of cooling iron and grey, suffocating soot. Lysenne didn't wait for Drovic’s warning; she didn't even acknowledge the blood trickling from her own hairline, a warm, slick reminder that she was still anchored to the living world. She lunged toward the edge of the chimney, her boots skidding on the unstable slate of the roof before she scrambled down the ruins of the masonry with the desperate, clawing intensity of a wild animal."Lysenne, wait!" Drovic shouted, his voice cracking. He tried to follow, but his footing gave way. He cursed, his one good hand slamming into a jagged piece of rebar to steady himself. "The ground is still molten, damn you! You’ll melt your boots to your skin!""He’s down there, Drovic!" she screamed back, not looking up. Her voice was raw, stripped of all royal cadence. She was no longer a princess commanding a defense; she was a daughter of the wreckage, digging into the past to

The world did not return with a roar; it returned with the sound of settling dust and the hollow, rhythmic ticking of cooling metal.Lysenne lay pressed against the cold slate shingles of the neighboring warehouse, her breath hitching in her chest as she stared at the abyss. Where the forge had been—the heart of their defiance, the crucible of their hope—there was only a crater. A jagged, smoking wound in the earth, lined with the twisted, white-hot skeletal remains of iron girders."Aerovan," she gasped, the word tasting like copper and ash.A hand, thick and calloused, slammed onto her shoulder. She spun around, drawing a rusted dagger, only to find Drovic staring back at her. He was a wreck of a man. His tunic was a scorched rag, his one remaining good arm shaking with a tremor he couldn't control, and his face was smeared with so much soot that only the wild, desperate whites of his eyes were visible."Don't," Drovic rasped, his voice soun
