The heavy steel doors of the warehouse slammed shut with a sharp, booming echo that rattled the empty shelves and concrete floor.

Julian spun around instantly, raising his tactical rifle with both hands as a cold chill ran down his spine. The computer monitor in the corner flickered off, leaving only the dim, flickering streetlights shining down through the broken glass of the roof.

From the dark shadows near the back storage crates, a tall figure stepped out into the open space. He wore a long coat made of shimmering silver scales that absorbed the light around him. His face was entirely smooth, pale, and ageless, with two sharp horns curving back from his forehead like a crown of bone. His pure white eyes shone in the dark, fixed directly on them with a quiet, terrifying calm.

Lord Vane.

"You thought destroying the master clock in the core would trap me inside the ruins forever," Lord Vane said, his voice sounding like ice sliding across a frozen lake as he took a slow step forward. "The Vance family built New Oxford long before your ancestors learned how to build stone houses. A simple time loop was only ever a cage for children. You cannot kill what time has already forgotten."

Commander Eleanor Vance dropped her hand to the hilt of her silver dagger, her face turning pale as she stared at the ancient ruler. "Lord Vane... How did you track us here?"

"You left a digital signature the second you downloaded the bank files from the financial tower," Lord Vane replied smoothly, his white eyes never leaving Maya. "Human greed is so predictable. You think you won because you stole numbers on a screen. But money is just a game we invented."

Old Man Marrow gripped his rusted iron pipe tighter, stepping in front of Maya with a rough scowl. "We are not playing your games anymore, monster. The loop is broken, and the city knows you are nothing more than a thief with an army."

Lord Vane did not even look at Marrow. He raised his right hand, and a long blade of pure white light formed in his palm, casting a bright, harsh glow across his pale face.

"Step aside, old man," Lord Vane said softly. "The boy and the girl come with me. The core must be rebuilt, and this time, the reset will be permanent."

Julian felt a hot surge of anger block out any trace of fear. He remembered every single day spent bleeding in the dark train tunnels. He remembered every lie, every fake illness, and every cruel trick the Vance family had played on them for five hundred years. He stepped up beside Maya, locking his eyes onto the ancient enemy.

"We are not going anywhere with you," Julian said, his voice steady and hard.

Maya did not flinch, nor did she step back. Instead, a slow, dangerous smile crept across her lips. She reached into her hoodie pocket, pulled out her phone, and tapped the screen twice.

"You think you caught us in a trap, Lord Vane," Maya said, her voice ringing clearly through the empty warehouse. "Take a look at your master control network."

Lord Vane paused for a fraction of a second, his white eyes narrowing. He pressed his hand against his silver coat, tapping a hidden comms link.

Across the warehouse, the big computer terminal suddenly flickered back to life, bypassing the red shutdown warning entirely. A green loading bar rushed across the screen, hitting one hundred percent in a single second.

System transfer complete. All corporate patents, real estate deeds, and energy grid controls transferred to Malakor and Maya.

The red warning lights on the warehouse walls instantly turned blue, and the heavy steel doors that had locked shut a moment ago popped open with a loud mechanical hiss.

Lord Vane's calm expression cracked for the very first time. A flash of genuine shock crossed his ageless face as he looked down at his wrist controller, which was now flashing dead gray.

"You did not just steal the bank accounts," Lord Vane said, his voice dropping its cold calm as real anger crept into his tone. "You downloaded the foundation codes of the entire city."

"We didn't just steal your money," Maya said, stepping forward with her chin held high and her eyes flashing with a fierce, vindictive light. "We downloaded the legal ownership of every single building the Vance family owns in New Oxford. Legally, under your own corporate laws, you are now trespassing on our property."

Lord Vane let out a furious roar that shook the dust from the ceiling rafters. The white blade of light in his hand flared up into a blinding wave of energy, casting wild shadows across the walls.

"You insolent little rat!" Lord Vane shouted, raising his hand to strike.

Before he could swing the blade, Eleanor moved like lightning, throwing three small smoke bombs straight at Lord Vane's feet.

The canisters exploded instantly, filling the center of the warehouse with a thick, choking cloud of gray smoke that blinded the ancient ruler and blocked him from view.

"Run!" Eleanor shouted over the hiss of the smoke.

Julian grabbed Maya by the hand and bolted toward the open warehouse doors, with Marrow and Eleanor right behind them.

They burst out into the cool, rainy night air of the industrial alley, diving straight into the black sports car they had left waiting by the curb. Marrow slammed his foot down on the gas pedal, and the engine roared to life, spinning the tires against the wet asphalt as they rocketed away from the warehouse just as a massive wave of white fire blew the metal doors completely off their hinges behind them.

The sports car sped through the dark streets of New Oxford, the rain falling hard against the windshield as the city lights blurred into long streaks of red and yellow.

Julian sat in the passenger seat, catching his breath as he looked back through the rear window to make sure they were not being followed. The street behind them was empty, lit only by the steady glow of the normal streetlamps under the natural gray sky.

They had escaped Lord Vane again, but this time, the rules of the entire city had changed forever.

Maya sat beside him, leaning back against the leather seat. She wiped a smudge of soot from her forehead, her dark eyes still shining with the thrill of the victory. She looked over at Julian, her lips curving into a genuine, tired smile.

"Well, that went better than expected," Maya said softly.

Julian let out a short, disbelieving laugh, shaking his head as a warm feeling of pride washed over his chest. He reached over and squeezed her hand.

"You are completely insane, you know that?" Julian said.

"Maybe," Maya replied, her smile widening just a little bit. "But we are winning."

Marrow drove the car through the winding industrial roads, heading toward the northern edge of the city where the abandoned shipping yards met the open ocean. The rain began to clear up, revealing a pale, silver moon breaking through the clouds overhead.

After driving for another ten minutes, Marrow turned the car down a narrow gravel road that led toward an old, rusted metal pier jutting out into the dark water. Several large cargo ships sat docked along the pier, their decks dark and silent.

"Where are we going?" Eleanor asked from the back seat, leaning forward as she looked out at the water.

"Safe house number eight," Marrow grunted, cutting the engine as the car rolled to a stop near the edge of the pier. "It is an old smuggling dock controlled by the Iron Syndicate. If we want to hire a mercenary army to take down Lord Vane's remaining towers, this is where we find them."

Julian opened his door and stepped out onto the wet wood of the pier, breathing in the salty ocean air. It felt good, clean, and real. There were no time loops, no magic barriers, and no hidden cameras watching their every move.

Maya stepped out right behind him, walking to the edge of the wooden deck to look out across the dark waves. The wind caught her dark hair, blowing it gently across her face as she stared out toward the horizon where the lights of the upper city twinkled in the distance.

Julian walked over to stand beside her, resting his hands on the wooden railing. "What happens when Lord Vane comes back with his entire army?"

Maya looked up at him, her expression turning completely serious. Her dark eyes reflected the silver light of the moon, burning with a fierce, unyielding determination that nothing in the world could ever break.

"Then we don't wait for him to find us," Maya said, her voice dropping into a quiet, resolute tone. "We take the fight straight to his doorstep."

Before Julian could answer, a loud, sharp click echoed from the dark cargo ship docked right beside the pier.

A dozen heavy spotlights snapped on all at once, blinding them with a wall of harsh white light, while dozens of armed mercenaries stepped out from the shadows of the ship's deck, pointing their weapons straight at their heads.
