A thick, white gas hissed from the hidden wall vents, filling the narrow maintenance corridor with a sharp, chemical sting that immediately burned their throats.

Julian coughed hard, dropping to one knee as his vision blurred at the edges. Beside him, Old Man Marrow swore loudly, slamming his fist against the sealed steel door behind them while trying to pull his jacket collar up over his nose.

"The door is locked tight!" Marrow shouted through heavy coughs. "We are trapped!"

Commander Eleanor Vance drew her silver dagger and struck the wall panel with all her might, but the reinforced alloy did not even scratch. The air grew heavier with every second, stealing the breath from their lungs and turning their limbs weak and heavy.

Only Maya remained completely still in the center of the toxic fog. She did not panic, nor did she gasp for air. Instead, her dark eyes were wide and sharp as she stared at the black screen of her phone, her fingers flying across the dead glass with cold precision.

"Lord Vane knew we were coming," Eleanor gasped, her knees buckling as she slid down the cold concrete wall. "This entire hallway is a sealed execution chamber."

Julian forced himself to stand up, though his head spun wildly. He looked down at Maya, reaching out to pull her toward the corner. "Maya, we have to get out of here now! Forget the phone!"

"No," Maya said, her voice steady and clear despite the poison filling the room. "Lord Vane did not hack this system from the outside. He used a local override relay located right above us."

She pointed her phone straight up toward the ceiling grate. Through the iron bars, a small red indicator light blinked rhythmically in the dark ventilation shaft above.

"He is watching us right now," Maya said, a dangerous smile touching her lips. "And because he wanted to watch us die face-to-face through the security camera, he kept the local wireless transceiver active."

Julian gritted his teeth, fighting the dizziness in his head. "What do you need?"

"Buy me ten seconds," Maya said, tossing her jacket aside.

Julian did not hesitate. He raised his tactical rifle, aimed straight at the ceiling ventilation grate, and pulled the trigger three times. Bullets shattered the iron bars in a shower of sparks and falling metal, opening a direct path into the vertical shaft above.

Marrow scrambled forward despite his age, grabbing the edge of the metal opening and hauling his heavy frame upward with a grunt. He reached inside and grabbed a small, black metal box wired directly into the wall cables, ripping it out with a violent yank.

The hissing sound of the poison gas stopped instantly. The digital display on the massive steel door flashed green, and the heavy locks clicked open with a loud mechanical release.

Fresh air rushed into the corridor, and Julian took a deep, desperate breath, coughing as his lungs cleared. Eleanor stood up slowly, leaning against the wall for support, while staring at Maya with profound shock.

"You baited him," Eleanor said, realization dawning in her eyes. "You knew he would activate the local transceiver to watch us choke, so you used his own vanity to find his relay."

"Arrogance is always a tyrant's greatest weakness," Maya replied coldly, slipping her phone back into her pocket. She picked up her jacket and stepped over the threshold into the inner chamber beyond the door.

They pushed forward into the core reactor room, a vast circular hall filled with towering columns of glowing blue energy conduits. The air here hummed with raw power, casting long shadows across the smooth metal floor.

At the far end of the chamber, standing on a raised observation platform overlooking the main reactor, was Lord Vane himself.

He was an older man with silver hair and tailored black robes, holding a gold-headed cane in one hand. His face was carved from stone, completely devoid of warmth, and his cold gray eyes looked down at them with absolute contempt.

"I must admit, I am impressed," Lord Vane said, his voice echoing off the high metal ceiling. "Most rats would have suffocated in that tunnel within thirty seconds. But you always managed to be an exception, Maya."

Julian stepped out in front of his sister, raising his rifle directly at the old tyrant's chest. "It is over, Vane. Your bank accounts are empty, your security grid is down, and your estate is surrounded by the Shadow Vanguard."

Lord Vane did not even blink. Instead, a slow, terrifying smile spread across his thin lips. He tapped his gold cane twice against the metal floor.

"You think money and soldiers matter in this room?" Lord Vane asked softly. "You think you won because you stole a few digital ledgers from a local vault?"

The floor beneath their feet suddenly began to vibrate with a deep, violent tremor. The glowing blue conduits around the room flared from blue to a blinding, angry crimson.

"What did you do?" Eleanor demanded, stepping up beside Julian with her silver dagger drawn.

"I did not lock this room to kill you," Lord Vane said, turning around to face the massive main reactor core behind him. "I locked this room because the core is set to manual overload. If my heart stops beating, or if I press this final override switch in my hand, this entire mountain and every living soul within fifty miles will be erased in a nuclear flash."

Julian froze. He looked at the glowing red core, then back at Lord Vane's hand. The old man was holding a small, red detonator connected directly to the facility's primary reactor core.

"You would blow up your own home just to kill us?" Julian asked, his voice shaking with disbelief.

"This home is built on five hundred years of blood and power," Lord Vane answered, his eyes burning with fanaticism. "If I cannot rule New Oxford, then no one will."

Maya stepped past Julian, walking slowly toward the raised platform. Her face was completely devoid of fear, replaced by a cold, calculating mask that made even Lord Vane pause.

"You will not press that button," Maya said, her voice echoing clearly across the vast hall.

"Try me, little girl," Lord Vane laughed, his thumb resting directly over the red trigger. "Come one step closer, and I end this entire world right here and now."

Julian reached out to grab Maya's arm, telling her to stop, but before he could speak, the heavy steel doors behind them slammed shut once again with a deafening crash, sealing the entire chamber.
