The Sanctuary of Echoes had never been breached. For over a thousand years, the hidden refuge had remained beyond the reach of kings, armies, gods, and monsters alike. Entire empires had risen and fallen without ever learning of their existence. The sanctuary existed between layers of reality, concealed behind ancient barriers woven by the greatest mages in history.

Yet as James stood upon the mountain platform and stared toward the horizon, one terrifying fact became impossible to ignore.  The impossible had just happened. The Hollow Legion had found them.  Dark figures poured from the endless sea of clouds like a living tide. Thousands of soldiers marched through the sky itself. Black armour reflected the fading sunlight. Silver runes glowed across their weapons. Their formation remained perfectly disciplined despite the impossible terrain beneath them. At the front of the army stood the man carrying the black crystal spear.

The same man who had overseen the destruction of James's home. The same man whose arrival had turned an ordinary evening into a nightmare. The same man whose face had appeared in every one of James's nightmares since the massacre. Their eyes met across an impossible distance. James felt his chest tighten. Hatred surged through him with such intensity that it nearly drowned out every other emotion.

His parents were dead. His home was gone. His entire life had been reduced to ashes. And the man responsible was standing there. Watching him.Waiting.The desire for revenge burned so fiercely that James almost forgot everything else.

For a brief moment, he wanted nothing more than to charge forward. To kill.To destroy. To make someone pay. Then a hand landed on his shoulder.Vaelor.The old mage did not need to speak. The simple gesture reminded James of a painful truth.

He was not strong enough. Not yet. The realisation felt like swallowing broken glass. His hatred remained. His grief remained. But neither changed reality. If he attacked now, he would die. The Hollow Legion commander would barely consider him a threat.

That truth hurt more than any wound."The barriers are failing," the glowing-eyed boy whispered. His voice shook noticeably. James turned toward him. The younger boy's eyes glowed brighter than before. Streams of blood trickled from his nose.  His body trembled violently. It looked as though simply observing the approaching army came at a painful cost."What do you see?" Vaelor asked.

The old mage's tone remained calm, but James detected tension beneath it. The boy swallowed hard."They didn't force their way here."His voice dropped."They followed something."The statement immediately captured everyone's attention."What do you mean?" the swordswoman asked. The boy's gaze slowly shifted toward James.

An uncomfortable silence followed. James immediately understood. Or at least, he thought he did. The creature. The shadow.Whatever had emerged from within him. The possibility made his stomach tighten. Vaelor's expression darkened."The entity."

The boy nodded."It left a trail."Nobody spoke for several seconds. The implications were obvious. Something ancient had attached itself to James.Something powerful enough to expose a sanctuary hidden from the world for centuries. The realisation made guilt creep into his chest. People had already died because of him. Now, more lives were in danger.

The thought threatened to suffocate him. Before anyone could continue the discussion, laughter echoed across the platform. The chained shadow creature smiled. Golden  restraints still wrapped around its body, but the creature appeared completely unconcerned."How wonderfully ironic."

Its crimson eyes gleamed."The last heir finally arrives, and within two days, he nearly destroys the world's safest sanctuary."James clenched his fists. The creature annoyed him. Every word it spoke seemed designed to provoke. Yet part of him hated how often its observations proved accurate. Vaelor ignored the comment.

Instead, the archmage stepped toward the edge of the platform. The wind stirred his robes. Ancient power gathered around him. For the first time since James had met him, the old mage looked every bit the legendary figure spoken of in myths.

The air itself seemed to bend around him. The floating islands overhead altered their positions. The clouds shifted. Reality adjusted. It  was as though the world recognised his authority."Prepare the sanctuary."His voice echoed across the mountain.

Instantly, countless runes ignited throughout the surrounding structures. Massive towers awakened. Ancient defensive arrays activated. The entire sanctuary began transforming into a fortress. James watched in stunned silence. He had never imagined magic on such a scale. The mountain itself seemed alive. Golden rivers of energy flowed through the stone.

Entire sections of the sanctuary rearranged themselves. Walls emerged from the ground. Bridges folded inward. Protective barriers spread across the sky. The sheer complexity was overwhelming. And yet, despite the impressive display, Vaelor did not look reassured. If anything, he appeared more concerned.

James noticed immediately. The realisation frightened him. If someone as powerful as Vaelor looked worried, then the situation was far worse than it appeared. The giant warrior stepped beside James. Up close, the man looked even larger than before. Scars covered his arms.

His armour appeared worn from countless battles. Yet there was warmth in his eyes. A surprising kindness."You're thinking about charging down there, aren't you?"James glanced at him. The giant smiled knowingly."I've seen that look before."James looked away. The answer was obvious. The  giant sighed."My name is Darius, by the way."

The introduction caught James off guard. The timing seemed strange. An army was approaching. A battle might begin at any moment. Yet Darius acted as though they were meeting at a tavern."I'm James."I know."A grin spread across the warrior's face."Everyone knows."The comment almost earned a smile.Almost.Darius's expression softened."You don't need to carry everything alone."

The words struck harder than expected. James immediately thought about his parents. About the bloodline.About the prison.About the shadow attached to him. Every new revelation seemed to add another burden. Another responsibility.Another reason to feel overwhelmed. Yet before he could respond, a new voice interrupted. The swordswoman."Touching conversation."

Her arms remained crossed."But we have bigger problems."Darius rolled his eyes."You always ruin emotional moments."

The woman ignored him. Instead, she focused on James."My name is Lyra."Her sharp gaze examined him carefully."Since we're apparently risking our lives together, introductions seem appropriate."The corner of James's mouth twitched. For the first time since arriving, the group felt slightly more real. Less like strangers.More like people.Potential allies.Potential friends.

The realisation felt strange. Part of him resisted it. Accepting new people somehow felt like betraying those he had lost. a Yet another part of him desperately needed connection. Needed something beyond grief.Needed a reason to keep moving forward. That internal conflict lingered quietly inside him.

A painful reminder that healing would not happen overnight. Suddenly, the mountain shook. A deep vibration spread through the sanctuary. Everyone turned toward the horizon.

The Hollow Legion had stopped advancing. The massive army now stood motionless beyond the outer barriers. The commander carrying the black spear stepped forward alone. The sight immediately raised alarm. Something was wrong. James could feel it. The commander slowly lifted one hand. Dark energy gathered around his fingers.

Then he pressed his palm against empty air. Reality cracked. A spiderweb of fractures spread across the sky. Gasps echoed throughout the platform. Even Vaelor's eyes widened slightly. The barriers weren't merely being attacked. They were being unravelled. The commander wasn't using brute force.

He understood how the sanctuary functioned. That realisation sent chills through everyone present."Impossible," Lyra whispered. The glowing-eyed boy looked horrified."He knows the structure."Vaelor's expression became grim.

James immediately recognised the significance. Someone had betrayed them. The thought arrived with brutal clarity. The sanctuary's existence was supposed to be secret. Its defences were supposed to be unknown. Yet the Hollow Legion commander possessed knowledge he should never have acquired.

A traitor existed somewhere. The possibility created instant tension. Nobody wanted to voice it aloud. Yet everyone was thinking the same thing. Then the chained shadow creature laughed. The sound carried genuine amusement."You finally noticed."

Every eye turned toward it. The creature smiled."There has always been a traitor."The statement hit like a hammer. James felt his pulse quicken."What are you talking about?"

The creature tilted its head. Its smile widened."The prison."A cold breeze swept across the platform."The bloodline."Its crimson eyes narrowed."The Hollow Legion."The creature chuckled softly."They are all connected by the same lie."

James's heartbeat accelerated. Another mystery.Another revelation.Another fragment of a larger truth."What lie?"

The creature's smile vanished. For the first time, genuine seriousness entered its expression."The Forgotten God was never your enemy."The mountain fell silent. Even the wind seemed to pause. Nobody moved. Nobody spoke.

The statement felt absurd.Impossible.Yet the conviction in the creature's voice made dismissal difficult. Before anyone could respond, a deafening crack echoed across the sky. Everyone looked upward. The outer barrier had broken.

A massive fracture spread across the sanctuary's defences. Golden light poured from the wound. The Hollow Legion began advancing once more. Thousands of soldiers moved simultaneously. The sight resembled a dark ocean swallowing the horizon. Vaelor's eyes hardened. At last, the old mage turned toward James. What he said next changed everything."The commander isn't here for the sanctuary."

James frowned."What?"Vaelor looked directly into his eyes. A heavy silence followed. Then the archmage delivered a revelation that made James's blood run cold."He's here for your memories."James froze."My memories?"

Vaelor nodded."The Echo Bloodline contains more than ancestral knowledge."The old mage's voice dropped."It contains a key."

A terrible feeling settled inside James's chest."The key to what?"Vaelor's answer came immediately."The final seal."The words struck like thunder. Suddenly, countless pieces began aligning. The massacre. The bloodline. The prison. The pursuit. The relentless hunt.

They had never been chasing his family because of revenge. They had never been hunting survivors out of fear. They wanted access to something hidden inside the bloodline itself. Something  James had not even discovered yet. The realisation terrified him. Because if the commander truly wanted that key...then James himself might be the greatest threat to the world.

Before he could process the implication, another explosion rocked the sanctuary. This time, the sound came from inside the mountain. Not outside.Inside.Every face turned pale. Vaelor moved first. The archmage's eyes widened. For the first time since meeting him, James saw genuine shock."The lower vaults."

Darius immediately reached for his weapon. Lyra cursed. The glowing-eyed boy staggered backwards. Only the shadow creature continued smiling. As though it had expected this all along. Then a second explosion echoed from deep beneath the sanctuary.

And a voice boomed through the mountain. A voice nobody recognised.A voice that should not have existed inside their defences."Open the prison."The command echoed through stone, sky, and soul alike. James felt the blood drain from his face.

Because somehow...while everyone had been watching the enemy outside...something far worse had already gotten in.

Terribly wrong."Father?"James turned toward the stone courtyard where his father stood near the fountain.
