The sound of shattering chains still echoed in the abyss. Aurora knelt on the burning stone floor, her hands cut and bleeding, her breath ragged.

She clutched at the broken links that slipped through her fingers like dust. Her eyes were wide, staring at the empty space where Mason had been. He was gone. “No,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “No, no, no.”

Her throat tightened. Her chest felt like it was tearing apart. She had held him. She had touched his hand. And then, he vanished.

Her scream ripped through the void, raw and broken. “Mason!”

The abyss answered with silence. Only the faint rattle of chains and the drip of her tears hitting the stone, then the silence broke.

Vazquez’s laughter rose again, deep and cruel, echoing through every crack of the void. Aurora’s body shook. She turned her head slowly, her eyes burning with fury.
