“Please have a seat.” The man with the thin mustache pulled out a chair and opened the folder he was carrying as he invited the person across from him to sit down.
Inside the conference room, Fire Department Chief Page tried to remain calm as he faced an inquiry by the Public Safety Committee.
Seated next to the man with the thin moustache were the other committee members, who had begun to look up from the reports in their hands and were now staring at him.
The man with the thin mustache then cleared his throat, signaling that he had finished reading. His eyes lifted calmly toward Page. “Mr. Page, based on the investigation we’ve conducted, there are many factors that have been overlooked in our report this time.”
The investigators exchanged glances. Then one of them began to display his screen. “Here we found evidence that much of the firefighting equipment in Vendric County is in poor condition.”
The man pointed to several photos of evidence consisting of fire extinguishers: brittle hoses, clogged nozzles, jammed safety pins, rusty cylinders, and clumped, expired powder and foam.
In addition, fire alarm sensors were damaged and wires were severed. Hoses were leaking or moldy, and valves were rusted and jammed.
Their gazes sharpened. “Leaving them in this condition is a form of neglect of state tax funds.”
They saw that Page remained silent, tension evident on his face, but they were not intimidated in the least.
One of them continued. “Furthermore, you need to explain why there are gaps in the maintenance of the SCBA units.”
“Equally important, as the head of the Fire Department, you also need to explain why the plan to close Station 17 was never announced to the public?” The man with a thin mustache who was leading the investigation pressed him coldly.
Sweat drenched Page’s face. He swallowed hard, then wiped the sweat away.
He knew that if the department failed to secure the five million dollar matching funds that very day, the state government’s emergency wildfire grant would be forfeited.
Station 17 would be lost, and Page himself would be used as a scapegoat.
He looked at them amid the pressure. “We’ve maintained the equipment as best we could, but due to budget constraints from departmental cuts, we’ve kept the existing equipment as long as possible and maximized its use,” he argued.
The investigators weren’t immediately convinced, but they remained calm.
“One thing I can assure you is that we will keep Station 17—”
“Under these circumstances, how can you claim you’ll keep Station 17 open?” the man with the thin mustache cut Page off.
Page clenched his trembling fist. “We’ve found a way. Jacob West has agreed to donate five million dollars through a private foundation. We’ll use those funds to keep Station 17 open.”
He began to smile, confident that they believed him. Then he continued, “Meanwhile, the department will handle Derek Moss, the firefighter responsible for the incident.”
The committee members looked surprised. “Derek Moss?” The man with the thin mustache narrowed his eyes. “Isn’t Derek the firefighter who saved Jacob?”
Page’s eyes darted around frantically. “According to Captain Christian’s report, Derek acted recklessly on his own initiative, disobeyed orders, and worsened the condition of the man he rescued.”
Reportedly, Jacob was willing to donate as a token of appreciation for Derek’s efforts to save him, but only on the condition that Derek be fired from his job—that was what Christian had said, and Page understood.
Seeing them listening intently and looking sceptical, he nervously continued, “Jacob’s side demands a well-run institution. He wants discipline strictly enforced, and this is how we prove it.” Page framed the situation in a more favorable light.
Just then, Page’s assistant entered the room. “Sir, I’d like to inform you that representatives from the West Foundation have arrived.”
Page nodded. “All right, bring Derek into the conference room as well.”
He wanted to fire Derek in front of the foundation’s representatives to convince them.
Everyone entered the room, including Christian and Zack, who openly showed their delight at the prospect of seeing Derek lose his job.
Before the committee, Page fixed his gaze on Derek, who stood calmly before them. Taking control of the conference, he directed his attention squarely at Derek.
“Mr. Derek, do you admit that you disobeyed orders?”
It was not a question asked with uncertainty. The tone of his voice made it clear that he had already judged Derek guilty.
Derek met his gaze calmly. “I do not.” He slowly swept his eyes across everyone present. “As a firefighter, I acted in accordance with the established procedures under the emergency conditions that existed at the time.”
Page refused to listen. “Taking action without careful judgment and proper assessment constitutes negligence, Derek!” he declared loudly.
“Saving the victim was the judgment I made after assessing the situation—”
“You put the victim in the hospital because of your recklessness. Therefore, you are dismissed.” Page cut him off before he could finish speaking.
He then turned toward Victor with a courteous smile. “As you requested, sir, we have upheld strict discipline and proper regulations within this department. I hope the donation you promised can now be released.”
With obvious eagerness, Page handed a pen to Victor, expecting him to sign the donation transfer documents immediately.
But, Victor turned away from him. With utmost respect, he offered the pen to Derek instead. “Young Master, Mr. West has given clear instructions. The five-million-dollar emergency wildfire relief donation to Vendric County can only be released with your personal signature.”
Victor's words plunged the entire room into stunned silence.

You still love me, right?
“Sir, let me take Miss home.” Kitty, feeling awkward, offered to take over caring for Erin.Kitty knew what had happened between Erin and Derek; she understood Derek’s position of not wanting to deal with Erin anymore. Because of that, she tried to take the initiative.Derek turned toward her. The woman was also injured; letting her carry Erin would only make matters more complicated for him later. He then scanned the parking area. “You came in your car, right?”Kitty nodded. “Yes, I didn’t drink. So I can drive.”Derek nodded. “Just wait at St. Louie Hospital. I’ll take Erin there, and I’ll leave the rest to you.”Kitty agreed and hurriedly headed to her car. She moved first, while Derek only started his car after ensuring Erin was seated safely in her place. In the middle of the trip, Erin began to stir. She turned and realized Derek was still there and began to speak, “I knew you would come, Derek.” She smiled toward the man.Derek glanced at her briefly, acknowledging the sound of
Misunderstanding
“Derek, why did you take so long…” Before Erin could finish, she lost consciousness and fainted.Derek stared at her coldly. He wasn't sure what he felt seeing Erin in such a dishevelled state. But clearly, the woman’s destruction didn't make him feel okay either; seeing her smooth, beautiful face bruised made him feel sympathetic. He brushed the scarred man’s hand away roughly, sending the man stumbling back. From behind, Kitty ran quickly to approach them, standing not far from Derek. She looked at Erin, crying in guilt. “Miss, Miss, please forgive me for being late.” She knelt there in regret.Kitty was quite sincere toward Erin; Derek knew that. He let out a soft sigh as he watched the woman blame herself for Erin’s madness. He knew Kitty would obey whatever Erin ordered, and it was clear that this situation wasn't her fault. He noticed Kitty’s face and hands were also injured, which only fueled his fury further.“What exactly did you people do?” Derek asked Kitty coldly.Kitty lo
Saving her again
“Come on, honey, come with us.” The two men led Erin further inside, navigating through corridors Erin had never visited before. They brought her into a private room and locked it. Inside, they laid her down on the bed; her body writhed slowly as she moved her hands to feel the surface of the mattress, then felt safe and comfortable.Meanwhile, the two men stood before her, watching the scene with passionate gazes. “She really has such beautiful curves.” They watched as she lay on her side. The curves of her side formed a shape exactly like a Spanish guitar: a deep, narrow waistline, wide hips, and well-formed, firm buttocks of just the right size. The men grew wilder as they looked at her body, even peering into the gap of Erin’s open dress. “Undressing her would certainly be an incredible pleasure.”The man with the sinister-looking scar on his face nodded in agreement. “I feel like I want to bury my face right between her breasts. It’s such a shame if we just watch her without doin
Trap on trap
“Okay, we need to rest, guys.” Erin rose from her seat. Her disappointment at Derek’s reaction made her lose focus. She returned to the bar table, leaving the men who were hungry for her body staring in disappointment. Her hands clenched tightly as her eyes continued to read the words on Derek’s reply screen. Her face sharpened, and her eyes burned with rage. “So, you think you can just dump me like that?”She stared at the glass in front of her, grabbed it, and downed it in one gulp. “Pour another.” She demanded of the bartender.Seeing this, Dick, who was slowly sobering up, took the glass from her. “Slow down. Let’s just enjoy the party; no need to rush.”Erin didn’t care; she snatched the glass back and drank again. After her first plan failed, Erin shifted to another. She intended to do something extreme. She wanted to destroy herself as a way to punish Derek and prove that it was he who had pushed her to the brink of ruin.Dick smiled. On the surface, he told Erin to slow down.
Black dress trap
“Who does he think he is, daring to act like that toward me!” Erin slammed her bedroom door shut with a violent force.Because of Derek’s demand for a divorce, Erin became enraged and left the hospital that very second. She could not accept Derek’s attitude toward her, yet she also refused to let him go.The woman threw herself onto the bed, her hands clenching the bedsheets tightly, her face flushed with fury. “Derek, you will never slip through my fingers. You will be mine forever until the day I decide to let you go.”She believed she knew Derek inside and out. She knew what kind of man he was, and she knew that, fundamentally, he was a good person. Therefore, she needed to do something to win the sympathy and attention of that "good man," and she was certain it would be easy. She then got up and immediately began formulating a plan. “Dick, let’s party tonight.” She contacted the man and hung up the phone as soon as she heard his affirmation on the other end.A smile spread across
His final decision.
“Are you awake?” Fae entered the room where Derek was being treated. The room hardly resembled a hospital; it looked more like a luxury suite in a grand mansion. Thanks to the West family’s wealth, Derek could enjoy such comforts without having to ask; luxury, control, and convenience had now become standard for him.Derek glanced toward the door to welcome her. “I believe I’ve been asleep for quite a while.” He didn't remember exactly what had happened the previous night, at least not until he heard the explanation from Victor and the attending physician while Fae was away. From Victor, he heard that Fae had been frantic, shouting loudly and demanding that Derek be rushed to the hospital for serious care. Fae had waited by his side all night and only returned home that morning to change, promising to come back to check on him.Hearing that, Derek felt touched and found himself unconsciously longing to see her again.Brett might have lied about the true severity of Derek’s condition,
