Chapter 1 - A Glass of Ice
Eleanor Whitfield walked into the sitting room and poured a full glass of ice water over Daniel Reyes while he was asleep on the couch. The freezing water and ice cubes hit his face hard. Daniel jumped awake with a sharp gasp. Ice cubes fell onto the floor. Cold water soaked his shirt and ran down his neck. He sat up fast, blinking water from his eyes. He was confused and embarrassed. Eleanor stood over him with the empty glass in her hand. She didn't ask if he was alright. “Fully awake?” She asked. “Now that you are awake, guests sleep in bedrooms,” she said in a cold voice. “Not on my couch. You are neither a guest nor family in this house. If you want to stay under my roof, remember your place.” Daniel wiped water from his face with his wet sleeve. His voice was calm and respectful. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to fall asleep here. We got home very late. I was too tired to drive back.” Richard Whitfield walked in from the hallway. He didn't shout either. His voice was so calm. “I warned Claire not to marry a man who could not give her the life she deserved,” Richard said as he looked at Daniel’s wet clothes and shakes his head. “Even the servants have more value in this house. At least they earn their keep.” Claire rushed downstairs. She had heard the voices. She stopped when she saw Daniel soaked with ice water. Her eyes went wide. “Mom! Dad! What are you doing? That’s enough!” Eleanor turned her head slowly and gave Claire a hard look. The look was enough to explain the disgust she felt. “You chose this marriage against our wishes,” Eleanor said. “Do not raise your voice in my house.” Claire’s mouth went shut. The courage left her face. She looked at the floor. Daniel stood up. Water was still dripping from his clothes onto the expensive rug. He did not get angry. He did not raise his voice. “I’m truly sorry,” he only said again. “I never meant to disrespect anyone.” Eleanor set the empty glass on the table with a soft click. “Your apologies are useless,” she said. “Since you are already awake, make yourself useful. Make sure you wash Richard’s car before breakfast. It is dirty.” Daniel hesitated for only one second. He knows this is wrong. He knows he should refuse. But he looks at Claire. Claire looks back at him. Tears fill her eyes. Her lips part, but no words come out. Daniel swallowed his pride. He nodded once. “Yes ma'am.” Two maids stood near the doorway. The gardener stood a little farther back. They all saw everything. Their faces show discomfort. Everyone knows Daniel is the son-in-law of the house. Yet he is being treated like a servant. One young maid steps closer when Eleanor turned away. She whispers so softly only Daniel can hear. “I’m sorry, sir.” Then she walked away fast before Eleanor could notice. Daniel went to the utility room. He picked up a bucket, a sponge, and a hose. He walked outside without another word. The morning air was cool at first, but the sun was already rising. His clothes were still wet from the ice water. The wet fabric stuck to his skin and still felt cold against the growing heat. He filled the bucket with water and soap. He started washing Richard’s luxurious black car. He worked carefully, and did not want to leave any marks. He scrubbed the doors, and the wheels. Until sweat started mixing with the water on his face. His arms started aching, but he kept going. Claire stood just inside the front door, watching through the glass. Her hands were clenched tight. She wanted to open the door and stop this. She wanted to tell her parents that they were wrong. But every time she takes a step forward, fear pulling her back. Inside the house, Eleanor sat down with her coffee. Richard was reading the morning paper. “He is still out there,” Claire says in a small voice. Eleanor didn't look up. “Good. Maybe he will finally learn what hard work looks like.” “Mom, please. He’s my husband.” Richard turns a page slowly. “A husband who cannot support his wife has no right to complain about work.” Claire’s eyes filled with more tears, opens her mouth again. Then she closes it. She walks to the window and watches Daniel in silence. Outside, Daniel finishes the car. The black paint shined under the sun. He stepped back and looked at his work. It was clean. Every part was clean. Eleanor walked outside. She did not hurry. She walked slowly, like she had all the time in the world. She stopped beside the car. She rubbed one finger across the hood. She looked at her finger. Then she looked at Daniel. “You missed a spot,” she said in a calm voice. “Wash it again.” Daniel knew there was no dirt. The car is perfect. He could see his own reflection in the paint. But he knew arguing will only make things worse for Claire. He slowly picked up the sponge again. Before he dipped it into the bucket, he looked toward the front door. Claire was standing there. For one small moment, Daniel hoped she will finally walk over. He hoped she will take the bucket from his hands. He hoped she will tell her parents the words he needs to hear. Enough! He’s my husband. Claire opens her mouth. But no words come out. Instead she lowers her head. Her shoulders shook a little. Daniel understood. Without saying anything, he bent down. He dipped the sponge back into the soapy water. And he started washing the same clean car again. The sponge moved over the hood in slow circles. Water dripped onto the drive way. The sun grew hotter on his back. His wet shirt clung on him. His hands were already sore. Claire stood in the doorway and watched as the man she loves lost a little more of his dignity.
