Chapter 008

One of the cat's paws seemed deformed, but I could not see anything else that wasn't right with it. Though, I had no idea whether it had any internal injuries or not.

"Hey little guy, are you alright?"

I prodded the little cat. Its lustrous fur, a mixture of yellow and white, was extremely beautiful. As I prodded it, the cat looked at me weakly, but then it shut its eyes and stopped moving.

"It's not dead, is it?"

I reached out a finger to test the cat's breath as I spoke, then I touched its chest to test for a heartbeat. Fortunately, it was still alive. It must be feeling weak right now. It needed rest.

Since no one was around, I pulled up the cat's leg out of curiosity and looked between.

The cat yowled at me and kicked its legs free, blocking its sensitive parts like a form of protest.

"Oh, you're female? Sorry sorry, I didn't mean anything by it!"

After some thought, I decided to bring the cat along with me. Since I saved it, I might as well go all the way and take care of it, too. Thinking about it, I was worried I'd feel lonely on the trip, so having this little kitty around would be good to keep me company.

"Hey little guy, my name's Leon. From now on, you're gonna be my little kitty!"

Whether it heard me or not, I brought it along with me on my journey to Rowe Academy. When I passed through a small town, I had a priest treat the cat's injury while I replenished my energy with some food. I also bought some milk and dried meat for it.

The priest said that even though the cat's injuries were quite severe, its internal organs were safe. He told me that I had saved it in time, and it only needed some time to recover, so I need not worry.

I took it out from my bag and set it down lightly on the ground. Then, I fed it some milk in hopes that it would wake up soon.

Two days passed after that. While I was on the road, I felt something rustling in my bag. It had woken up. Putting my bag down, I brought it gently into my arms.

"Meow."

After meowing a few times, it nuzzled my arm with its head, as if thanking me.

"Hey little guy, finally awake? Here, you should eat something."

I fed it a piece of dried meat. I did not expect it to scarf it down so quickly and began meowing at me again for another piece.

"A little glutton, are you? Here, you can have the whole thing."

It had been sleeping this whole time, so I had ended up enjoying the dried meat myself. Not much of it was left now. Meowing, the cat ate it up with glee.

Dusk was gradually descending, but we were still around the outskirts. As I made the decision to find a place to sleep in the wilderness, I saw a small firelight in the distance.

"I think there's a home in front of us. Great! We can just ask if they can take us in for the night. At the very least, it'll be much nicer than sleeping out here in the woods."

I spoke happily to the cat and received a couple meows of agreement for it in response. So, I quickened my pace toward the building.

The light did not seem too far off, but since we were on a winding road, I had to walk for quite a while before I got close. Taking a closer look, it turned out to be an inn. The signboard read, "Dragon King Tavern".

"Look! There's an inn here! Seems like we're in luck, and in good hands for a good night's sleep." However, the usually lively little cat turned silent. I could not help but frown at it, only to see its head darting left and right, and sniffing the air occasionally.

"What's wrong, little guy? Don't like it here?"

"Meow meow meow..."

Though I could not understand it, I could tell from its expression that it hated this place. Maybe it was just too tired, I thought, not taking it to heart.

"Once we get a room, I'll get you something nice to eat. Then, we can rest."

After saying that, I strode into the inn, completely oblivious to the cat's frowning expression at that moment.
