Rufus looked down at the trembling mutant bleeding against the wall.

"I am the one that is going to rid the world of this curse," he replied.

Something flashed in his eyes as he said it. Not anger or pain or the hollow emptiness that had been eating him alive since he found Mia in another man's arms.

Something that had no name yet but felt like power.

The mutant saw it and trembled with so much fear, unlike anything that it had seen before.

The creature had spent years being the thing that made humans scream and run. It had never been on the other side of that terror. It had never felt small and weak and completely helpless.

Until now.

"The leaders," it muttered, its voice shaking badly.

"The leaders have to know about you. You are trouble. You are something that should not exist. They need to know before you become..."

Before he could finish, Rufus moved fast and delivered one final strike that crushed what was left of the mutant's skull against the broken tiles. The creature went still instantly, its living eye finally closing.

Rufus stood over the body for a moment, wiping the dark blood from his knuckles.

"I will be waiting for these so-called leaders," he muttered.

He took one last look around the room that had almost been his grave. The scattered zombie bodies, the blood on the walls, the empty space where Mia and Julius had stood before they ran like cowards.

Then he stepped outside.

Meanwhile, the moment he walked into the corridor, he could feel a strange knowing and power rising deep within him.

Every step felt different. His body moved like it had been upgraded overnight and his senses picked up sounds from floors away, smells from the street below, the faint heartbeats of survivors hiding in the rubble.

The power was real and it was his and it was growing.

He wanted to discover more about himself and what he was capable of. He wanted to understand where this ability had come from and why it had chosen now to wake up.

More than anything, he wanted to know more about his family and the ring that his mother had given him.

His fingers moved to the ring automatically, turning it slowly on his finger. His mother had pressed it into his palm like she knew something she would never have time to explain. She had told him to keep it on at all times, no matter what happened.

Now he was beginning to understand why.

He was so lost in thoughts that he did not realize when he bumped into someone.

The impact knocked him off balance and he looked up to see who he had run into.

It was a girl that had been crying.

Even with tears streaking down her face and dust in her hair, she was stunning. Her skin was like milk, smooth and pale against the grey light of the ruined city. Her curves and her shape were irresistible, the kind that made men forget what they were thinking about.

She was with an old man who seemed to be her father. He leaned heavily against a piece of broken concrete, his was breathing short and labored.

When Rufus looked closely at the old man, his new senses immediately picked up the details.

The man had been beaten recently. His skin was pale and gradually turning black around the bite marks on his arm. His breathing was heavy and came in painful gasps.

These were all signs that he was already turning.

When their eyes jammed, her eyes flickered with hope for just a second. Like she had been expecting someone to come around that corner, someone who could help.

Then she actually saw Rufus and her gaze fell.

She took in his torn, bloody wedding suit, his battered appearance, and worse, the wild look in his eyes.

To her, he probably looked like every other scavenger that roamed the ruins during rampages.

She growled with irritation seeing how he looked, thinking that he was another scavenger.

"Great," she muttered under her breath. "Another vulture looking to pick through the dead."

She adjusted her grip on the old man and tried to move past Rufus, clearly deciding he was not worth her time.

Then a flood of information came rushing through Rufus's mind seeing the old man's wound. It was not just medical knowledge. It was like a detailed map of what was happening inside the man's body, how the virus was spreading, where it had reached and where it had not.

"I can help him, your father!" Rufus didn't realize when these words sizzle off his lips with so much confidence even before he could stop them

And for the first time, the heiress turned with their gaze interlocking.

Tina, raised her brows in rasped mockery, pretending she did not hear what he said whereas she did.

What he said just sounded like what could come out only from a mad man as everyone knew that this was impossible. Nobody came back from zombie bites. Nobody stopped the turning once it started.

She looked him up and down with complete disbelief and rage hidden right under her gaze and twisted into heightened irritation.

"What did you say?" Her voice dripped with so much sarcasm when she finally spoke.

"Because I thought I heard you say you can help my father. Maybe the Apocalypse finally made me lose my hearing too."

Rufus met her gaze steadily.

"I said I can help him not to turn!"

At first, there was silence in the room, then Tina lets out a short, bitter laugh.

"Are you insane? Do you think this is the time for jokes? Look at him. He has been bitten and he is changing. There is nothing anyone can do now except put him out of his misery."

Rufus did not flinch at her words. The information was still flowing through his mind, showing him exactly how far the virus had spread and telling him it was not too late.

"He has not fully turned yet," he said quietly. "The virus has not reached his brain. That is why I can still help him."

Tina stared at him, her hand moving to the knife on her belt. She was torn between calling him crazy and grasping at the tiny hope hidden in his words.

"You are lying," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Nobody can stop the turning. Even the government doctors could not find a cure after three years."

"I am not a government doctor," Rufus replied calmly. "And I do not need a laboratory."

He looked at the black veins creeping up the old man's neck.

"But if we stand here arguing much longer, the virus will cross into his brain. Then there really will be nothing I can do."

Tina looked down at her father, hearing his rattling breaths getting weaker. The black lines were spreading higher, painting a picture of the monster he was about to become.

She looked back at Rufus, searching his eyes for lies or madness.

She found neither. Just a strange certainty that made no sense in this broken world.

For a brief moment, it seemed like she actually believed Rufus, or she wanted to, then she scowled.

"What dirty tricks are you really trying to play here beggar?" She sneered.

CHAPTER NINETY-SIX Rufus nodded in satisfaction, and a snicker left his mouth while he glanced at Malcolm who almost shed tears.“I thought the bank belonged to him!”“Yes! That’s what he told us!” Malcolm’s friends whispered amongst themselves, their eyes looked at him with so much shock. “This is such a wonderful news, Damian! Who would have thought that the bank belonged to us?” Rufus chuckled softly, giving Damian more reasons to ask the questions that harbored his curiosity. “What has he done, Lord Rufus? Has he offended you?” The Butler looked at Malcolm who gestured to him to plead on his behalf.“He has, Damian. His son insulted me and my friend earlier today, and tonight again, I encountered him.” “I am so sorry, Lord Rufus! My son was very foolish for whatever he did to you at the store! He is going to apologize right away!” Malcolm stood up from his knees and grabbed Oliver whom he dragged closer to Rufus after giving him a slap, ignoring the grunts and blood that oozed

CHAPTER NINETY-FIVE Oliver’s shirt got stained with some of the blood that trickled down his face, but he failed to take cognizance of it because of his rage. With a strong determination to get back at Rufus, he rushed at him again, and grabbed his two legs, attempting to push him down. “What are you doing?” Rufus scoffed, looking down at Oliver who strained and grained futilely without being able to achieve anything. “Get off me.” Rufus got tired of watching Oliver waste his time. He sighed softly and grabbed him on his shoulders before pushing him to the ground effortlessly. He watched him stagger before he landed with his butt again, but that still wasn’t enough to deter him. “I can see that you are not tired, Oliver.” “I am not leaving without a fight! I will make sure that I get you before I back down!” “Even when the odds are against you? Rufus scoffed, looking at Oliver with a little surprise in his eyes. “You have stood in my way twice since today, you will pay! Come o

CHAPTER NINETY-FOUR Rufus looked at the man for a while, and following the thoughts that crept into his mind, he chuckled softly, shaking his head at once. “I still think we should leave this place, Rufus. I am sure we can find somewhere else to sit.” Noah said calmly, looking around in search of another place they could sit. He sighted an empty chair at the other end of the hall, and he sighed before returning his gaze to Rufus. “Over there, Rufus! I see an empty seat. We should go there right now, I can let you sit, I don’t mind standing.” Noah hoped that Rufus was going to agree to what he said, but his mind was already made up, and he refused to budge. “Why don’t you listen to your friend, boy! Leave that place, and find somewhere else to sit!”“No! That’s not gonna happen! If you want me to leave, then you are going to have to make me!” Rufus’s eyes glared at the man, sending cold shivers down his spine and those of his friends. They were dumbfounded, and looked at each other

CHAPTER NINETY-THREE Throughout the day, Noah couldn’t stop thinking about the events of the day. Even when they drove from the vicinity of the store back to the Castle, he couldn't stop staring at Rufus who didn’t even seem like he had spent so much money on a store. When it was finally time for the party, Noah put on the suit he picked from the store, and a pair of brown shoes also picked from the store. “These look nice on you, Noah,” Rufus said while Noah had to walk to the mirror to look at his reflection. “Wow! I can’t believe that this is me.” Noah gasped the moment he saw his reflection in the mirror. He had never dressed in such expensive attire, and he couldn't stop staring. “Come on, Noah. We are going to be late for the party.” Rufus said calmly after adjusting his blue-striped tie with both hands. He was clad in a fancy black suit just like Noah, but their designs were entirely different and spoke of luxury from different angles. As soon as they stepped out of the

CHAPTER NINETY-TWO The air in the room thickened with a lot of tension, and while Caroline was still trying to get a grip on herself, Noah nudged Rufus in an attempt to get his attention, but he refused to look at him while he kept his eyes on Oliver who was still fuming with so much anger inside him. “I really think we should leave this place, Rufus. This is getting out of hand.” Noah whispered to Rufus with a nervous tone, but he stood his ground. “Didn’t you hear me? I asked you to call your Manager! Do it now!”“Please, Mr. Garcia! You don’t need to do this, we can settle it amicably.” Caroline pleaded, but her plea landed on deaf ears. She looked at Rufus almost immediately, giving him gestures to leave, but he refused to listen to her. “If you do not call your Manager right now, I am going to write a bad review about this place, and I will make sure you lose your job! I swear!”“No, please! You don’t have to do that, Mr. Garcia! I will call him, I will call him!” “Yes! Go o

  • Chapter 91

CHAPTER NINETY-ONE Rufus took in a deep breath which he met out slowly in an attempt to get a grip on himself. The demeanor of the saleslady pissed him off greatly, and he tried as much as he could to stop himself from reacting. He looked at Noah, but he seemed to be unbothered about all of that while he occupied his eyes with admiring the suits in front of them. “These are really nice, Rufus! I have never worn a suit before, this is going to be my first time. I am super excited!”“Yeah, I guess.” Rufus managed to smile at Noah while he struggled with his anger. He looked toward the direction the saleslady had gone and saw that she was speaking to some other people with an excited smile on her face. From the look of things, they appeared rich, and she placed much value on them because of their appearance. “Who are those people?” Noah said when he realized that Rufus had been staring at them with a smirk on his face. “Why would she keep us standing for so long? That’s unprofessiona
