"There’s nothing left to go back to, Jesse."

Lyra’s voice was hollow, stripped of all authority, as she stood at the edge of the jagged mountain ridge. Below them, the valley that had once held Oakhaven was a staggering basin of churning gray ash and glowing crimson craters.

"Don't you dare say that!" Jesse screamed, their voice breaking violently into a ragged sob. They dragged Draven’s arm tighter over their shoulder, their knees buckling under his heavy, feverish weight. "They're down there!

"Three minutes until atmospheric entry!"Lyra’s scream tore through the screaming wind as the flight deck tilted forty degrees into a nose-dive, sending heavy brass tools and shattered glass sliding across the floor toward the front window."Draven, grab my hand!" Jesse shrieked, their voice cracking as they dug their boots into a brass floor seam, their fingers locking desperately around Draven's leather sleeve."I've got you!" Draven barked, his voice choked with soot and pure terror as he pulled Jesse close against his chest. "I'm not letting go!""The secondary defense grid is activating!" Kaelen yelled from behind a tilted console, his sword clattering against the metal as six spherical bronze drones dropped from the ceiling hatches, their red optical lenses spinning into life with a high-pitched, lethal whine. "They're blocking the ramp to the lower steering pedestal!""Get behind me!" Draven shouted, stepping in front of Jesse as his chrome arm flared into a blinding, white-hot

  • Ghost in the Machine

"Welcome home, children of the forge."The synthesized voice boomed from every speaker array, humming through the polished metal deck beneath their boots with a cold, mocking warmth. Inside the suspended glass sphere, the preserved brain flared with a violent, electric violet pulse that made the air smell sharply of ozone."You're not a man anymore, Vane!" Draven bellowed, stepping directly in front of Jesse, his heavy forge hammer raised as his silver arm flared white-hot against the darkness of the flight deck. "You're just a rotting brain in a jar of chemical soup!""A jar that controls thirty thousand tons of orbital kinetic fire, blacksmith," the voice laughed, vibrating through the dark glass walls with terrifying clarity. "Look at you two. Tethered together like two drowning rats holding onto the same sinking rock. Do you really think that little spark of silver is going to save you up here?""We survived your vanguard, Vane!" Jesse yelled, leaning around Draven's broad shoulde

  • Boarding The Eclipse

"We aren't just defending Oakhaven anymore... we're taking their sky."Draven rasped the words through a mouth still stained with blood, his voice carrying a lethal, unwavering edge that cut straight through the howling tempest. He stood braced against the split trunk of the golden tree, his flesh hand locked tightly in Jesse’s, their shared pulse throbbing in a synchronized, blinding beat of dual silver-gold light."Have you lost your mind, blacksmith?!" Lyra shrieked, her ancient voice cracking under the weight of sheer disbelief as she pointed her trembling copper needle at the sky. "Look up! The Eclipse is a flying fortress built to withstand orbital kinetic strikes! You can't just climb a mountain and hop aboard!""We aren't climbing the mountain, Lyra," Jesse spoke up, their voice carrying that surreal, resonant double-tone that made the air around their lips vibrate. They squeezed Draven's fingers, feeling every surge of adrenaline coursing through his veins as if it were their

  • The Eternal Tether

"If I do this, Jesse... we live as one, or we die together."Draven’s voice cracked down the middle, a rough, desperate gravelly sound that barely rose above the howling storm. He knelt in the deep mud beneath the split golden sapling, his knees dug deep into the wet stone as rain washed dark soot down his cheeks."Draven, please..." Jesse whimpered, their pale lips trembling, barely able to form the words. Their hand feebly clawed at Draven's leather sleeve, fingernails scraping uselessly against the wet hide. "Don't... don't bind yourself... to my dying...""Shut up," Draven choked out, dropping his forehead against Jesse's icy temple, weeping openly now. "Just shut up and let me save you, sweetheart. You think I want a life without you in it? You think I'm going to walk this ruined valley alone?""You have to live..." Jesse rasped, their breath coming in short, agonizing hitches that rattled in their chest. "You're the blacksmith... Oakhaven needs...""Oakhaven can burn to ground i

I can't catch the pulse!"Lyra’s scream cut straight through the roaring wind, her shaking hands pressing futilely against Jesse’s cold throat as rain poured over them in sheets."Get out of the way!" Draven barked, his voice cracking into an agonizing, desperate roar.He didn't wait for her to move. He scooped Jesse up into his arms, pulling their limp body tight against his chest while his silver arm flared hot against the freezing storm. Mud flew beneath his boots as he sprinted across the ruined plaza toward the shattered base of the golden tree, every step shaking his entire frame."Draven, slow down!" Lyra yelled, stumbling through the ash behind him, her wet robes heavy and dragging in the mud. "If you drop them on this stone, the kinetic shock will kill them!""I am not dropping them!" Draven wept, his teeth grinding so hard he could taste iron on his tongue. "Jesse! Sweetheart, hear me! Keep breathing for me!"Jesse’s head rolled back aga

  • The Anchor's Wrath

"Take your hands off him!"Jesse’s voice didn't just carry across the mud; it ripped through the freezing rain like a physical blade, tearing the air open with a sound so terrifyingly raw that every surviving heart in the valley stopped dead.Vane paused in his cockpit, his cold silver eyes flicking down toward the small, shaking figure standing twenty feet away in the slush. "What did you say to me, anchor child?""I said let him go!" Jesse shrieked, their throat tearing on the words.A blinding, impossible wave of golden fire erupted from Jesse's chest scar, bursting outward in a hundred-foot halo of pure, roaring light. The ground beneath their boots shattered. Huge chunks of frozen earth and jagged stone lifted off the valley floor, hovering weightless in mid-air as Jesse slowly rose into the sky, suspended by a column of raw, liquid sun."Jesse, no!" Draven choked out, his boots dangling helplessly in the iron claw as he fought for a single drop of air. "Don't do it... the feedba
