The rematch

Kael woke before dawn.

For a few seconds, he lay still, staring into the darkness of his room.

His body remembered yesterday.

His ribs were sore. His shoulder throbbed whenever he moved it, and there was a tender spot across his chest where Marek's final punch had sent him crashing onto the mat.

He sat up anyway.

No complaints.

No excuses.

He reached for his notebook.

Marek's name was still on the last page.

Strength-type System.

Normal attack: Right-handed power punch.

Preparation: Right foot turns outward.

Weakness: Left side opens during power attacks.

Then beneath it:

System Skill: Unknown.

Kael stared at those words.

That was where he had failed.

He had spent days learning Marek's normal movements, but he had only seen the System skill once.

One time was not enough.

He needed to understand it.

Kael stood.

“Again.”

By sunrise, he was running.

The streets around the training facility were almost empty.

Kael's breathing became heavier as he pushed himself through another lap.

His legs burned.

His lungs burned.

He kept going.

Marek's skill replayed inside his head.

The glow around his arms.

The sudden increase in speed.

The change in muscle tension.

The first punch.

Kael slowed.

He remembered something.

Marek hadn't activated the skill immediately.

There had been a brief pause.

Less than a second.

A tightening of his shoulders.

A shift in his breathing.

Then the System activated.

Kael stopped running.

His eyes narrowed.

“That pause…”

He turned around and ran back toward the facility.

The training hall was almost empty when Kael arrived.

Professor Elias Varen stood near the observation platform, reading something on a tablet.

He looked up.

“You're early.”

Kael walked toward him.

“Professor.”

Varen glanced at his bruised face.

“You challenged someone again.”

“Marek.”

“I know.”

Kael stopped.

“You watched?”

“I watch my students.”

Kael hesitated.

Then he asked, “How does a System skill actually activate?”

Varen lowered the tablet.

“That depends on the skill.”

“Does the user always have to think about activating it?”

“Usually.”

“Usually?”

“Some skills activate automatically. Others require a command, a gesture, a condition, or a specific trigger.”

Kael's eyes sharpened.

“And physical changes?”

Varen studied him.

“What about them?”

“Can they happen before activation?”

“Yes.”

Kael nodded.

“So if someone has a strength enhancement skill, their body might react before the System activates it.”

“Correct.”

Kael looked down at his notebook.

Varen watched him for a moment.

“You're planning another fight.”

“Yes.”

“You lost yesterday.”

“I know.”

“You may lose again.”

“I know.”

Varen sighed.

“Kael.”

Kael looked up.

“You don't have to prove something every time you enter this building.”

“I know.”

“Then why keep doing it?”

Kael's fingers tightened around his notebook.

“Because I'm not trying to prove I'm stronger than everyone.”

He paused.

“I'm trying to find out how strong I can become.”

Varen said nothing.

Kael turned away.

That was enough.

Marek arrived just before noon.

He spotted Kael immediately.

“You actually came back.”

Kael nodded.

“I said I would.”

Marek laughed.

“You're stubborn.”

“Probably.”

“You know I'm going to use my skill again.”

“I expect you to.”

Marek's smile faded slightly.

“Then you know how this ends.”

Kael stepped onto the mat.

“Not yet.”

Several students gathered.

Yesterday's fight had spread through the training hall.

The Systemless boy had challenged a System user.

He had lost.

But he'd landed a clean hit first.

Now he was back.

Nobody wanted to miss the rematch.

Professor Varen stepped between them.

“Same rules. No lethal techniques. Stop when one fighter can no longer continue.”

Marek nodded.

Kael raised his fists.

The bell rang.

Marek moved.

This time, Kael didn't retreat immediately.

He watched.

Marek's left foot.

His shoulders.

His breathing.

His hands.

Nothing.

Marek stepped forward.

Kael shifted backward.

The punch came.

Kael blocked.

Another.

He moved sideways.

Marek followed.

Kael threw a quick jab.

Marek knocked it away.

The fight was faster than yesterday.

But Kael wasn't chasing victory yet.

He was collecting information.

Marek threw a combination.

Right.

Left.

Right.

Kael slipped past the final strike.

Marek swung again.

Kael ducked.

Then he saw it.

The right foot turned outward.

The shoulders tightened.

His breathing stopped for a fraction of a second.

There.

Kael moved before Marek's System activated.

The glow appeared.

Marek's fist exploded forward.

But Kael wasn't where he expected.

The punch missed.

Marek's eyes widened.

Kael stepped inside.

Elbow to the chest.

Marek staggered.

Kael followed with a punch to the ribs.

Marek grunted.

The crowd erupted.

“Again!”

Kael didn't celebrate.

Marek recovered quickly.

His expression hardened.

“You figured it out.”

Kael said nothing.

Marek charged.

This time, he activated the skill earlier.

Kael noticed immediately.

His timing had changed.

Kael's eyes widened.

He adapted.

He moved.

But Marek was faster.

A punch clipped Kael's cheek.

Another struck his shoulder.

Kael stumbled.

Marek pressed forward.

Kael blocked.

The impact forced him backward.

One step.

Two.

Three.

His heel touched the edge of the mat.

Marek raised his fist.

Kael saw the familiar movement.

Right foot.

Shoulder.

Breath.

The activation was coming.

But this time, Kael didn't dodge.

He stepped forward.

Marek's eyes widened.

The skill activated.

His fist came toward Kael's face.

Kael twisted his head aside.

The punch grazed his cheek.

At the same moment, Kael drove his shoulder into Marek's chest.

Both of them stumbled.

Marek tried to recover.

Kael was already moving.

A short punch to the ribs.

Marek's breath caught.

Kael struck again.

Then again.

Marek staggered.

Kael remembered yesterday.

Left side opens during power attacks.

He waited.

Marek planted his right foot.

The opening appeared.

Kael stepped in.

His fist connected with Marek's left ribs.

Marek dropped to one knee.

The training hall went silent.

Kael stood over him, breathing heavily.

Marek tried to rise.

His arms shook.

He pushed himself up.

Kael raised his fists again.

Marek looked at him.

Then he laughed.

“You're unbelievable.”

He straightened.

“Again?”

Kael blinked.

“You're still standing.”

“So are you.”

Neither moved.

Then Professor Varen stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Marek lowered his hands.

Kael did the same.

Varen looked at Marek.

“You're finished.”

Marek nodded.

Then Varen turned to Kael.

“And you.”

Kael waited.

“You won.”

The words barely registered.

Kael looked at Marek.

The other boy gave him a tired smile.

“Congratulations.”

Kael exhaled slowly.

He had done it.

Not through strength.

Not through a rare ability.

Not because the System had suddenly appeared.

He had watched.

He had lost.

He had studied.

And he had adapted.

The crowd began whispering.

“He actually beat Marek.”

“But Marek used his skill.”

“I know.”

“How?”

Nobody had an answer.

Darius, standing near the back of the room, had watched the entire fight without saying a word.

His arms were folded across his chest.

His expression was unreadable.

Beside him, another student whispered, “He got lucky.”

Darius shook his head.

“No.”

The student looked at him.

“What?”

Darius kept his eyes on Kael.

“That wasn't luck.”

Later that evening, Kael sat alone on the roof of the training facility.

The city stretched beneath him.

Lights flickered across the skyline.

Above them, enormous System advertisements floated between buildings.

LEVEL UP YOUR LIFE.

AWAKEN YOUR POTENTIAL.

BECOME STRONGER. FASTER. BETTER.

Kael looked at them.

For the first time, those messages didn't make him feel small.

He opened his notebook.

Under Marek's name, he wrote:

Rematch: Victory.

Then:

Method: Study → Adapt → Exploit.

He paused.

His pen hovered over the page.

Then he added another sentence.

A System gives its user power. It doesn't decide how that power is used.

Kael leaned back.

That thought stayed with him.

Maybe Systems were powerful.

Maybe they gave people advantages he could never naturally match.

But every ability had a pattern.

Every pattern had limitations.

And every fighter made mistakes.

Kael closed the notebook.

Below him, the city continued moving.

Somewhere in that city, thousands of System users were becoming stronger.

Kael had no idea how he would catch them.

But now he had something he hadn't possessed a few weeks ago.

Proof.

A Systemless person could win.

Not easily.

Not quickly.

But it was possible.

And Kael intended to prove it again.

And again.

Until nobody laughed when they heard his name.
