“Mom, when will dad come?”

Sylvie placed a tired smile on her pale features and stared at her little 7 year old son.

She raised her hand and placed it on his curly brown hair.

“Soon little one, soon”

“Liar! He’s already dead”

A weak voice whispered from the side. Sylvie did not bother turning her head to know who the speaker was.

She pulled her sleepy son closer to her chest and said sharply in a low voice fearing attracting the attention of something.

“Gina how many times have I told you not to speak such nonsense”

“No you’re the one speaking nonsense, it’s been seven days, seven days...”

“Shh, Gina lower your voice”

“No I won’t, seven days and he still hasn’t come back, obviously he turned into one of those creatu...”

The echo of a loud slap rang through the room which contained only three people. Gina placed her hand over her cheek unable to believe that her mother had just slapped her. Her eyes filled with tears and they fell across her dusty face leaving trails behind.

Sylvie hugged her son tighter and said in a hoarse angry voice.

“Don’t you ever dare mention such a thing”

Her expression softened from anger to sadness then to regret for slapping her teenage daughter.

Just when she wanted to apologize, she froze in place in fear when the sound of the door creaking reached her ears followed by the barely noticeable sound of footsteps. She quickly said in a low voice.

“Gina!. Someone, something has entered inside”

Gina straightened in her seat and her body trembled slightly. Under the fear of those creatures she temporarily forgot her sadness over her mother hitting her.

She moved closer to her mother who wrapped her trembling arm around her thin body.

“Mom. Do you think it’s a zombie or... or a monster like that thing?!”

Sylvie opened her mouth to answer in order to reassure her frightened daughter’s heart but she was interrupted by the voice of a man who sounded as if he were talking to someone, but when she focused more she was able to hear the content of the speech and also a terrifying purring sound that made her body tremble.

Gina sensed it and asked worriedly.

“Mom. What is it?”

“There’s someone outside, a man and it seems something followed him inside. Gina try not to make any sound or we’re doomed”

At this moment the second child chose the worst possible time to sneeze, and out of fear Gina hurriedly placed her hand over her little brother’s face trying to suppress the sound.

Suddenly the sound of loud screaming echoed mixed between a human voice that sounded in pain and a strange inhuman sound that made the hair on Sylvie’s body stand up as a cold shiver passed through her body. All she could do was hold her children tighter and pray that whatever that person was would not discover them.

Suddenly silence fell unexpectedly for a moment before Sylvie heard the man’s voice again speaking. His voice sounded somewhat strange.

“Hey you... you there... save me, you are the reason for my predicament. Quickly close the door just don’t let the zombies enter or you too will be in danger...”

“...please”

Obviously she was not the only one who heard that voice.

“Hey what are you doing?”

She whispered reproachfully when she felt her eldest daughter slip out from her arms and crawl near the door placing her ear against it.

Then Sylvie’s eyes widened when she saw the shadow of her daughter in the darkness stand up and open the door and before she could say anything she had already left.

Sylvie could not understand what happened to her daughter to become this brave after she had been trembling in fear only moments ago.

She placed her little son who was awake at this time but showed maturity beyond his age and did not make any sound.

“My dear Luke your mother will return shortly, wait here for a moment. Okay?”

“Mhm”

Luke made a small sound expressing his agreement. Sylvie patted his head. Fortunately darkness dominated the place so her frightened facial expression did not show.

She grabbed the pistol placed at the side then exited the room. She remembered her husband sometimes explaining to her how to use a pistol.

Following his instructions she found the safety switch and disengaged it then tightened her grip on the pistol between her hands and cautiously walked outside.

But she quickly lost her composure when she saw dozens of red eyes that had followed her even into her dreams approaching the entrance of the building.

And because of a strange blue light Sylvie managed to locate Gina. Seeing her daughter trying to drag someone by his hands snapped her out of her panic. She quickly ran toward the door passing her daughter.

She forcefully shut the door then looked around for something to reinforce it. Fortunately there was a police baton in the corner. She quickly grabbed it and wedged it between the door handles.

She stepped back fearfully when one of the zombies slammed the door hard trying to break it.

“No at this rate they’ll break the door”

She muttered with a dark expression while pointing her pistol toward the door and at the same time retreating backward. When she reached her daughter’s side the blood in her veins froze when her gaze settled on the terrifying appearance of the strange monster which was the source of the blue light.

She noticed a bone protruding from the monster’s eye. She blinked several times in disbelief.

“Did this man manage to kill this thing with a bone?”

The loud banging coming from the door which threatened to collapse under the zombies’ strength outside pulled her out of it.

She put the pistol in her jacket pocket then grabbed the culprit who killed the monster by both his feet. Naturally she did not overlook the serious injury on his thigh but the time was not suitable for giving him first aid.

The mother and daughter carried Jack who fortunately was somewhat light perhaps due to not eating much food which had become something rare these days.

They placed him on the ground then Sylvie hurried toward a large table in the corner and called to her daughter who had closed the door.

“Gina help me here”

With great difficulty the two carried the table which was extremely heavy and placed it before the door as support in case the zombies managed to break the outer door.

When she finished dealing with the door Sylvie redirected her attention toward her eldest daughter. She approached her and raised her hand to slap her but stopped herself at the last moment.

She placed both hands on Gina’s shoulders and said reproachfully in a hoarse voice.

“Girl!, are you crazy?. What were you thinking?. How dare you endanger your life and your brother’s life and mine?”

“I...”

“You what? What...”

Sylvie released a long sigh.

“What happened happened. Help me now in giving this man first aid before he dies from blood loss”

  • chapter 17 : Smith POV : Level up

The last thing Smith felt was a heavy weight pressing down on his back and a pale hand with long nails filled with bits of flesh falling near his face, then his eyes rolled back and he lost consciousness.“Pathetic.”Eric lowered the automatic firearm, ignoring the sound of the system inside his mind, and looked at Julian who had just spoken, then sighed.“Well, the kid is indeed somewhat cowardly, but that’s normal. Eight days ago he was just an ordinary person. Surviving this long is already something worthy of praise.”Julian did not answer. He merely stared at Eric before shaking his head and turning toward Mandy, giving an order calmly.“Mandy. Wake the fat kid up and help him kill these things.”Mandy frowned and could not help but ask,“Boss, I don’t understand. Why do you want to help this fat pig level up?. His personality isn’t suited for fighting.”This time he did not turn to look at the giant woman beside him. He simply opened his mouth and said calmly, in complete contra

It consisted of five story apartment buildings connected to one another, forming a square, and in the middle there was a small garden that unfortunately had turned into charcoal after a fire broke out there at the beginning of the catastrophe eight days ago.The complex had only one entrance, a large gate with a smaller door built into the center of it.In front of the gate stood five guards armed with firearms. Some of them wore gear belonging to the police, perhaps they had been policemen... or perhaps they had stripped the equipment from the corpses of policemen.Smith could not help but cast a quick glance at the reason behind the order governing this residential complex.Julian, the terrifying gang leader... or the savior, as people here liked to call him.Eric quickly moved to Julian’s side and gave an order to the guards, or rather to one guard who was sitting relaxed on a plastic chair, and the man waved his hand toward the others.“Open the gate.”Smith raised his eyebrows in

Smith swallowed his saliva and lowered his head, avoiding eye contact with the frightening gang leader.“Smith. Tell me, did you prepare a list of what you need?”Smith sweated anxiously. In truth, he had not prepared any list. Wait, in fact he had not even told them he needed parts from outside, this was merely Julian’s idea that he forced onto him out of nowhere.Afraid Julian might kill him, he quickly turned the gears in his brain and soon opened his mouth, trying not to stutter.“I need the ma...”He stopped midway through his sentence when he saw Julian raise his hand to interrupt him.Smith rubbed his hands together and asked, even adding a respectful title in his words, “L-leader, what is it?”“Just tell me where we can find the things you need. I don’t want to hear the rest of the bullshit.”The poor fat man released a sigh of relief, then thought for a brief moment before opening his mouth and speaking while counting on his fingers with each place he named.“Hospitals, large

“I heard you claim you can make cars run again?”Smith stared at the frightening bald man who looked like a gangster. He raised his hand and scratched the back of his head nervously.“Well yes, something like that.”“Something like that?” The gangster raised the eyebrows he did not have with a frown, apparently dissatisfied with the answer.“Give me a clearer answer. Can you or not?”Smith patted the hood of a four wheel drive jeep beside him and said impatiently and nervously,“Man, you have to understand that Origin Energy only affected technology like electronic chips, while mechanical components are outside the range of its influence...”The loud banging sound startled him, making him stop speaking with a frightened expression. The gangster lifted his hand from the hood, leaving behind a clear handprint on the metal!.“Smith!. That’s your name right? Please keep these physics lessons for someone else...”“Umm actually this isn’t physics...” Smith shut his mouth and swallowed his w
