Chapter One Hundred and Thirty-One: CHESS AND CHECKERS
Marcus and his father shared a look. Who the hell called the police? “Open the gates. We have a warrant.” The officer shouted out again, the speakers from the gate intercoms blaring loudly.Marcus looked at the body, nervous about it being seen in his compound. For the police to be here then someone must have called them. Mark maybe? He frowned and turned to one of his men. “Tell the guards to let them in through the inner gates. We’ll receive them in the lobby.” The man walked off to deliver the message as Marcus turned back to the rest of them and his father. “We’ll leave the scene like this. The one in my room too. The police were called here and would probably decide to arrest me on the grounds of what happened at the event tonight. Coupled with the eyewitnesses from the party they would assume that I killed Finch due to the altercation. Let them go through the evidence and get all that they need. I’ll handle the rest.” “They can’t arrest you. You’re innocent. I will not sta
Chapter One Hundred and Thirty: ON ALERT
“What the hell happened tonight?” Marcus shouted at the top of his lungs as he addressed the whole of the security team that was meant to be on top of things while the event was going on. They all stood in the lobby, a bit of fear creeping into all the people in the room. Men flinched at the authority but knew better than to stand up to the Wei heir. As at that moment, several minutes after Marcus had discovered the grim gift left for him by Mark himself, the event was brought to a close and the guests were told to leave. They were fed a lie about a stray animal wandering onto the property; using the news about the zoo losing a lion to their advantage, and them not being able to find it in time. The lie was fed to the guests and to avoid any problems everyone was asked to go home. Marcus had then promptly called every single member of his security team to address them on the bullshit he had just encountered in his own bedroom. On the night of a freaking annual ball no less. He had
Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Nine: A SIGNED LETTER
Marcus had walked off with Rachel leaving his father to pick up the pieces of the shocked guests. The scene had put the ball at a standstill as people whispered to themselves spreading their own version of what happened and trying to understand why Marcus was so riled up because of it. Neither of them knew that Marcus and Rachel were even married to begin with.Micah had stepped up to the plate to handle the rest of the event, allowing his son to take care of a possibly wounded Rachel. He addressed the crowd, taking their minds off what had just happened. “I’m sorry for the commotion everyone but I want to assure everyone that it has been taken care of. So, if we could all just go back to the ball and begin our fundraiser for the orphanages of New York city.” The crowd moved like mindless creatures and clapped completely following Micah’s lead but not entirely removing their minds from the escapade that Finch pulled. As the event went on and the jubilations continued, Marcus and R
Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Eight: A COMMOTION AT THE PARTY
The day of the ball had arrived and just as Rachel had promised she had been with Marcus every step of the way in the planning process. The hall that was being used was decked with everything festive ornament you could think of. From an enormous Christmas tree to the white and red bows to the champagne mountain to the colorful bulbs to the wreaths and even the mistletoes that were scattered around the hall to excite the guests to a night of possible shenanigans with their fellow workers in the business circuit. The drooping chandeliers caused the dancing of elegant shadows around the hall that added to its whimsical but ethereal look. A look that Rachel had tried her best to attain. Marcus stood regal in a sharp black tuxedo, his brown hair slicked back and his brown eyes sparkling with confidence. Well, as much confidence as he could exude considering his circumstance. He looked through the large area filled with gift boxes and souvenirs from all the best brands like Prada, Saint L
Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Seven: WELCOMED DISTRACTIONS
Chris had left and the office had returned to its serene calmness just like it was before everything went to hell. The doctor had tried to get information about what was happening from Marcus, but Lori caught the drift in Marcus’ eyes and swiftly escorted the doctor out of the room with him still trying to get answers. Marcus plopped on his seat and let out a deep breath after Lori had taken the doctor out. Chris was lost more than he was in this situation. How was he going to fight against someone who didn’t even know what they were doing half the time? He rubbed his eyes, thinking of going to meet Jasmine again but he dissuaded himself from it. She was the one who even informed Mark of what was going on. She wouldn’t be the right person to speak to, but he did need to speak to someone about it to get a fresh perspective. That’s when the image of someone entered his mind. Rachel. He could tell her what was happening without burdening his father and get her point of view of what to d
Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Six: THE REASON I'M HERE
“My sister must have mentioned me but I’ll introduce myself again. Hi, I’m Mark.” Marcus shrugged back from the thought of even touching this man’s hand. His face showed it and Mark caught up to it. Was this the Mark that Jasmine had told him about or was it just a ploy by Chris to avoid being caught up in the whirlwind of chaos he had created by just showing up? Mark, Chris or whoever as Marcus saw it, frowned and pulled back, beginning to pout. “You must be joking?” Marcus said, not really amused by what was going on in his office. “I understand. It may be hard to believe that it is me. I’m sure you’re wondering if Chris is playing a prank on you, but I can assure you that this is all me. Give or take.” He said, shaking his hand from side to side. Marcus could tell that whether it was Chris or Mark, the person that sat down across from him was smart and cunning. He would have to tread carefully when dealing with him. He leaned closer now, seeming intrigued rather than the way
Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Five: TWO SIDES OF A COIN
“What do you mean Mark is Chris?” Jasmine cried out louder using her hands to cover her face as if she was afraid of Marcus seeing her true emotions. “My brother has dissociative identity disorder. It’s a condition where he has two or more than two personalities. Last time I was privy to it he had just two. It was caused by the trauma we went through as children with my dad leaving and my mum always drinking. It’s like I said, Chris wasn’t the one who harmed my mother, Mark was. And it’s all Eric’s fault.” Jasmine sniffled and continued. “The night that it happened, my mum and I had a fight. My brother and I hadn’t eaten for two full days but that day I had managed to get some change. The change I planned to use and get food, but she had used it to buy drugs and alcohol. She had been drinking and doing drugs all day that day and I got fed up. I cursed her out and it turned into a hissy fit with me being on the receiving end. She slapped me and called me a whore and I left angrily
Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Four: ANSWERS
Jasmine Wei was a hard woman to find. Not because she was trying to lead a quiet life of some sort but because she was one of those people who saw technology as a way of not only your family and unknown people knowing about you but also for the government to spy on you. In other words, a conspiracy nut. The woman had accounts on several apps when she was younger but in the three years leading up to the previous one, she had fallen off the face of the earth. If not for the fact that Lori was able to use her mildly intact credit card information and the medical presence she had in hospitals to track her, they may have never known where she was. Luckily for Marcus, she was in town. Not on business or pleasure. She had come because of her father’s trial which according to some people Lori spoke to, was to see him rot behind bars like he deserved. Good enough for him. Marcus got out of his car and eyed the building he stood in front of. The Great Gatsby. A massive but homey looking bed a
Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Three: A Prison Visit
Marcus rushed into the mansion after he had basically acted out a scene from fast and furious on the streets leading back to his home. Unlike how he had been when his uncle had betrayed him, his blood boiled fervently at the thought of a cousin from his uncle’s side rearing his head at that time especially when Lori had confirmed what the man had said by the background check she had done. But still how was Chris here? How was he even real? Why didn’t he come forward earlier? Why now, when he had put all this behind him for Christ sake? Marcus had never heard of a son from his uncle, barely even a daughter even though the man had been deceiving him from the beginning but this in its entirety was out of the blue. Marcus moved as fast as he could without alarming anyone he saw in the building, his heart pounding in his chest. He had to tell his father what had just happened. If anyone would have an answer to this, he would. Micah was Eric’s brother after all. He checked every room he th
