Chapter 1
Chapter One The $200,000
Abel stood outside the glass wall, staring right at his sick mother lying motionless beneath the white sheets.
A tear forced its way down his cheek as he wiped his eyes with a hanky.
He married the only daughter of the Clement Family. That had been his saving grace to secure his mother’s life for the past five years.
For this, he’d endured the harsh treatment, the judgment, and the slavery that his wife’s family had made out of him.
But none of that mattered to him anymore.
Not when his mother’s life was hanging by a thread.
“Sir, I’m afraid your mother’s life has deteriorated rapidly. We need emergency surgery to keep her alive. If not…” a doctor in a white robe said.
Abel sighed.
He already knew what was coming next.
“How much are we talking about?”
“$200,000.00.”
His heart pounded.
Two hundred thousand dollars.
“Fine. I will get it,” he said slowly.
“Okay. Please hurry, so we can start the surgery immediately.”
Two hundred thousand dollars was a lot of money. Adora, his wife, had been the one who paid for the monthly hospital bills. His home delivery job salary was not enough to pay for the bills. But now, he needed two hundred thousand dollars to save his mother’s life?
Where was he supposed to get that kind of money?
His heart raced. His hands shook. He dug them into his pocket nonetheless and pulled out his cell phone.
There was only one person he could call.
“Adora,” he dialed.
“Can I ask you for something?” he began as he heard the call connect.
“Go ahead,” Adora said calmly.
“My mother needs emergency surgery, and I need two hundred thousand. I…I wouldn’t ask if I had another option. Could you lend it to me? I’ll pay you back.”
Adora didn’t say anything.
The silence on the other end of the phone made Abel’s chest tighten.
“Hello?” Abel said.
“Are you there?”
“You must really think I’m a fool, huh?” she scoffed after a minute, like she was processing what Abel had just told her, and now she had the verdict for truth.
“You think I’m just going to keep handing you money every time you come up with another story? Your mother needs surgery, and suddenly you need two hundred thousand. How convenient.”
“Adora, please. My mother needs this right away. Or else… Please, Adora. I will do anything you want, just…”
Abel heard the call end suddenly.
He stared at the phone in disbelief.
She had hung up.
Just like that.
He closed his eyes. His stomach tightened. His legs shook. The only person he knew who could lend him the money had just hung up on him while he was still pleading to get the money from her.
He exhaled deeply, not knowing what to do.
But he couldn’t stand there doing nothing.
His mother was in that room, fighting for her life.
He stepped out of the hospital. “Maybe asking her face to face would make her reconsider,” he thought as he approached his car, an old model 1991 Toyota Corolla, Adora was gracious enough to buy him that on a fourth-hand purchase seven years ago.

Abel stood in the compound of the private estate, staring at the multi-million-dollar mansion.
A person like him shouldn’t have to worry about money ever in his life.
He was the husband of Adora Clement, the richest family in Blackridge City.
But then, who would believe that he was just a useless husband, or so they called him?
A liability whom they did a favor because of the friendship that was between Adora’s grandfather and his grandfather.
For five years, Abel had swallowed every insult thrown at him. He had endured being treated like he was beneath them. He had done everything they asked of him.
All because he needed their help to keep his mother alive.
He sighed as he approached the front door.
He raised his hand and pushed it open.
Stepping in, he went to the first grand living room.
Adora crossed her leg.
All morning, she had been scrolling through T****k, having fun and waiting for her useless husband to come wash all the plates and cook for the family.
But he had called instead and made up an excuse that his mother needed emergency surgery.
She was already irritated.
And now, the sound of the door opening made her look up.
Abel stepped in.
“It’s about time you came home. Now go do the dishes and cook. I am starving.”
“I will, Adora,” Abel said immediately.
He stood right in front of her.
“I will do everything you want and need me to do, but please, I just need you to help me fi…”
“Forget it!” Adora interrupted, waving her hand.
Abel swallowed.
He had come all this way because he thought seeing him face to face would make her understand.
Instead, she didn’t even want to hear him.
“Listen, I’ve done my best for your mum, okay? And I am exhausted. If you really need me to lend you that kind of money, then you follow the right procedures. Besides, how am I sure you’re telling me the truth?”
Abel’s heart tightened.
The right procedure.
He knew exactly what that meant.
To follow the right procedure to get that money would take a lot of time. Minimum of seven working days.
He didn’t have that kind of time to spend.
The surgery must happen quickly.
Every minute mattered.
“I promise you I am not lying. You can call the hospital. Adora, you have the hospital’s number. Or you can send your personal assistant to the hospital. They can confirm if I am lying or not. Please, just…”
“I said forget it, Abel. What don’t you understand about that?!”
“If you need that kind of money, follow the right procedure. I will sign it when the file reaches my table. Anything beyond that, I am not interested. Now get your ass to the kitchen and fucking cook what I am going to eat!”
Abel’s heart dropped.
He looked at her for a moment.
He wanted to beg again.
He wanted to remind her that this was his mother’s life they were talking about.
But he already knew she had made up her mind.
He turned towards the exit.
“Are you not going to go cook?”
“No!” Abel answered.
“My mother’s life is more important.”
He stepped out.
Before he could reach his car, his phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Mr. Kane, where are you?” the doctor asked urgently. “You need to come back to the hospital.”
Abel’s heart raced. “Why? What happened?”
“Your mother’s condition has worsened. We cannot wait any longer. You need to get the money immediately if you want us to proceed with the surgery.”
Abel stopped walking.
“How long do I have?”
The doctor hesitated.
“Not long.”
The call ended.
Abel stared at his phone.
He had less time than he thought.
And there was only one place left for him to go.
His boss.
