Zervik’s polite smile didn’t reach his eyes, and the crisp click of his loafers on the wet concrete seemed far too loud in the confined space of the transit terminal.

"Survival is a harsh term for what you're offering, Zervik," Deyvorn said, his voice dropping an octave as his thumb slid over the hidden catch of his heavy-duty utility knife. "You want the map, the cart, and whatever else is under this canvas, and you think a mild threat is going to make me hand it over?"

"It’s not a mild threat

"Keep your breath, old man, you're going to need every drop of it if we're making that drainage exit," Mara snapped, though the dangerous edge in her voice had softened just enough to betray a flicker of reluctant respect. She jerked her chin toward the gaping maw of the tunnel ahead, where the rusted tracks vanished into black, knee-deep sludge. "Ten minutes is all I'm giving you. If you drag your feet, I'm locking the bulkhead behind you and letting the corporate sweep turn your fancy suit into confetti.""Generous as always, Mara," Zervik muttered, smoothing down the lapel of his ruined jacket with an absurd display of mid-level corporate vanity. "Shall we?"Deyvorn grabbed the iron handles of his delivery cart, his muscles groaning in protest as the heavy wheels churned through the thick, viscous mud of the abandoned rail bed. Behind him, Tazvik shuffled along with a harsh, rattling wheeze, leaning heavily on a scavenged pipe for support. The air grew rapidly colder, smelling of s

  • Chapter 19: Reunion in the Dark

Mara’s knuckles whitened around the grip of her plasma-cutter, the sharp hiss of the blue flame cutting through the stagnant air of the rusted railcar. "Drones don't clear secondary exits, corporate. They seal them.""They do if you hack the grid routing before they reach the blast doors," Zervik countered, his voice remaining uncomfortably calm as he stepped right into the perimeter of her personal space. "Which I already did three miles back using your local terminal junction. We have a ten-minute window before the automated sweep realizes the bypass is looping."Deyvorn slammed his hand against the rusted iron frame of his delivery cart, the physical ledgers shifting heavily beneath their worn canvas tarp. "Ten minutes isn't enough to get through a rusted bulkhead, Zervik, especially with Tazvik moving like he swallowed an anchor.""I heard that, boy," Tazvik rasped from the dark corner of the car, his breathing coming in shallow, wheezing hitches as he hauled himself up against a

  • Chapter 18: Solitary Echoes

"Corporate garbage talking about poisoning workers is rich coming from a man who looks like he just crawled out of an executive board meeting," Mara spat, her hand tightening around the insulated grip of her plasma-cutter as the blue flame hissed a warning into the damp air of the railcar. "Why should I trust a pencil-pusher who smells like fresh laundry and corporate cologne not to drop a tracking beacon in my backyard the second I turn my back?""Because your backyard is currently lit up by three squads of private security forces who tracked this exact cologne straight to your front door," Zervik replied without missing a beat, stepping closer with a cool, irritating composure that made Deyvorn want to punch him just to wipe the smirk off his face. "Unless you want your entire scrap empire reduced to slag by a plasma-sweep, you're going to let us use your secondary drainage exit, or we can all sit here and wait for the drones to knock."Mara's eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as s

  • Chapter 17: Waterlogged

"Projections that show a forty percent drop in nutrient density and a deliberate spike in chemical binders," Zervik finished smoothly, his expensive corporate boots clicking against the rusted iron floor of the railcar as he stepped fully into the dim amber glow of a dangling utility lamp. "Which means every protein block manufactured in the last six months is slowly poisoning the entire workforce. If you happen to know a few rival black-market vendors who wouldn't mind undercutting the central syndicate's food supply, Mara, those pages are worth more than your entire weight in scraped copper."Mara didn't blink, her gaze darting between Zervik's tailored suit jacket—now stained with foul-smelling subterranean sludge—and the dull gray corners of the physical ledgers resting in Deyvorn's cart. The heavy plasma-cutter still hissed on her shoulder, its blue pilot light casting an eerie flicker across the damp steel walls of the tunnel."Corporate garbage talking about poisoning workers,"

  • Chapter 16: The Blind Corner

"Physical ledgers?" Mara’s lips curled into a dry, humorless smirk as she stepped closer, the blue pilot light of her heavy plasma-cutter painting a cold, electronic hue across her sharp cheekbones. "People don't use paper down here unless they're hiding something big from the net, courier. And big secrets make a lot of noise when they drop."Deyvorn shoved his utility knife back into its sheath with a sharp click, his eyes locking onto hers with hostile defiance. "They're just heavy garbage, Mara. Nothing you can fence on the black market or trade for a crate of synthetic protein.""Try me," Zervik cut in smoothly from the darker end of the battered railway car, stepping out of the shadows with his hands raised casually in a non-threatening gesture, though his eyes remained calculating. "Those ledgers contain quarterly financial projections for the mid-level synthetic protein refineries—projections that show a forty percent drop in nutrient density and a deliberate spike in chemical

  • Chapter 15: Scavenger Politics

"Your trouble is currently occupying my favorite drainage tunnel," Mara snapped, stepping away from the door frame and closing the distance between them with predatory speed. The blue pilot light of the plasma-cutter cast sharp, distorted shadows across her scarred cheekbones. "And trouble doesn't pay municipal taxes, Tazvik. It just brings more boots down here, and boots ruin the floorboards."Deyvorn didn't lower his utility knife, his muscles coiled like tension springs beneath his damp canvas jacket. "We aren't staying, Mara. We just need to catch our breath and check the cart's axle before the next shift change at the lower substation.""Your cart looks like it was dragged through a garbage shredder," Mara remarked, her gaze flicking past Deyvorn to the rusted wire-mesh bed of the vehicle. A corner of the stained canvas tarp had slipped, revealing the heavy, dull-gray corners of the physical ledgers resting underneath. Her eyes lingered on the bound paper for a fraction of a seco
