An hour later, the tires of the sedan groaned against the cracked, salt-encrusted gravel of the abandoned industrial perimeter. James drove with a quiet, geometric precision, his massive gloved hands completely steady on the steering wheel. The landscape morphed into a jagged cemetery of rusted machinery and bleeding steel until, at last, the skeletal silhouette of the old oil station materialized through the lingering morning fog.

He brought the vehicle to a silent stop.

James stepped out of the car, the heavy soles of his leather combat boots grounding into the damp earth. Everywhere was wrapped in a suffocating, absolute silence—the exact same heavy stillness that had hung over the yard the last time he and Todd had entered this trap.

Suddenly, a sharp, lethal hiss cut through the air.

A small, black-tipped poison arrow shot out from the shadow of the rusted storage units, flying with blinding, supersonic speed directly toward James’s throat. But James didn't flinch. To his heightened senses, the world had slowed to an agonizing crawl. With a fluid, almost casual flick of his wrist, his leather-paneled glove snapped through the air, catching the arrow mere inches from his collarbone.

He held the weapon up, his gaze tracking the flight path across the yard until his eyes locked onto a sniper concealed behind the massive iron curvature of an oil tank. Through the distance, their eyes met. The sniper’s pupils dilated in immediate, primal terror as he realized his lethal strike had been caught like a common fly.

“Not this time,” James said, his voice dropping into a thick, resonant vibration that seemed to rumble through the wet ground. “I didn't come here as a stranger. I came to make a deal.” He tightened his grip on the arrow, snapping the wooden shaft into splinters. “And I see you.”

“Stop.”

The sharp command cut through the fog behind him. James turned his head slowly, his long black leather trench coat billowing around his boots.

Emerging from the mist were Lin, Kia, and Din. They were dressed identically to the tactical imagery of the Pitch operatives seen in 105297.jpg—wearing heavy, hooded midnight-black trench coats that completely shadowed their faces, layered over reinforced tactical vests, knee-armored combat trousers, and thick leather gloves. Their weapons were raised, their postures rigid and clinical.

“You will be coming with us,” Lin said, her voice muffled slightly by her hood but dripping with cold authority. “But first, you will have to show us Tidder and the crystal stone, along with the key.”

James stood his ground, his expression unreadable beneath the high collar of his tactical gear. “Tidder is here. And the crystal stone and the key are right where they belong—with her. Check the car.”

Din didn't say a word. He stepped past James, his boots crunching on the gravel as he walked to the rear door of the sedan and pulled it open. Inside the cabin sat Tidder, her head lolling against the leather seat, her eyes tightly closed under the lingering chemical sleep. Her hands were securely bound behind her back.

Without hesitation, Din reached into the vehicle, his heavy gloves unzipping her cropped motorcycle jacket to expose her neck. There, resting against her collarbone, was the glowing violet crystal shard and the fractured metallic template of the key. Satisfied, Din reached in, hoisted Tidder’s limp, leather-clad form effortlessly over his broad shoulder, and slammed the car door shut.

He marched back to Lin’s side, his chest rising. “Everything is here.”

“Now, come with us,” Lin commanded.

James didn’t hesitate. He fell into step behind them, his massive shadow looming over the three operatives as they guided him toward the rear of the main processing building. They turned a sharp, rusted corner into a concrete alcove. Kia stepped forward, using a heavy security keycard to release the pneumatic lock on a reinforced steel door.

Lin entered first, followed by Din carrying Tidder, with James stepping into the threshold next. Kia brought up the rear, pulling the heavy barrier shut until the locks engaged with a heavy, pressurized thud.

They began descending a long, steep flight of concrete stairs that cut deep into the subterranean underbelly of the station. The air grew thick, cold, and heavy with the scent of copper and damp mold. At the bottom of the stairwell, Kia pushed open a second reinforced door, revealing a vast, dimly lit bunker.

It was the exact same subterranean room where James and Todd had found themselves trapped when this nightmare first began.

The moment James stepped into the space, his eyes locked onto the far end of the room. Sitting under a harsh fluorescent halogen bulb was Roman. The moment the door clicked shut, Roman stood up from his chair, a smug, triumphant smile carving into his ruthless features as he walked forward.

“I knew you would bring her to me,” Roman chuckled, his eyes gleaming with an insatiable greed.

James took a step forward, his towering frame casting a massive shadow across the floorboards. “Where’s Todd?” He snapped his eyes toward Din, his voice hardening. “Put her down.”

“Bring her to me,” Roman countered, ignoring James entirely.

Kia stepped forward, taking Tidder’s limp body from Din’s shoulder and lowering her gently onto the cold concrete floor right at Roman’s feet.

Roman looked down at his sister's unconscious face, his smile turning cruel. “Tidder… wake up.” She didn't move. Roman snapped his fingers toward the back of the room. “Get some cold water.”

Within seconds, a low-level syndicate guard emerged from the shadows carrying a rusted iron bucket filled to the brim with freezing water. Without a word, he splashed the contents directly across Tidder’s face.

Tidder gasped violently, her eyes snapping wide open as the freezing water shocked her central nervous system. She sat up instantly, her wet dark hair clinging to her cheeks as her chest heaved, her boots skidding against the floor as she desperately tried to orient herself in the light.

Roman barely looked at her struggle. He kept his eyes on James. “The key and the stone?”

“Still with her,” James said flatly.

“Take it off,” Roman commanded.

Kia knelt down immediately, her gloved fingers tearing the heavy silver chain from Tidder’s neck while she was still coughing and regaining her bearings. Kia stepped back and placed the violet crystal shard and the key template directly into Roman’s open hand.

The moment his fingers closed around the metal, Roman let out a breathy, manic laugh. He held the artifacts up to the harsh light, his face twisted in a mask of absolute delusion. “People will now clearly bow their heads down,” he whispered, his voice shaking with a terrifying ecstasy. “Once they see their true king.”

James watched him, a profound, icy disgust settling into his chest. “You’re thoroughly ruthless, Roman,” James said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet register. “And a fucking disappointment.”

Roman’s laughter died instantly. His head snapped up, his eyes blazing with anger. “Am I?”

“Where is Todd?” James demanded, his tone leaving no room for negotiation.

“Bow,” Roman hissed, stepping closer, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the key. “Bow down to me first.”

James’s jaw tightened, his fingers flexing inside his leather gloves as his fists clenched tightly at his sides. The fury inside him was rising, feeding a dark, dormant current in his blood.

Roman mockingly shook his head. “Well, well, well… bring out his poor friend.”

From a dark alcove at the back of the bunker, two heavy security guards emerged, dragging a broken figure between them. It was Todd. He wasn't able to walk; his boots dragged limply along the concrete, his head hanging low. His legs and the entirety of his skull were wrapped in thick, blood-stained industrial bandages. The guards hauled him to the center of the room and callously threw him to the ground, letting him collapse directly beside James’s boots.

James didn't move an inch, but his chest rose and fell with a terrifying, rhythmic speed. He looked down at the broken, bandaged mass of his only true friend. Slowly, deliberately, James bent down. He wrapped his massive, armored arm gently around Todd’s neck, hoisting him up just enough to support his weight.

Roman watched them, a sadistic grin returning to his face. “We haven’t done yet, James. I haven't said you can leave.”

James looked up from the floor, his eyes locking onto Roman like twin barrels of a shotgun.

“Bow down your head to your king,” Roman ordered arrogantly. With a flourish, he slipped the silver chain around his own neck, pressing the crystal against his chest.

But nothing happened. The stone remained dark, dead, and stagnant—completely devoid of the vibrant, humming violet aura it had possessed when it rested against Tidder’s skin.

Roman’s smile faltered. He looked down at his chest, his fingers scrambling to touch the dead crystal. “Bow down your head to your king!”

James slowly rose back to his full height, a faint, mocking shadow of a smile appearing on his lips. His voice carried a chilling, superior weight. “Your king? Or my brother’s slave?”

The words hit Roman like a physical blow. He swallowed his breath sharply, his face turning pale under the halogen light as his hands froze over the dark stone. “You… you know?”

The entire room went dead silent. Roman’s mind raced, realizing the structural secrets of the Pitch had been breached. He took a step back, his voice tightening with a sudden panic. “Leave. Take him and leave. Never come back here.”

“I wasn't preparing to leave without my sister,” James said, his voice echoing with an unnatural, rumbling distortion. He stepped away from Todd, his long leather coat sweeping against the floor as he advanced. “And I will destroy absolutely everything in this room to get whatever I want. Because I have already suffered too much to let you take everything from me.”

Roman paused for a terrifying second, his eyes darting to his elite operatives. “Take him down!”

Instantly, Lin, Kia, and Din lunged forward in perfect coordination, their weapons raised to execute James where he stood.

James didn't lift his hands. He didn't shift his stance. He simply opened his mouth and uttered a single, absolute command that vibrated with the cosmic weight of the crystal hidden beneath his own armor:

“Sleep.”

Before the three elite operatives could take another step, their eyes instantly rolled back into their heads. Their muscles liquefied, and all three collapsed heavily onto the hard concrete floor, completely unconscious but breathing steadily.

Roman took two frantic steps backward, his boots skidding through the puddle of water on the floor. His breath came in ragged, terrified gasps as he stared at his top killers lying helpless on the ground. “What… what the hell is that?”

“That’s real power, Roman,” James said, his steps slow and unhurried as he closed the distance.

In a fit of wild panic, Roman ripped the silver chain off his neck. He stared at the dead violet glass in his palm and hurled it violently against the stone floor. The fake crystal shattered into a dozen useless, non-luminous fragments. “It’s a fake!” Roman screamed.

“I modeled it,” James said flatly. “I made the replica while you were busy playing king.”

Before Roman could scream for the rest of his guards, James simply lifted his left hand, his fingers spread, and thrust his palm forward through the empty air.

An invisible, catastrophic wave of kinetic force erupted from his hand. The shockwave hit Roman squarely in the chest, lifting his body completely off the ground and launching him ten feet through the air. Roman crashed brutally against the reinforced concrete wall of the bunker, the impact fracturing the plaster before he slid down to the floor, completely knocked out.

Instantly, the remaining fifteen security guards stationed around the perimeter of the bunker raised their automatic rifles, aiming directly at James’s chest, their fingers tightening on the triggers.

James turned his head slowly, looking at the circle of weapons pointed at his heart. His eyes were no longer fully human; they gleamed with a dark, terrifying violet hum, his voice changing entirely as the true crystal hidden beneath his vest fed directly on his absolute hatred and deep-seated rage.

“Your guns are just as weak as all of you are,” James boomed, the sound rattling the metal rafters above.

“SLEEP!”

The command tore through the bunker like an electromagnetic pulse. Silently, simultaneously, every single guard in the room dropped their weapons. The rifles clattered against the floor as all fifteen men collapsed like ragdolls, plunged into an instantaneous, unbreakable slumber.

Five miles away, deep within the fortified industrial compound of the syndicate, a heavy, suffocating silence hung over the grand meeting hall.

Father sat motionless upon his high wooden throne, his ringed fingers resting on the armrests as he stared down the long center aisle.

At the base of the dais, Code 202 was on his knees. His head was bowed so low his forehead nearly touched the cold stone floorboards, his posture completely shattered by the weight of operational disgrace.

“I failed you, Father,” 202 muttered, his raspy voice shaking with a raw, agonizing shame. “I couldn’t bring the stone and the key back home to the seat. James retrieved them from the girl… but he turned their frequencies against me. Please… let me take the absolute punishment that a failure like me deserves.”

Father didn’t move. He let out a long, slow breath that echoed through the empty rows of chairs, his ancient eyes boring into the back of the operative’s neck.

“Yes. You failed,” the old man said flatly, his voice devoid of any human warmth. “But you can still undo your failure.”

202 raised his head slightly, his eyes hollow but desperate for redemption as he looked up at the throne. “How?”

We just have to play this path strategically with everyone .” Vener, who was still clutching her digital tablet tightly against her chest, shook her head. Her brow furrowed deeply as she tried to process the sheer scale of the manipulation he was hinting at. “What? Wait, Roman... I don’t really get what you’re trying to say. Just lay it out completely clean for me.” Roman turned around slowly, his eyes gleaming with a sharp, predatory focus beneath the dim office lighting. “This book is a roadmap, Vener. It holds the

I really want to!” Tidder insisted, her grip tightening as she forced her weight against his arm, her eyes wide with a little girl's stubborn hope. “Come on, James. It’s just a game. You won't actually be stabbing me with a real knife.”James looked down at his little sister, his expression softening. “I will never, ever stab you, Tidder.”“Okay, then please let’s play it right now. "He was respected because every single person in this room knew he was willing to carry heavy structural burdens that would have crushed your spine. He made horrific sacrifices that none of you vultures even know about."Roman opened his mouth to retort, but Lyssa cut him off with a sharp, dismissive gesture."You want his throne?" She pointed a rigid finger toward the coffin. "Then first, you carry his coffin out into the mud. You want his crown?" Her eyes hardened into pure steel.
