Class: shadow reaper

The forest grew darker the deeper Alex ventured. The trees rose like pillars, their branches clawing against the gray sky, and every shadow whispered danger. The closer he moved toward the heart of the woods, the more frequently he spotted goblins. Their yellow eyes glinted between the leaves, some lurking in groups, others darting alone, but all of them circling the path like vultures sensing prey.

Alex gripped the scythe in his hand. Its blade gleamed faintly even in the gloom, the curved edge promising death.

"These creatures shouldn't be higher than level ten," he muttered to himself.

The bushes rustled. A goblin stumbled out, squat and green-skinned, its jagged teeth dripping with saliva. Alex's body moved before his mind had time to second-guess. His feet slammed into the ground, propelling him forward like a dart, and the scythe sliced through the air with a sharp whistle.

By the time the monster realized what had happened, its head was already tumbling to the ground.

A faint chime echoed inside Alex's head.

[Congratulations on killing a Level 2 monster – 300 XP gained.]

[Congratulations on reaching Level 1.]

[You have gained 2 unallocated stat points.]

A window appeared in his vision, shimmering faintly.

[Level: 1]

[Strength: 11]

[Agility: 10]

[Stamina: 12]

[Mana: 0]

"So each level grants two points." Alex exhaled, studying the screen. "I'll keep things balanced for now."

He pushed one into Strength, one into Agility. The window shifted accordingly.

[Strength: 12]

[Agility: 11]

[Stamina: 12]

[Mana: 0]

The change wasn't earth-shattering, but Alex could feel it—the faint tightening of muscle, the quicker spring in his step. It was enough.

Without hesitation, he continued deeper into the forest.

Time bled away, measured not by hours but by corpses. The scythe grew heavier with blood, his arms grew sore, but the glowing messages that appeared with each kill urged him on. By the time he reached level five, Alex noticed a shift.

The goblins no longer skulked alone. They moved in coordinated groups of four, hissing and snarling in unison.

Alex's brow furrowed. "A Lord... It must be nearby."

Ordinary goblins had no sense of cooperation. Only the presence of a higher authority could bend them into formation. Lords were rare, dangerous, and unnatural—they defied the Tower's restrictions, monsters that should not exist, yet did.

The thought alone was enough to drain the strength from his limbs. He climbed into the branches of an ancient tree, found a sturdy perch, and allowed his eyes to close, if only for a moment.

When he opened them again, he was no longer in the forest.

A meadow stretched endlessly around him, lush with wildflowers swaying under a gentle breeze. Their fragrance filled the air, intoxicating and calm. He sat upon the grass, and beside him leaned a woman with some dragonic features dressed in a black gown, her gown trailing across the flowers like spilled moonlight. Her face was indistinct, blurred by fog, yet the warmth of her presence felt undeniable.

They spoke of the future. Of the Tower's end, of freedom, of a grand wedding beneath a sunlit sky.

"I love you," Alex whispered at last, his chest swelling with fragile joy.

The woman parted her lips to answer.

But the meadow bled red.

The flowers withered into corpses, the sweet air curdled into stench, and the woman's gown darkened into heavy armor soaked in gore and her black tail moving left and right in an imposing manner. Her hand gripped a sword, and before Alex could move, its steel plunged into his chest.

Her eyes glowed with cold fire as she said:

"Did you think I would ever love you, me a person of a superior race would never love you useless fool. Die"

Alex woke with a violent jolt. The world tilted, and he toppled from the branch, hitting the ground with a painful thud. His breath came ragged, and fury burned through the lingering fear in his veins.

"...Fine," he muttered, standing with shaking hands. "Let's kill some goblins."

Blood marked his path as Alex carved his way through the woods, slaying every goblin that crossed his path. By the time he reached the towering hide tent that marked the chieftain's lair, his level had climbed to eight. Fourteen unspent stat points hovered temptingly at the edge of his vision.

This time, he invested carefully: Strength, Agility, Stamina, and finally Mana.

[Strength: 15]

[Agility: 15]

[Stamina: 15]

[Mana: 4]

"Now I'm ready."

He pushed open the curtain.

The reek of blood nearly drove him back. Inside, the tent stretched wider than it should have, and nearly a hundred goblins crowded within. At the far end sat a massive figure upon a throne of bones, its scarred bulk radiating malice. The Goblin Lord.

Its gaze met Alex's, and it roared.

The horde surged forward.

Alex's scythe sang as it cleaved through the first wave. Four heads rolled across the dirt. He spun with momentum, carving through a dozen more. Yet still they came.

An arrow hissed past, cutting a shallow line across his cheek. His eyes snapped to the rear, where archers loosed in frantic volleys. Five of them.

He charged, the scythe spinning like a shield, deflecting shafts midair. A single wide swing ended three archers at once. He flowed into the next strike, piercing the skull of the fourth. The last fled to the Goblin Lord's side, trembling.

The rest fell soon after. Alex stood alone amid the carnage, his body bleeding from dozens of shallow cuts, his breath ragged.

Only two enemies remained.

The archer. And the Lord.

The giant rose, its scarred body dwarfing Alex. Three times his height, muscles corded with old battles, it gripped a massive bone club in its hand.

The Lord charged, roaring like thunder.

Alex leapt high, spinning, his scythe a blur. The blade bit into the Lord's flesh—yet only shallowly. The monster's arm blocked the worst of it, and its counterblow hammered into Alex's gut, hurling him back.

Blood spilled from his lips as he staggered to his feet. Too strong.

The Lord gave him no time. The bone club slammed downward, splitting the earth where Alex had just stood. He scrambled forward, slashing at its legs, drawing blood, but the wounds were far from fatal.

If that club hits me, I'm finished "Alex said to himself".

He darted up the club itself, sprinting along its length, and drove the scythe into the Lord's eye. The beast howled, staggering trying to make sense of the situation. Alex pressed the advantage, slicing its leg clean off and forcing it to its knee, then vaulted onto its back. He raised his weapon high—

But the Lord caught him.

One arm tore away, but the other clamped around Alex's chest, squeezing the air from his lungs.

His vision darkened. So this is it? Dying on the first floor... even after rebirth?

Then a spark. His memory jolted. He was level nine. One more kill would push him to ten.

The last goblin archer still cowered near the throne.

With the last of his strength, Alex pulled a dagger from his inventory and hurled it. The blade struck true, piercing the archer's skull.

The System's voice thundered in his mind.

[Congratulations on reaching Level 10.]

[Stat points gained: 6. Current unallocated: 8.]

[Class Unlocked: Shadow Reaper.]

[Skill Gained: Scythe Talent – First Ability.]

Strength surged through his body like fire. He flooded his stats evenly.

[Strength: 17]

[Agility: 17]

[Stamina: 17]

[Mana: 6]

[Shadow Energy: 10]

Power exploded from within. With a roar, Alex wrenched himself free, dropping heavily to the ground. He charged, scythe flashing, cleaving one of the Lord's legs clean off.

The monster dropped to its knees, bellowing in pain.

Alex drew both mana and shadow energy into his weapon, the blade glowing with a crescent of darkness.

"Half Moon Slash!"

The strike cut clean through the Goblin Lord's neck. Its massive body toppled, head rolling across the blood-soaked floor.

Alex stood victorious. For a heartbeat, silence reigned. Then the scythe slipped from his hands, and exhaustion claimed him.

In the darkness of unconsciousness, the System whispered:

[Congratulations on killing the Goblin Lord.]

[Hidden Quest Completed: Defeat the Goblin Lord.]

[Level Up: 12.]

[First Floor Cleared. Access to the Second Floor granted.]
