The Unlikely Suitor

In the council hall of the Mystical Turtle Count's mansion, Jasmine Yuan stood before her parents, dressed in casual attire, paying her respects. Her parents, Mythical Turtle King Jean and Mythical Turtle Queen Sophia, sat on the stage, their expressions serious.

"Has the martial demonstration gone well, Jasmine?" King Jean asked, his voice firm.

Jasmine Yuan saluted with a fist. "Yes, Father. The demonstration went well, and we did not disgrace the Yuan family. 

"Our family is in a tough spot because my brother isn't capable of handling things, and on top of that, the Empire is taking away some of the powers and privileges that noble families like ours used to have."

King Jean's expression turned grave. "Alas, but unfortunately, your brother Jake Yuan is incompetent. I'm worried about our family's future."

Jasmine Yuan's voice was resolute. "Please rest assured, Father. With your daughter here, our Mystical Turtle kingdom's mansion will not fall. I will remain unmarried for life, stay at home to assist my brother, and protect our Yuan's family's century-old foundation."

Just then, a servant approached and whispered, "Master, there is someone asking to see you. It's the young man Miss Jasmine Yuan brought back today, saying he has urgent matters to report about Miss's marriage."

King Jean's interest was piqued. "I heard Jasmine Yuan's cavalry run over a young man. Could it be him, and it's about a marriage? Bring him to see me."

Moments later, Lucien was brought into the hall, paying his respects to King Jean before getting straight to the point. "I've heard that the Ju family wishes to propose a marriage. Ju Joshua wants to marry Miss Jasmine Yuan."

Both Princess Jasmine Yuan and King Jean Yuan's expressions changed dramatically. The Ju family was a top-tier power in the U Empire, related by marriage to the sovereign Emperor and  to the family of the governor of the southern province.

King Jean Yuan's voice was stern. "This matter is confidential. Even I was unaware. How did you come to know of it?" Lucien explained, "Previously, I was a live-in son-in-law at the Zhang family. 

Emma Zhang and her new fiancé, Damien Lee, thought of me as a fool, so they discussed this matter without any guard."

A servant discreetly informed King Jean Yuan about Lucien's background, revealing his expulsion from the Zhang family due to theft. 

King Jean Yuan's skepticism grew, but he decided to verify the intelligence first.

"Investigate this matter immediately," King Jean Yuan ordered. "Dispatch several teams to scout along all official roads, and if anyone from the Ju family is spotted, report back to me immediately.”

King Jean Yuan's expression was skeptical, but he decided to reward Lucien for the valuable information. "Young man, I don't think highly of you, but the information you've provided is extremely important. I'll surely reward you handsomely. Tell me, what do you want? As long as it doesn't violate national laws or morals, I can grant it."

Lucien's opinion of the king improved instantly. "That's generous," he thought. "Even before verifying the information, you're promising a big reward and allowing me to ask for anything. This means just one word from me, and the Zhang family wouldn't dare touch me." Lucien's eyes lit up with a plan. 

"King, please allow me to stay at the king's mansion and give me a job." Lucien didn't actually want to work; he wanted the opportunity to get close to Princess Jasmine Yuan.

King Jean Yuan agreed, "From now on, you will study with the crown prince. Your parents may have spoiled you, but we at the king's mansion will not. We will surely polish you into a talented individual."

Just then, a subordinate rushed in, panicked. "Master, there's big trouble! The Ju family's Pacify the South General, Julen, arrived at Mystical Dragon City last night with his sons, and is now heading towards Mystical Turtle City!"

 Everyone was shocked, especially Lucien, who was astonished by how quickly the Ju family acted. "I need time to make an impression and be noticed," he thought. "Now, I might only have two to three hours left, and my goddess might belong to someone else."

The Ju family was a massive entity that King Jean Yuan's mansion couldn't afford to offend.

King Jean Yuan knew they couldn't refuse the proposal.

“What? All of a sudden? I don't want to do this.” Princess Jasmine Yuan thought of disfiguring herself to make the Ju family give up the idea of proposing. King Jean Yuan snatched away the knife.

"I must protect our family's century-old foundation, but first and foremost, I must protect my own daughter. And even if you disfigured yourself, the Ju family would still propose to you, unless... unless you get married today, taking in a husband through marriage, making it impossible for the Ju family to proceed."

King Jean Yuan was reluctant to sacrifice his daughter's happiness. "Jasmine, Ju Joshua is also promising and would be an excellent husband. I cannot sacrifice your happiness for the sake of family interests. Would you reconsider?"

Princess Jasmine Yuan kneeled down. "Father, contributing to the family is my greatest happiness. My brother surely won't be able to keep our ancestral legacy, so I will not marry out."

Seeing this, King Jean Yuan sighed deeply. Je understood why his daughter was against marrying Joshua Ju. The Ju family were ruthless and ruled with force and brutality. The only way he could save his daughter was to make her marry before the Ju family arrived.

He decided to marry his daughter now, writing down five names. He ordered his men to invite these individuals to the mansion for Princess Jasmine Yuan to choose from.

Lucien, eager not to let his goddess fall into someone else's arms, quickly said, "Your Majesty, Princess Jasmine Yuan, may I join the competition?" Then, Lucien stepped forward to Princess Jasmine Yuan and told her passionately, "Princess Jasmine Yuan, I also want to marry you."

This made King Jean Yuan quite angry. "What's this fool joining in the competition for?" 

Queen Sophia Yuan quickly comforted her husband. "Husband, don't be angry. We've heard that Lucien is not mature mentally and he's just a child. Why should we stoop to his level? Someone, send this waste back home and give him ten gold coins, but give them to his parents, not him. We'll send for him tomorrow to come to the mansion for study and discipline."

Unexpectedly, Princess Jasmine Yuan's eyes lit up. "Second Fool?" Lucien was confused. "What's that?" It turned out that Lucien had a nickname in the village, "Second Fool," simply because there was also a "Big Fool" in the village, making them the "Fool Duo."

Princess Jasmine Yuan's gaze softened as she looked at Lucien, his child like innocence a refreshing contrast to the cynicism and politics that had worn her down. She felt drawn to his simplicity and genuine nature, a welcome respite from the complexities of the adult world.

This subtle shift in her perspective led her to consider Lucien in a new light, and she decided to allow him to participate in the competition for her hand.
