“Go easy on us after you become the head of the department, Brother Mike.”

“We will throw a celebratory party for you tonight, Sir Mike.”

Everybody began to suck up to Mike, all the tens of employees, except for Caleb who sat rooted in his seat.

With hands in pockets, Mike looked at Caleb with smug satisfaction.

Caleb ignored him and just focused on his work.

Mike smirked and calmly asked the HR manager, “If the deal of Phantom Dream Investments goes through, the core team will be expanded a little, but the regular teams will get cropped, too, won’t they?”

“Not by much since there’s demand,” the HR manager’s words relieved all the employees, “but of course…” he particularly looked toward Caleb’s desk and sneered, “if Phantom Dream Investments discovers that the company employs a useless person like him, they definitely won’t invest.”

“I was thinking the same. Useless employees like Caleb will be the first to go,” Mike laughed, and many other employees started laughing with him.

Caleb was beginning to find it very difficult to sit in his seat, let alone focus on the work at hand.

Was he really going to lose his job?

Should he go and inform the investors about his stake in their company?

He grabbed the water bottle, but there was no water in it.

He got up and went to the water dispenser that was near the guest room.

He didn’t mean to overhear, but he could hear the people inside negotiating about the investment.

Edward the chairman was actively persuading while also preserving his dignity.

The investment company members also responded with respect because Edward’s reputation was as such.

“It seems like the negotiations are going fine,” Caleb filled the bottle with water, but he did not take a single sip.

He returned to his desk and sat there, contemplating on what he should do.

The HR manager went to the guest room once and then came out two minutes later.

“It’s almost a done deal,” he told Mike, and everyone began to clap softly.

Sherry and Mike were already hugging and celebrating.

Mike signaled the HR manager, who nodded and went over to Caleb’s desk. “All the work you’ve done for the company is appreciated, but you are fired.”

“What?” Caleb was shocked even though he saw it coming. He frowned seriously. “Are you sure you want to do this? Even if you come begging later, there won’t be any use.”

“Pfft, hahaha,” the HR manager laughed, and so did some of the employees. He put his hand on Caleb’s desk and grinned, “Don’t worry. You’re very easy to replace.”

“Alright,” With folds playing on his forehead, Caleb started packing his belongings.

“Are you already giving up?” Mike snickered. “You’re such a coward. No wonder Sherry rejected you. Why would she date a spineless guy like you? You’re way below her level. She deserves someone like me who can rise through the ranks and live like a king.”

Some others in the office called him a loser.

Caleb acted like he had no ears.

As he was walking past them with his bag on his back and a box in his hands, Sherry said, “Let’s give him a chance, Mike. If he brings me breakfast and lunch every day, then we’ll let him be.”

She didn’t want to lose her free meal ticket and her emotional dumpster.

“Mm…” Mike thought about it and said, “if that’s what you want, then I’ll not object.”

“You heard him, Caleb,” Sherry quickly said. “Go back to your desk.”

Caleb, however, did not stop.

“For a loser, he’s so arrogant!” some other employees ran their mouths without any care, even though I had helped with their work many times.

One thing became crystal clear at this moment for Caleb.

He didn’t have a single friend in the office.

He only thought he did.

He thought Sherry was his genuine friend, but now he realized that she was just using him. After Mike joined the company, she slowly made her move without even him realizing it.

He believed that Mike and Sherry were just using each other, so they were made for each other.

Caleb walked out of the company building and went to the parking lot where his old car, a 30 year old sky blue toyota corolla, was parked. It was his father’s car.

He put his bag and the box in the boot.

Just then, something banged into his car from the front.

The sound of glass breaking penetrated Caleb’s ears and his heart.

“Who the fuck—” Caleb stormed to the front, but his tongue got stuck in his throat after seeing a dark blue Mercedes AMG roadster that had suffered a dent in its bumper.

“Ah, crap,” a tall young brunette in a black suit stepped out, flipping her voluminous hair without touching it.

Her long hair flowed with the wind. The smell of perfume mixed with shampoo washed Caleb’s face. But her wonderful visage surpassed the sweet scent she gave off. She was exceedingly beautiful even with minimal makeup.

After seeing Caleb, she stopped chewing gum and removed the sunglasses.

They both stared at each other without exchanging a word.

Caleb returned to his apartment. The kids were both sleeping soundly in the back.Velma tried waking them up, but they weren’t responding.“Don’t wake them,” Caleb said. “I’ll bring them to your flat.”She was surprised. “You’ll carry them?”“Yeah.”Velma’s expression slightly changed. (Is he trying to get into my flat using this excuse?)She stepped out of the car.Caleb picked up both the kids into his arms without any issues. He went ahead into the apartment. She quickly followed him. “I was expecting your car to give us some trouble, but it didn’t. I won’t say I’m not surprised.”“Well, we shouldn’t judge things by their appearances,” Caleb said.“Y-You’re right,” Velma smiled somewhat. They took the elevator to reach the first floor. She opened her flat door, and then he dropped the kids on the bed. The four other kids were not sleeping but running and playing around. As Caleb was leaving, “Thanks for everything, Caleb.”Caleb just nodded and was walking away.“Be careful,” she

Even though Ben was singing and his friends were dancing, Velma’s kids sensed the tension in the atmosphere and hid behind their mother.“Ben, there’s no need to go this far,” Velma quickly said. “Caleb, apologize to him.”Ben snickered as he did a wave dance with his legs while standing at the same spot. “He should get on his knees and start kissin’ my boots… before my crew writes his ending in tire marks and bruised suits.”“Caleb, get on your knees,” Velma insisted.“I already said my piece,” Caleb replied. “I will apologize if he apologizes to me first.”“Don’t bark big lines, bro,” Ben said. “You’re going to regret, though.”His two friends rushed in and crafted spinning kicks.Caleb took a couple of steps back and dodged them, though only barely. But a quick side kick followed and struck Caleb in the diaphragm, taking the breath out of him.He was pushed back a couple more steps. A frown creased his face. The food bags were on the ground now.“Get down, Caleb,” Velma said. “And

“Take your fucking hand off of me, trash,” Caleb said these words, and he wasn’t even prompted by the system this time.He did it all on his own.Ben saw something like primal rage flicker in Caleb’s eyes for a second, and he pulled his hand back before he knew it.Still, he was quick to recover. “What did you just say?”“There are children here,” Caleb added. “Or I would have used more appropriate words for you,” Caleb retorted.“Caleb!” Velma hissed at him. “Do you know who this man is? He’s a famous rapper. He makes five figures every year. He owns a big house and a luxury car.”“So what? I’m never going to date him,” Caleb replied.Silence fell for a moment.Velma didn’t think Caleb would have such a twisted sense of humor. For the first time, she had a positive impression on him. But, of course, she did not show it in front of Ben.“You should apologize to him,” Velma said.“I will,” Caleb said.“Hmph,” Ben snorted with pride.“But only if he apologizes to me first for calling me

In the time Caleb took to reach the restaurant, Velma received three calls from three different men.She told them she was at a restaurant and had all three of them send money to her.“These idiots only sent me thirty dollars each, even though I told them I came here with my kids,” Velma snorted. She received ninety dollars in total and still wasn’t happy about it in the slightest.“Mm?” She looked at Caleb. “What? Why are you looking at me? Are you jealous that I get paid by my boyfriends?”“We’ve arrived,” he replied.“Oh…”The kids got out first, but Velma didn’t. She was looking at Caleb. “You don’t have to sweat, Caleb. No one expects a Brokie like you to pay. I don’t, either. So, don’t worry. The bill is on me.”Caleb frowned a little. “No. I’ll pay,” he said reluctantly, not because he wanted to pay for her meals but because of the system’s condition. And then Caleb got out of the car.Velma slightly chuckled. “Men are so easy to manipulate. You just rub their eyes a little, an

“What’s the restaurant name?” Caleb asked.“Backfire,” Velma said.“That’s like five miles from here.”“Yeah. So?”“Nothing,” Caleb knew better than arguing with this woman.“Uncle,” the little girl looked at Caleb. “How much do you earn in a week?”“I don’t get paid weekly. I have a proper job. I get paid monthly,” Caleb said.“How much?”“Enough,” he replied.Caleb saw a woman ahead, asking the passing cars for lift. But nobody stopped for her. However, when she saw Caleb’s car, she didn’t even bother asking for a lift.It hurt Caleb’s pride a little.“Stop. That’s my friend,” Velma said.“Huh?” Caleb stopped the car. “We can’t let her in. Did you look at her size? The car would flip over if she sits in the back.”“C’mon, she’s probably the same weight as you.”“No. She’s at least fifty pounds heavier than me,” Caleb quickly retorted.“Let me just walk with her for a minute,” Velma said.Caleb reluctantly reversed the car and stopped by the obese lady standing on the road.Velma ste
