Liam’s POV

“Ryan killed someone.”

The words Ryan killed someone was all I could think about after the call ended.

I stared at my phone, gripping it so tight it threatened to break.

Could it be true?

I pictured him in my gut. Ryan was not someone who was capable of doing such a thing. He might have been a bully in school, but can he be ruthless, a murder?

That was a whole different level.

I knew Ryan was not someone I can handle. This was a whole new level and I knew I had to be careful. I glanced at the screen and the document in front of me. I gently rubbed my temple. I grabbed my phone immediately and called Charles.

“How did you get all of this?” I asked over the phone, my voice barely above a whisper.

There was silence on the other end for a moment before Charles sighed. “Liam, you’re not ready for this.”

My grip on the phone tightened. “You think I wasn’t ready when he humiliated me? When he stole Melissa and made my life hell? I don’t care what it is, Charles. Tell me.”

Charles exhaled sharply. “Fine. But not over the phone. Meet me at the usual place.”

The line went dead.

I ran a hand through my hair, my mind racing. I hated going late in the night, and I often wonder why Charles doesn't want to be seen. He was always picking hideous places away from prying eyes and I was beginning to wonder why.

But right now, nothing mattered. All I cared about was getting to know the secret Ryan is hiding. I now know why most of the students feared him and why he was more like a kingpin inside the university ground.

A drug baron.

A murderer.

Ryan was a legend and not some amateur kid on the campus. Even the lecturers and the Dean feared him. If I was going to take Ryan head on then I need all the leverages I can get on him.

Ryan Blackwood—a murderer?

It almost sounded impossible but then, with the evidence out there to see, what was not to believe.

It sounded impossible.

But then again, I had seen what kind of person he really was.

And if this was true, I was holding something much bigger than just a simple school rivalry.

[ Later That Night ]

The usual place was an old parking lot behind Crestwood University, barely used except for the occasional meet-ups Charles and I had.

When I arrived, Charles was already there, leaning against his car, a cigarette between his fingers.

“About time,” he muttered, flicking the cigarette to the ground and crushing it under his shoe. "I don't think I can keep doing this anymore, Liam. Ryan's father is starting to know someone is digging up dirty about his son. What do you think will happen when he finally finds out?"

"Are you saying that you cannot help me anymore?" I asked with a lump in my throat. " Just give me the name of the student in question and let me handle the rest."

"I have been useful to you, Liam. But giving you the name comes with a price." Charles looked at me

I still don't know what happened.

Some few weeks ago, he was more than happy to give me what I needed and now, he was making things more difficult. I knew if I was going to beat Ryan Blackwood then I needed to top my games.

Money was not everything.

Power was.

"So, what is it that you want from me?" I asked with my eyebrows slightly raised.

"Your shares. Give that to me and I will help you in your cause against Ryan," Charles said, leaning against his car.

"Isn't that why you are doing all of this? And of course to get your girlfriend back."

"And why would I do that?" I shot blazer out of my eyes.

"Because without me, the boards are going to eat you alive, Liam. Do you honestly think you stand a chance against Ryan on your own? I can be your rock, I can protect you, but it comes with a price. Your shares and you can have the name of the student in question." Charles flicked his gaze back to me

I narrowed my eyes at Charles, my gaze fixed on him. "You want my shares?" I asked with a steady breath.

Ever since I was introduced to my father's properties, Charles has been more than willing to help me solve my problems, but at what cost?

I guess this was why he had been so good to me. He wanted something in return and not just anything. He wanted my shares.

Charles smirked. "Consider it an investment in your future, Liam. You want to take Ryan down? You need me. Do you think you can take him down on your own?”

I let out a dry chuckle, shaking my head. "You're insane if you think I'd just hand over my shares to you."

Charles pushed off his car, taking a slow step forward. "Then enjoy losing. Because without this name, you have nothing. Ryan will keep walking over you, and Melissa? She’ll never see you as more than a loser."

The words were painful and hurting me but I knew I would be a fool to let go of my inheritance which was the only thing I was having at the moment to fight Ryan.

But at the same time, I hated that he was right.

I hated that I needed him.

"Give me a day," I said, my voice low. "I'll think about it."

Charles shrugged. "Suit yourself. But don’t take too long, Liam. Ryan isn’t the type to sit back and wait for his enemies to make a move."

I turned to leave, my mind clouded with frustration.

I needed that name.

But giving Charles my shares? That was a risk I wasn’t sure I could afford.

As I reached my car, my phone buzzed and a notification came up. I looked at it and my face went pale.

  • CHAPTER 123

Liam's POV“What do you want, Tobias?” I repeatedly asked. My voice was low and serious. The press conference, the reporters, and the idea that I was chasing some kind of strange family revenge—it all disappeared from my mind. Right now, the only thing that mattered was the man standing in front of me.Tobias moved a little, and that sad look came back into his eyes. I had seen that look before, whenever he talked about his dead family. The pain was so strong, you could almost feel it. He looked around the room before his eyes came back to mine.“I don't care what you believe, Liam,” he said, his voice tight. “But I didn’t do it. I didn’t kill my family, even though that’s what they say.”I looked at him, trying to see if he was lying. The room suddenly felt small. His words felt heavy. I thought about all the news stories, the people talking, the name that had followed me around for years.Tobias Carter, the man who killed his own family. But looking at him now, seeing how sad he loo

  • CHAPTER 122

Liam's POVRyan’s words from last night were still stuck in my head. Tobias didn’t do it? I kept hearing it over and over. Didn’t do what? He didn’t kill my family? That couldn’t be true. There was evidence, a trial, a conviction. It was all part of Carter Enterprises’ history—a dark chapter that ruined my family’s name.I stared out my office window. The city looked busy and crowded, just like the mess in my head. I tried to focus on work, but I couldn’t.My brain felt foggy. The numbers didn’t make sense, the reports all blurred together, and the plans I had carefully made seemed to disappear. Finally, I pushed my chair back. The leather squeaked under me.“Coffee,” I said quietly. Maybe caffeine could help me think straight. The coffee corner was near the elevators, a small space where people chatted quietly. I poured a cup.The smell helped a little. I took a sip—it burned my tongue, but it made me feel more awake. Just then, Anna, my secretary, walked over.“Liam,” she said kindl

  • CHAPTER 131

Liam's POVThe sound of sirens was getting louder but I stood in the middle of the mess, breathing in all the fumes of our strife and waiting patiently. My body still felt shaky after the gunfight, but the rush of energy was fading. I felt tired now. Really tired. Locke, Sarah, and Hans had left in the van, taking the kids to a safe place. I was all alone, just standing and waiting. The first police car stopped quickly with its lights shining through the night. Two more cars arrived right after. Police officers jumped out with their guns up and ready.“Stop right there! Hands up!” one of them shouted.I slowly raised my hands, showing them I had nothing to hide and I turned to face them. “My name is Liam Carter. There’s been something really bad going on here.”The officer who spoke walked toward me carefully. “We got calls about explosions and gunshots. What happened here, kid?”“It was William Blackwood,” I said, trying to sound calm. “He’s behind an illegal business. He’s been s

Liam's POV“Drop your weapons! Now! Hands where we can see them!”The loud shouts cut through the air.Hans looked at me. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking, but we both knew—this was the end. No way out.“Do it, Liam,” he said quietly. “No point in dying for nothing.”My hands were shaking as I slowly put the gun down. It made a loud sound when it hit the concrete floor. Hans did the same, moving carefully.“Alright, slowly,” one of Blackwood’s men said. He was big, with a thick neck. “Turn around. Hands behind your head.”We turned and faced the wall. The rough bricks touched my forehead. I could feel many eyes watching us from behind. We were caught. Blackwood had won.I heard the sound of handcuffs. I waited, scared, for them to lock around my wrists. Then everything exploded.A huge blast shook the building. I was thrown to the floor. Bricks and dust flew everywhere. My ears were ringing, and my head felt dizzy.Confusion followed. There were screams, shouts, and the sound of g

  • CHAPTER 129

Liam's POVWe pulled the unconscious man into a small hidden space so no one would see him, then we kept going. We found a quiet spot to talk to Sarah using our radios.“Sarah, we stopped a lab worker who almost called for help. No new info yet,” I said.“Got it. Be extra careful. I see more guards moving around your area,” Sarah replied.A cold fear hit me. Did they know we’re here?“Hans, we need to leave. This is getting too dangerous.” I said.“Not yet. We still haven’t found what we came for.” he replied.“And what is that, Hans? Proof that Blackwood is evil? We already have it! We need to go now, while we can!” I said angrily.“We’re looking for answers, Liam. We need to know why they’re doing this. What happened to Mason. I feel like we’re close to finding out,” Hans said, sounding sure. Before I could argue more, he pulled me deeper into the building. We walked down another hallway. It was colder, and the chemical smell was stronger. We passed more labs. Each one looked worse

  • CHAPTER 128

Liam's POVI held the Beretta tightly, but the cold metal didn’t help my sweaty hands feel better. This wasn’t my normal life.I was used to working with numbers, reading reports, maybe getting pizza at night – not sneaking into what might be a Blackwood hideout, pretending to be a soldier.“This is crazy, Hans,” I whispered. “I should be home in my apartment, going over the Walker Foundation’s papers. Not doing this…”“Not risking your life to stop criminals?” Hans answered, his voice sharp and serious. He moved like a shadow, focused on the mission. “This isn’t about your papers, Liam. This is about doing what’s right. It’s about those kids... and Mason.”“He got to you, didn’t he? Your old cop habits kicked in. I didn’t have a choice,” I said.I gave Hans a hard look, but deep down I knew he was right. Mason Wells had become the reason we were doing this. His empty look still haunted me. It reminded me how evil the Blackwoods really were.My earpiece crackled.“Liam, Hans, you’re c
