Leo woke up before the morning bell.

For a few seconds he just stared at the cracked ceiling above his bunk while the quiet sounds of the

prison slowly filled the air. Somewhere down the hallway someone was coughing. Another inmate was muttering in his sleep. Metal clanged in the distance as guards began unlocking other cell blocks.

Marcus shifted on the lower bunk and looked up, “You’re awake already?”

Leo rubbed his eyes. “Couldn’t sleep much.”

Marcus chuckled quietly. “That happens your first weeks here. Your brain is still trying to understand that this place is real.”

Leo climbed down from the bunk and stretched his shoulders.“It’s real,” he said calmly. “I accepted that already.”

Marcus watched him carefully, “You’re adjusting faster than most people.”

“You don’t survive in my world by being slow,” Leo walked to the bars and looked out at the hallway.

Marcus smiled slightly. “Your world is gone, Leo.”

Leo didn’t respond immediately, after a moment he said quietly, “Then I’ll build a new one.”

Marcus studied him for a second but said nothing.

The bell rang loudly through the block.

“Breakfast!” a guard shouted.

Cells began opening one by one and prisoners stepped out into the hallway.

Marcus stood up. “Come on. If you move too slow, the good food disappears.”

Leo raised an eyebrow. “There’s good food here?”

Marcus laughed. “You’ll see.”

They walked with the others toward the cafeteria.

As soon as Leo stepped inside, he could feel the tension in the room.

Prison cafeterias were like battlefields.

Groups of inmates sat at different tables, each one belonging to a different gang or alliance. Some tables were quiet. Others were loud and aggressive.

Marcus leaned slightly closer to Leo, “See that table?” he said quietly.

Leo followed his gaze.

Dante was sitting at the center of a large group of inmates. The big man was laughing while several others talked around him.

“That’s Dante’s crew,” Marcus explained. “Most of the block answers to him.”

Leo nodded slowly, “I figured.”

Marcus grabbed a tray and began moving down the line.

“Don’t stare too much,” he warned. “People don’t like being watched.”

Leo grabbed his own tray,“I’m not staring,” he said calmly. “I’m studying.”

Marcus sighed. “That’s what worries me.”

They sat at a small empty table near the wall.

Leo quietly ate his food while observing the room. Every movement meant something. Who sat with who. Who stood when someone important entered. Who lowered their voice when certain men walked by. It was exactly like the mafia world outside, different players, same rules.

Halfway through the meal, Tony appeared beside their table.

“Well look who it is,” Tony said with a grin. “The rich boy survived another night.”

Marcus rolled his eyes.

“Tony, don’t you have somewhere else to bother people?”

Tony ignored him and looked at Leo.

“You handled Dante pretty well yesterday.”

Leo kept eating.

“I just answered his question.”

Tony laughed, “Most people don’t answer Dante like that.”

“Most people are scared,” Leo finally looked up.

“You’re not?” Tony leaned against the table.

Leo shrugged, “Fear is useful.”

Tony raised an eyebrow, “How?”

Leo wiped his mouth with a napkin, “If you understand fear, you understand control.”

Tony stared at him for a second, “Yeah… you’re definitely not normal.”

Marcus groaned quietly. “Tony, what do you want?”

Tony lowered his voice,“There’s going to be a problem today.”

Leo looked at him calmly. “What kind of problem?”

Tony leaned closer, “Two gangs are about to go at each other in the yard.”

Marcus frowned. “Why?”

“Contraband deal gone bad,” Tony replied. “Someone stole a shipment of cigarettes and phones.”

Leo tilted his head slightly, “Who stole it?”

“That’s the funny part. Nobody knows,” Tony smiled.

“So everyone is blaming everyone,” Leo’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“Exactly,” Tony said.

Marcus sighed. “Great. Another riot.”

Tony looked at Leo again, “You should stay out of the yard today.”

Leo finished his food, “Why?”

“When fights start, new guys usually get caught in the middle,” Tony shrugged.

Leo stood up and picked up his tray, “I’ll take my chances.”

Tony watched him walk away, “That guy is crazy,” he muttered.

Marcus followed Leo out of the cafeteria.

“You should listen sometimes,” Marcus said quietly. “Tony may be annoying, but he’s not stupid.”

“I know,” Leo continued walking.

“Then why go to the yard?”

Leo glanced at him, “Because sometimes chaos is useful.”

Marcus stopped walking, I don’t like the sound of that.”

Leo gave him a small smile, “You will.”

The prison yard was already crowded. Groups of inmates were gathered everywhere, but the atmosphere felt different today. People were tense. Watching. Waiting.

Marcus walked beside Leo nervously, “Something’s definitely going to happen.”

Leo nodded, “I know.”

They sat on a bench near the fence. Across the yard, two groups of inmates were glaring at each other. One group was led by a muscular man named Rico while the other was led by a tall, thin inmate called Vargas.

Marcus leaned closer, “That’s the problem,” he whispered.

Leo studied both groups carefully, “How long have they hated each other?”

“Months,” Marcus said. “But the stolen shipment made things worse.”

Leo watched as Rico stood up and walked toward Vargas. The yard slowly grew quiet.

Rico pointed a finger, “You think I’m stupid?” he shouted.

Vargas stood up slowly, “I didn’t steal your shipment.”

“Then where is it?” Rico demanded.

Vargas shrugged, “Maybe someone smarter than you took it.”

Several inmates laughed. Rico’s face turned red, “You’re dead.”

Suddenly he charged forward. The fight exploded instantly. Men started swinging fists, throwing punches, shouting.

Marcus stood up. “Here we go.”

Leo stayed seated. Marcus looked at him, “You’re not moving?”

“Not yet,” Leo shook his head.

In the middle of the chaos, one inmate slipped and fell near Leo’s bench. Another man rushed toward him with a metal tray raised like a weapon. Leo moved before Marcus could react. He stepped forward and grabbed the attacker’s arm, the man froze in surprise. Leo twisted his wrist sharply.

The tray clattered to the ground, the attacker groaned in pain, Leo pushed him back.

“Pick a fair fight,” Leo said calmly.

The fallen inmate stared at him in shock, “Thanks,” he muttered.

Marcus grabbed Leo’s arm, “What are you doing?”

Leo stepped back, “Helping.”

But that small moment didn’t go unnoticed. Several inmates nearby had stopped fighting to watch. Even Dante, standing near the far side of the yard, was staring.

The guards rushed in a few seconds later, blowing whistles.

“Break it up!”

The fight slowly died down, inmates were pushed back toward the walls.

Marcus sighed in relief, “You’re lucky the guards came.”

Leo shrugged, “Luck had nothing to do with it.”

The inmate Leo had helped approached him carefully, he was younger than most prisoners, with nervous eyes.

“Hey,” he said quietly. “You didn’t have to do that.”

Leo shrugged again, “You were about to get your head smashed.”

The young inmate nodded gratefully, “My name’s Tyler.”

Leo shook his hand, “Leo.”

Tyler looked around nervously, “You just made a lot of people notice you.”

Marcus groaned again, “Yeah, that’s exactly what we didn’t want.”

Tyler leaned closer to Leo, “There’s something you should know.”

Leo raised an eyebrow, “What?”

Tyler glanced around before whispering, “The shipment that started that fight… I know who stole it.”

Marcus blinked.

“You’re serious?” Tyler nodded.

Leo crossed his arms, “Who?”

Tyler swallowed nervously, “Dante’s crew.”

Marcus’s eyes widened, “You’re kidding.”

Tyler shook his head, “I overheard them talking last night.”

Leo looked across the yard at Dante. The big man was still watching him.

Leo’s mind started working quickly, Interesting...Very interesting.

Tyler leaned closer again, “You shouldn’t trust anyone here.”

“I don’t," Leo smiled slightly.

Tyler lowered his voice even more, “But if you want to survive in Blackridge…," Leo looked at him.

Tyler whispered, “You either play the game to win…”

Leo’s eyes hardened, “Or?”

Tyler finished quietly, “…or you become king.”

Leo slowly looked back across the yard. Dante was still staring at him.

For the first time since entering prison, Leo felt something new rising inside him.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Opportunity.

And far away, in a luxurious office downtown, Luca DeLuca unknowingly poured himself a glass of whiskey.

Completely unaware that inside Blackridge Prison…his greatest mistake was already beginning to grow.

In here you’ve got a mattress and a toilet.”Leo opened his mouth to reply, but at that moment a guard’s voice echoed through the hallway.“Mail call!”Several inmates stepped toward their cell doors. He had been here for a few days now, just enough time to start observing, to start understanding the game he would need to play in order to survive.Everything inside the prison had its own rules, its own hierarchy. And right now, Leo was at the bottom of it.The guards, dressed in dark blue uniforms, patrolled the yards and hallways with an air of disinterest, as if they were used to the noise, the violence, the chaos. They didn’t care about the inmates unless they caused trouble. And that, Leo quickly learned, was the first rule. Trouble meant attention. Attention meant punishment. But Leo wasn’t interested in attracting attention. Not yet. He was watching. He was learning.“Hey, new guy!” someone shouted from across the yard. Leo turned his head slowly.A tall man with tattoos crawling up
