Chapter 16:

Those words stuck the Chen family like it was a blessing from Buddha. Old Lady Chen’s eyes lighten up with greed and delight.

“Odessa,” she called out sharply. “Did you hear what Young Master Wang said? You must treat him well in the future!”

Elias immediately chirped in.

“Exactly. Young Master Wang has come over here personally to meet you, you should be thanking him.”

Odessa frowned at her family’s behavior. “What should I be thankful to him for?”

Old Lady’s Chen expression turned sour. “What do you mean?! Do you think women from ordinary families can even dream of standing before Young Master Wang? Yet he lowered himself to come here personally.”

Aurelius nodded in agreement. “Your grandmother is right. Don’t be foolish, Odessa.”

He stepped forward, paving a way for Jake to sit at that table, gesturing at the chair he had set up for him, he said with a patronising smile.

“Young Master Wang, please don’t misunderstand. Odessa is still young and doesn’t understand what an honour this is. Please have a seat.”

“Yes, please have a seat, Young Master Wang,” the other members of the Chen family chimed in.

“I wasn’t speaking to you,” Jake said to him with a blank expression.

Aurelius’ smile froze instantly. For a junior to speak to an elder in such a manner was a taboo but he forced out a laugh.

“Haha… of course.”

Jake’s gaze lazily rested on Odessa. “I only came here for you as for the rest, I have no interest in them but since they insist on me sitting, I have no choice but to accept the Chen family’s hospitality.”

Old Lady Chen laughed awkwardly.

“Young Master Wang is really straightforward. I like straightforward young people.”

Jake gave no response, merely turning to one of his bodyguards beside him.

“Wipe it.”

The bodyguard took out a white handkerchief and carefully wiped the chair from top to bottom. Only then did Jake sit.

The entire banquet hall watched in a pin-drop, uncomfortable silence.

“Young Master Wang is truly cautious,” Elias commented with a wide smile.

“Cautious?” Jake repeated with a raised brow. “I simply don’t enjoy dirty surroundings.”

A faint smile appeared on his face.

The Chen family members exchanged unpleasant glances. No one knew whether Jake was referring to the chair or to them.

Jake leisurely crossed one leg over the other while his eyes were fixed on Odessa.

“Miss Chen, I have heard a lot about your accomplishments but do you really want to waste your youth with a man like that?”

His eyes briefly glanced at Riven, who had picked up another dish to eat.

“He seems to have made it a personal conquest to finish everything on his table,” he continued with unmasked disgust. “You deserve better and I can give that.”

“I’m not interested,” Odessa responded firmly.

The smile on Jake’s face vanished immediately. His eyes almost widening in disbelief.

“You refuse me?”

“Mr. Wang, you have come up here to court me despite seeing that I’m married and you have also insulted my husband countless times. If I were you, I would retain a little bit of my dignity and leave.”

The banquet hall was sent into an uproar by Odessa’s words. Several guests instinctively held their breaths.

Not only had she refused him, she had also insulted him publicly!

“Odessa!” Old Lady Chen yelled frantically that her frail body shook with anger and rage. “What nonsense are you sprouting out? Apologize this minute!”

Alyssa, who had been silent, spoke immediately. In her mind, if Odessa were to insult Young Master Wang, he would no longer show interest in the Chen family and she wouldn't be the heiress of the Wang family!

“Don’t ruin this opportunity for the Chen family, Odessa. You have embarrassed this family enough, do you really want to offend Young Master Wang who is just trying to make things better for you?”

She made her tone sound patronising as possible making Odessa stare at her with suspicion.

“If you want to ruin things for yourself, don’t ruin it for others!”
