CHAPTER 1: THE PENDANT

“At 10 o’clock, Daniel was on the hospital bed with a frown on his face thinking about his life.

A young guy in his early twenties walked into the room with a document in his hand.

This useless guy had been freeloading off the Hughes family for five years, and he was more prone to failure than success. Finally, he could get lost.

"A divorce agreement?"

Daniel felt like there was a bell ringing in his head, and he felt dizzy. He covered his forehead and looked at his brother-in-law, confused.

"My sister has been noticed by Samuel from the Maclean family. You'd better be sensible and not cause any trouble. If there's another drunk driving incident, your luck may not be so good next time."

Joseph threatened and half-advised. "And

only Samuel is worthy of my sister. If you love her, let her go!"

He already hated his brother-in-law, who was neither from a wealthy family nor had money himself, and wished his sister could divorce him immediately!

He didn't understand whether his

grandfather was confused or not, to marry his beautiful sister to such a useless guy! And his sister, despite everyone's anger about her not getting married to him, actually agreed!

As a son-in-law, Daniel had been living a useless life in the Hughes family for five years!

During these five years, Sophia and their family had become a laughingstock!

Thinking of this, he looked at Daniel with even more contempt.

"You want me to divorce my wife, does Sophia know about this?"

Daniel felt a little better and took the divorce

agreement from Joseph's hand. Everything on it was already filled out, except for two signatures.

"Hmph!

Of course, my sister knows! Do you think she would have married a useless person like you for five years if it weren't for Grandpa's intervention?" Joseph's eyes rolled and he said without hesitation. But Daniel was so insightful that he calmly said, "You can bring it back after Sophia signs it"

After speaking, he seemed to be about to hand the agreement back, but suddenly, as if he had lost his grip, he tore the paper in half.

"Ah, I still feel a little dizzy," he looked a little embarrassed at Joseph, "why don't you bring me the other one?"

"Daniel!"

Joseph was furious, his eyes glaring at him like flames,

"Did you just do that on purpose!?"

"How did you know?"

Daniel's expression was like that of someone who had suddenly become intelligent, making Joseph's blood boil.

"You useless fool! Why do you insist on staying in our Hughes family?"

He wished he could smash Daniel's head

and also hated the driver for not being more ruthless!

"Who are you calling a fool!?"

The door suddenly opened, and a girl with a curvaceous figure and soft black hair walked in, looking at him with an unfriendly expression.

She is Sophia, Daniel’s wife. Under the glare of her eyes, Joseph’s spirit wilted. He spent money extravagantly, and if it weren't for Sophia's frequent financial support, he would have been homeless long ago. That's why he was somewhat afraid of her.

"If I had known, I wouldn't have let you come to visit.

Go back."

Sophia shook her head lightly, her cold face showing a hint of indifference. "Also, tell Samuel Maclean that I'm already married and he should stop paying attention to me."

"Sophia!"

Joseph became anxious and pointed at Daniel lying on the hospital bed. "What's good about this idiotic person? Why won't you let him go? Do you know people are laughing at our family now?" As he spoke, he glared at Daniel as if he wanted to tear him apart.

"Laughing at us?"

Sophia’s face remained calm as she asked, "Who dares to laugh at our family in Sunshine City now? Except for the Maclean family, who dares to laugh at me? Are you telling me that Samuel often laughs at me?"

She inherited the company left by her

parents and went through countless hardships, eventually making the company thrive. With this opportunity, the Hughes family also rose to become a prestigious family in Sunshine City, only slightly inferior to the old Maclean family.

Given time, even the Maclean family would be under her feet!

"Sophia!"

Joseph was overwhelmed by her aura. Opinions about this cousin varied, but everyone was somewhat in awe of her. He dared not argue with Sophia and could only turn his attention to Daniel, hoping that he would recognize the situation and take the initiative to ask for a divorce.

Everyone believed that the reason why Sophia refused to initiate a divorce was because this marriage was arranged by her beloved grandfather.

But as they say, when a person dies, it's like a lamp going out. Grandfather has been gone for five years, shouldn't she let go by now?

"You can leave, " Sophia said coldly, twisting open the thermos she brought with her. Inside was the chicken soup she had personally made, which was now fragrant and delicious.

"Cousin!

Why are you protecting this foolish person?" Joseph’s eyes turned red. Apart from Grandfather, this was the first time Sophia had voluntarily cooked for someone else!

"What useless person? He's my husband!" Sophia looked at him coldly. Joseph felt a chill run down his spine. He didn't understand, was it worth it to protect this useless person?

Samuel from the Maclean family was so much better than this useless person! He held back his anger and left dejectedly.

At that moment, Sophia’s voice came from behind:

"Also, tell Samuel and the others not to come to the hospital. I'm afraid that if they come, his recovery will be even slower."

"Hmph!"

Joseph dared not argue and could only slam the door to express his hatred.

"Thank you, Sophia," Daniel said, feeling relieved. He knew that his wife didn't care for him, which was normal. She was born as the beloved daughter of the Hughes family. After graduating from the university, she joined her family’s company and worked hard to turn it around. Eventually, she succeeded in saving the company and it began to thrive.

As for him, he was just a useless person with no family.

"It's okay, you can drink the soup first," Sophia said calmly, her expression still indifferent.

After all, he had saved her grandfather before he died, so it was only natural for her to marry him to repay the debt of gratitude.

But thinking about the sneers and ridicule behind her back for the past five years, she was not in a good mood.

"Well, it's delicious," Daniel said, giving her face.

Sophia was very gentle and attentive.

Despite the large bowl of soup, there was only chicken soup and no bones or meat, probably because she was afraid that he might have some problems after waking up.

"If you like it, drink more," Sophia said with a hint of pride on her face, but it quickly disappeared. "Daniel, do you know who caused the car accident last night?"

"Who caused it?"

Sophia seemed a little confused. "Wasn't it a drunk driver?"

Sophia expression slightly changed when she saw that he didn't even have a hint of suspicion. Maybe it was better this way. She didn't say much and just watched Daniel drink the soup quietly.

"It's delicious," Daniel said, noticing that Sophia’s cheeks were slightly red.

"Sophia, do you want to have some too?"

Sophia was slightly stunned. Perhaps this was the only thing that her husband was worth praising for - his thoughtfulness.

However, she still shook her head gently. "| already ate outside. This chicken soup was specially stewed for you with some medicinal herbs added. Please try to finish it."

Without waiting for Daniel's response, she got up and said, "I will go and ask the doctor concerning your health though he said you might undergo surgery.

"Okay, take care," Daniel said as he watched her disappear.

His smiling face suddenly turned dark. He didn't expect Samuel Maclean to be so audacious as to try to kill him after a quarrel.

Fortunately, the amulet he had since childhood had protected him from the harm.

Otherwise, he wouldn't have appeared in the hospital unscathed.

After all, that was a large truck used to transport stones!

"There are still two more times."

He took out a pendant from his pocket. Inside was a pentagram with a countdown, and three of its points had already dimmed. If one didn't pay attention, it looked like it had disappeared.

Since he was fine this time, it served the Maclean family right if they got into trouble!
