Jenny's fingers moved rapidly as she composed the post, her smile growing wider and more vicious with each word.

@JennyMorrisonOfficial: Heartbroken tonight. My daughter's ex-fiancé, who we welcomed into our home and supported for THREE YEARS, has stolen a $500,000 ruby necklace from us. We gave him everything—shelter, food, money, love—and this is how he repays our generosity. Be careful who you trust. Some people are just parasites waiting to strike. #Betrayed #ThiefInTheNight #TrustNoOne

She attached a photo of the empty safe, the velvet box that should have held the necklace lying open and abandoned.

"There," Jenny said with savage satisfaction, hitting post. "Let's see how that worthless rat likes being exposed to the world."

Charlie watched the post go live, the likes and comments already starting to pour in, and allowed himself the smallest of smiles. "I'm sure he'll come crawling back soon," he said softly. "Begging for mercy."

Jenny laughed, sharp and cruel. "He'd better. Because I'm just getting started."

The Spencer estate sat on the outskirts of the city, hidden behind gates and old trees, a sprawling mansion that spoke of old money and older power. Ethan hadn't seen it in three years, but as the car pulled up the long driveway, he felt something unexpected settle in his chest—not quite relief, not quite regret. Something in between.

Harvey said nothing as they entered, just placed a hand briefly on Ethan's shoulder—a gesture that said more than words could.

The foyer was exactly as Ethan remembered: marble floors, high ceilings, artwork that belonged in museums. And standing at the base of the grand staircase, arms crossed and face lit with barely contained emotion, was Jolie.

She was twenty-six, slim and elegant in designer casual wear, her dark hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail. Not his biological sister—Harvey and his wife had adopted her from an orphanage when she was seven—but family nonetheless. More than family. She'd been his closest confidant, his partner in crime, his fiercest defender.

And when he'd left to chase love, she'd taken over the business operations without complaint.

"Ethan," Jolie breathed, and then she was moving, crossing the foyer in quick strides and pulling him into a fierce embrace.

Ethan held her tightly, guilt pressing against his ribs. "I'm sorry," he said quietly. "I'm so sorry, Jolie. I left you with everything—"

"Stop." Jolie pulled back, gripping his shoulders and looking him directly in the eyes. "You have nothing to apologize for. You needed to live your own life, make your own choices. I understood that then, and I understand it now."

"I wasted three years."

"You learned something," Jolie corrected gently. "That's not a waste. That's education." She smiled, though there was sadness in it. "A painful one, maybe. But necessary."

Harvey had disappeared somewhere into the house, giving them space. Ethan let Jolie guide him into the sitting room, where she poured them both drinks and settled onto the couch beside him.

"So," she said, studying his face carefully. "What now?"

"Now I come back," Ethan said simply. "I start learning the business properly. I become the heir Father always wanted me to be."

Jolie nodded slowly. "Good. But there's no rush." She leaned forward, her expression brightening slightly. "I've already made arrangements. The Global Business Institute—you remember it?"

Ethan's eyebrows rose. GBI was the top business school in the world, producing CEOs and industry leaders with ruthless efficiency. He'd done his undergraduate there, graduated top of his class, and been offered a direct path to their elite graduate program.

He'd turned it down to stay with Helen.

"You're enrolled," Jolie continued. "Graduate program, starting next semester. You'll complete your MBA, network with the right people, build the foundation you need. And then..." She smiled. "Then you take your place properly."

Ethan felt something tighten in his chest—gratitude, shame, determination all tangled together. "Jolie, I don't know what to say."

"Say you'll stop apologizing and start moving forward." She squeezed his hand. "We've waited three years, Ethan. We can wait a little longer to do this right."

He nodded, unable to speak past the emotion lodged in his throat.

Before either of them could say more, Ethan's phone rang, shrill and urgent in the quiet room. He glanced at the screen and frowned. Julian—a friend he'd met two years ago, back when he'd been carefully hiding his identity, trying to live as a normal person. Julian worked in finance, sharp and loyal, one of the few genuine relationships Ethan had built outside the Morrison orbit.

"Sorry," Ethan muttered to Jolie, accepting the call. "Julian? What's—"

"What the hell happened?" Julian's voice exploded through the speaker, breathless and panicked. "Ethan, you need to get online right now. You're being accused of theft—a five-hundred-thousand-dollar jewelry theft! It's everywhere!"

Ethan went very still. "What?"

"Jenny Morrison posted about it. She's got like fifty thousand followers and the post is going viral. She's saying you stole a ruby necklace from Helen's safe before you left tonight."

The words landed like blows, each one harder than the last.

Jolie's expression had shifted immediately, her eyes sharp and dangerous. "Put it on speaker," she said quietly.

Ethan did.

Julian's voice filled the room, tight with worry. "Man, people are tearing you apart in the comments. They're calling you every name in the book—thief, parasite, con artist. Jenny's painting you as some kind of gold-digger who planned this from the beginning. You need to respond, you need to defend yourself, you need to—"

"I didn't take anything," Ethan said, his voice flat and cold.

"I know that! But they don't! And unless you say something, this is going to destroy you!"

Jolie was already pulling out her own phone, her fingers flying across the screen. Her face darkened with each passing second as she read.

"That vicious bitch," she whispered.

"This is Helen Morrison," Helen said, trying to control the tremor in her voice. "I have urgent information for Jolie Spencer regarding a family matter. A security matter. It concerns Ethan Carter and it can't wait."There was a long pause. Helen held her breath, terrified she'd be dismissed. Finally: "Please wait."Fifteen minutes passed. Twenty. Helen paced beside her car like a caged animal, rehearsing what she'd say, organizing her evidence, building her case in her mind.Charlie and Jenny waited inside the vehicle, growing increasingly doubtful."Helen, maybe we should—" Jenny started."No," Helen cut her off. "We're doing this."Finally, the gates swung open with silent, expensive precision.Helen rushed back to the car and drove through grounds that made her own villa look like a cottage. Manicured lawns, elegant lighting, sculptures that were probably worth more than her entire company. Her determination wavered slightly as the sheer scale of wealth surrounded her.A butler me

Outside the hotel, Helen and Jenny were unceremoniously deposited on the curb like discarded garbage. The cold night air hit them immediately, making Helen's tear-streaked face sting. Her mascara had run in dark rivulets down her cheeks, her hair was disheveled from struggling with security, and her expensive dress was rumpled.Charlie, who'd been waiting in the freezing cold for hours, rushed over the moment he saw them being escorted out."What happened?" he demanded, his eyes wide with alarm. "I saw security escorting you out—what the hell did you do?"Helen was trembling with rage and humiliation, her entire body shaking. "Ethan," she spat the name like poison. "That's what happened. That worthless parasite somehow convinced them he belongs there. Claimed he was personally invited by the Spencer family. It's all lies, Charlie. He's manipulating everyone, just like he manipulated me."Charlie's eyes narrowed, his mind racing through calculations. He'd assumed Ethan was truly powerl

  • CHAPTER 70

Helen's mind raced frantically, grasping for any explanation that would make sense of the impossible situation unfolding around her. The security guards had her by the arms, the crowd was staring, and Patricia Moore's cold expression offered no mercy."There must be a mistake," Helen said loudly, her voice taking on a desperate edge that made several nearby guests wince. "I know Ethan—I was engaged to him for THREE YEARS! He's a nobody! A freeloader with no money, no connections, no prospects!"She pulled against the security guards' grip, trying to face Patricia directly. "There's no way the Spencer family would personally invite someone like him unless—"Helen stopped abruptly, a new theory forming in her panicked mind, and her expression shifted to something almost triumphant."Unless he's using Jolie Spencer's name!" Helen's voice rose with renewed confidence. "That's it! That's what happened! He's manipulating her, using her influence to get into events like this! She probably ha

A murmur rippled through the crowd—confusion, surprise, growing scandal."Furthermore," Patricia said, her tone becoming colder, "the manner in which these accusations were made—loudly, publicly, and with clear intent to humiliate and cause harm to an invited guest's reputation—violated this event's code of conduct in the most egregious way possible."Several people turned to look at Helen, whose face was draining of color."I have contacted the Spencer family's office to inform them of this incident," Patricia continued. "They have reviewed the situation and requested that the two individuals who made these false claims be removed from the premises immediately and permanently banned from all future Spencer-affiliated events."The crowd's murmur became a buzz of shocked whispers.Jenny's face transformed from smug satisfaction to horrified understanding in the span of seconds. Patricia Moore led Ethan and Susan down a quiet corridor away from the ballroom, their footsteps muffled by expensive carpet. Susan was still protesting vehemently, her voice tight with frustration."This is absolutely ridiculous! Ethan is a legitimate guest! If you would just listen for one second—""Ma'am, please," Patricia said firmly but not unkindly. "I'm following protocol. We'll verify everything in the office."They entered a small administrative suite—elegant but functional, with a desk, computer, and several chairs. Patricia moved behind the desk and pulled up her tablet, fingers swiping across the screen to access the guest management system."Name, please?" she asked professionally.Ethan provided the pseudonym under which his invitation had been issued—not his full legal name with "Spencer" attached, but the alias his butler had arranged to maintain his low profile.Patricia typed it in, then frowned. Her fingers moved faster, typing again, searching different fields. The

The murmurs in the crowd grew louder, more agitated. People instinctively checked their belongings, and Patricia's expression set in firm, decisive lines."Sir," Patricia said to Ethan, her voice professional but clearly suspicious now, "I'm going to have to ask you to come with me while we verify your credentials. If you cannot provide legitimate proof of your invitation and authorization to attend this event, I'll have to ask you to leave."She paused, then added more seriously, "And depending on how you gained entry, we may need to involve security and potentially law enforcement."Helen practically glowed with triumphant satisfaction. Jenny was beaming, her smile vicious and vindicated.
