Chapter 1

"Welcome, everyone."

Thunderous applause erupted inside the grand ballroom of the Imperial Crown Hotel as Marcus Hale stepped onto the brightly lit stage. More than five hundred of the country's wealthiest investors, CEOs, politicians, and journalists filled the hall, their eyes fixed on the man many had begun calling the youngest financial genius of the decade.

Towering LED screens behind him displayed the logo of Hale Capital, the investment empire Marcus had built from nothing in just six years. Business magazines called him a visionary. Television stations competed for interviews with him. At only twenty-nine, his net worth had already crossed two billion dollars.

Tonight was supposed to be his greatest victory.

Standing at the front row was the woman he planned to marry in exactly sixty-three days.

Victoria Lane smiled proudly as she applauded him. Dressed in a shimmering silver gown, she looked every bit like the future wife of one of the country's richest men. Beside her stood Damien Cross, Marcus's childhood friend and the company's Chief Operating Officer. Damien raised his glass with a confident smile.

Marcus smiled back.

If there were two people in the world he trusted without question, they were standing together right now.

"Six years ago," Marcus began, his calm voice echoing across the ballroom, "I walked into a tiny rented office with one employee, two broken laptops, and enough money to keep the lights on for only three months. People laughed when I said Hale Capital would become one of the largest investment firms in the country."

A few people in the audience laughed softly, remembering those days.

Marcus continued with confidence. "Tonight, those same people are here to witness something even bigger. After eight months of negotiations, Hale Capital is proud to announce the acquisition of—"

The microphone suddenly went dead.

Marcus frowned.

He tapped it once.

Nothing.

The audience exchanged puzzled glances.

Then every screen behind him went black.

For three long seconds, silence swallowed the room.

The screens flickered back to life.

But the presentation Marcus had prepared was gone.

Instead, a bold red headline stretched across every display.

EMERGENCY BOARD ANNOUNCEMENT

The ballroom instantly fell silent.

Marcus slowly turned toward the giant screens, confusion written across his face.

"What is this?"

His voice no longer came through the speakers.

A familiar figure walked onto the stage holding another microphone.

Damien.

The smile on Marcus's face faded.

"What are you doing?"

Damien didn't answer immediately. Instead, he looked around the room with the confidence of a man who had rehearsed this moment a hundred times.

"Ladies and gentlemen," he said smoothly, "I sincerely apologize for interrupting tonight's celebration. Unfortunately, recent discoveries have made it impossible for this event to continue."

A murmur swept through the audience.

Marcus frowned. "Damien, stop joking."

"I'm not joking."

Those three words changed everything.

The giant screens switched again.

This time they displayed dozens of bank transactions, offshore accounts, and financial statements.

Every document carried Marcus Hale's name.

Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.

One reporter stood up immediately.

"My God... that's over eight hundred million dollars."

Another journalist hurriedly snapped photographs.

Marcus stared at the documents in disbelief.

They looked real but they were fake.

Every single one.

"What is this?" Marcus demanded, stepping toward Damien. "Who made these?"

Damien calmly took a step back.

"The evidence speaks for itself."

Marcus laughed, unable to believe what he was hearing.

"Evidence? You think anyone here is stupid enough to believe this?"

"I don't."

A deep voice interrupted him.

Marcus turned.

The chairman of Hale Capital's board slowly walked onto the stage with several directors following closely behind.

None of them looked at Marcus.

The old chairman adjusted his glasses before speaking into another microphone.

"Mr. Marcus Hale."

His formal tone immediately made Marcus uneasy.

"Following an emergency meeting held this evening, the Board of Directors has reached a unanimous decision."

Marcus blinked.

"Emergency meeting?"

The chairman ignored the question.

"Effective immediately, you are suspended as Chief Executive Officer pending a criminal investigation into allegations of fraud, money laundering, insider trading, and embezzlement."

The room exploded.

Reporters jumped to their feet.

Camera flashes burst from every direction.

Marcus couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"What are you talking about? I own this company!"

The chairman slowly lifted a folder.

"You did."

Marcus's heartbeat quickened.

The chairman opened the folder and projected another document onto the giant screens.

It showed Hale Capital's latest shareholder registry.

Marcus stared at it.

His breathing stopped.

His ownership...

Forty-nine percent.

He blinked repeatedly.

No.

That wasn't possible.

He personally owned fifty-one percent of the company.

Without a controlling share, the board could legally remove him.

"This is forged," Marcus said firmly. "I never sold my shares."

"You signed the transfer documents yourself."

"I never—"

His voice caught in his throat.

A memory flashed through his mind.

Three weeks ago...

Damien had insisted Marcus sign several merger documents before boarding a private jet for London.

Marcus hadn't even read them.

He trusted Damien completely.

His blood ran cold.

Damien smiled.

"You always did hate reading paperwork."

Marcus lunged forward and grabbed Damien by the collar.

"You son of a—"

Before he could finish, security guards rushed onto the stage and pulled him away.

The audience watched in stunned silence.

Some looked horrified.

Others looked entertained.

Several investors had already begun quietly leaving the ballroom.

Nobody wanted to be associated with a company under criminal investigation.

Marcus looked desperately toward the front row.

"Victoria."

She met his eyes.

For a brief second, hope flickered inside him.

She knew him better than anyone.

She knew he would never steal from his own company.

"Tell them."

His voice cracked for the first time.

"Tell them this is a lie."

Victoria slowly stood.

The ballroom fell silent again.

Marcus waited.

She walked toward the stage in her silver dress, every graceful step filling him with relief.

She was going to defend him.

She had to.

Instead...

She walked past Marcus.

Past the security guards.

Past the board members.

She stopped beside Damien.

Then, without saying a word...

She slipped her hand into Damien's.

Marcus froze.

The world around him seemed to stop.

Even the reporters lowered their cameras.

Nobody had expected that.

Victoria looked at Marcus with eyes completely devoid of warmth.

"I'm sorry."

Those two words struck harder than every accusation that had been thrown at him.

"I can't marry a man whose future has already collapsed."

Marcus stared at her in disbelief.

"What... are you saying?"

She gave a small, almost pitying smile.

"I've been with Damien for almost a year."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Marcus felt as though someone had ripped the air from his lungs.

His best friend.

His fiancée.

For an entire year behind his back.

Damien casually wrapped an arm around Victoria's waist, then smiled at Marcus with the satisfaction of a hunter admiring trapped prey.

"I told you before, Marcus."

"What?"

"The easiest vault to rob..."

He leaned close enough that only Marcus could hear the rest.

"...is the one whose owner trusts you."

Marcus's fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

He had spent six years building an empire.

Tonight...

It was all crumbling before his eyes.

And the worst was still to come.
