The massive mahogany double doors of the Vance Estate dining hall slammed inward, splitting straight down the middle under a wave of dark kinetic energy.
Splinters showered over the long, candlelit table where Arthur Vance sat with his eldest son, Julian, flanked by eight board members of Vance Corp. Fine crystal wine glasses shattered on the polished floor, spilled vintage Pinot Noir resembling freshly shed blood across the white marble.
"What in God's name—" Arthur Vance gasped, his fork clattering against his gold-rimmed china plate. The patriarch’s hair was silvered and sleek, his face etched with decades of cold authority, but his hands trembled as the heavy smoke cleared from the doorway.
Jaxith stepped through the threshold, his obsidian-black suit tailored to perfection, his shoes clicking against the shattered mahogany with absolute dominance. Beside him stood Elena Rostova, stunning in a dark silk dress, her gaze sharp enough to freeze the blood of every executive in the room.
"I see dinner was started without us," Jaxith said, his voice low, smooth, and laced with quiet malice. "Mind making room for the long-lost heir?"
Julian surged up from his seat, his chair flipping over backward and crashing into the sideboard. His face was pale, bruised from the night before, his eyes bloodshot with pure fury and unadulterated fear. "You... how are you still breathing?! Security! Shoot him! Shoot both of them!"
Four armed private guards stepped out from the corners of the dining hall, pulling silenced pistols from their shoulder holsters.
Before a single guard could raise a weapon, Elena moved.
She unclipped two concealed throw-blades from her belt and flicked her wrist with deadly, elegant speed. The sharp silver steel buried itself clean through the wrists of the two guards on the left, sending their weapons clattering to the floor alongside their agonized screams.
At the exact same time, Jaxith didn't even look at the two guards on the right. He simply flicked his thumb.
The shadows clinging to the heavy velvet curtains shot across the room like black whips, wrapping around the guards' throats and slamming them face-first into the stone pillars with bone-cracking force. They dropped like dead weight, unconscious before they hit the ground.
Silence fell over the room, heavy and suffocating. The eight board members backed away from the table in horror, their faces drained of color.
"Is that the best security two hundred million dollars can buy, Father?" Jaxith asked softly, taking slow, deliberate steps toward the head of the table. "You've grown soft since you left me in that burning alley five years ago."
Arthur Vance’s face turned from shock to a mask of cold, calculating hatred. He straightened his back, resting his palms flat on the white tablecloth, trying desperately to maintain his hold over the room. "You were a weak boy then, Jaxith. A disgrace to the Vance bloodline. You think coming back with a few street tricks and a Rostova girl on your arm frightens me?"
"I don't expect you to be frightened, Arthur," Jaxith replied smoothly, pulling out a chair at the center of the table for Elena. She sat down with effortless elegance, crossing her long legs and watching the patriarch like a predator eyeing its prey. "I expect you to sign over control of Vance Corp."
Julian let out a hysterical, manic laugh from the far side of the table. "You're insane! You have nothing! You bought one shipping route at the auction last night, but Father holds seventy percent of the master voting shares! You're an exiled ghost with no standing in the Eastern Trade Alliance!"
"Is that what they told you?" Elena spoke up, her voice a sharp, seductive purr that silenced Julian instantly. She pulled an encrypted glass tablet from her leather clutch and tossed it onto the center of the dining table. The screen projected a three-dimensional holographic ledger over the half-eaten dinner plates.
"Read the green line, Julian," Elena instructed coldly.
Julian stumbled forward, peering at the floating glowing text. As his eyes scanned the legal documents, his jaw slacked, and the color completely drained from his face once more.
"This... this is impossible..." Julian stammered, backing away as if the projection were a venomous snake. "The Zurich reserves... the trade route bonds... how do you have thirty-four percent of Vance Corp’s underlying debt?"
"Because your head of security, Marcus, was very thorough in selling out your dark accounts before I executed him," Jaxith said, stopping right behind his father's chair. He rested his hands lightly on the back of Arthur’s seat, leaning down until his lips were inches from the patriarch's ear. "And when Elena signed our engagement pact last night, her family's holdings automatically merged with my debt claims. Together, we hold fifty-one percent of the total voting power."
"You lying bastard!" Arthur roared, slamming his fist onto the table. "The Alliance will never validate an engagement born out of blackmail!"
"The Alliance already validated it ten minutes ago," Jaxith whispered. "The 45-carat Sun-Drop Diamond is on her finger, Arthur. The charter is sealed. As of midnight, I am the majority shareholder of Vance Corp."
Arthur reached into his jacket, his hand moving toward a hidden snub-nosed revolver tucked into his vest. "I built this empire with blood, Jaxith! I will kill you myself before I let an ungrateful bastard tear it down!"
Jaxith didn't pull a weapon. He didn't even step back.
Instead, the temperature in the dining hall plummeted instantly. Frost flared across the polished wine glasses. The ambient candlelight turned a dark, eerie shade of indigo as a dense wave of Sovereign Shadow Mana poured out from Jaxith’s body, swirling around Arthur Vance like a tightening python.
The moment Arthur pulled the revolver from his vest, the shadows lashed out. They wrapped around the steel barrel, freezing the metal instantly until it shattered into useless fragments inside Arthur's hand.
Arthur screamed as the cold shadow energy seeped into his skin, pinning his arms to his sides and binding him tightly to his carved oak chair. He couldn't move a single muscle; the dark power suffocated his lungs, forcing him to look up into the terrifying, glowing crimson eyes of his exiled son.
"You broke my ribs with an iron pipe, Arthur," Jaxith said softly, his voice echoing with an unnatural, ancient weight that shook the very foundations of the estate. "You locked the door while the fire burned. You told me the Vance bloodline only respects power."
Jaxith leaned down further, pressing his hand over Arthur’s chest, directly over his heart. The patriarch gasped for air, his eyes wide with unadulterated terror as he felt the dark mana pulsing dangerously close to his vital organs.
"Look at me," Jaxith commanded softly. "Who is weak now?"
"Jaxith... please..." Julian sobbed from the corner, dropping to his knees on the hard floor, completely broken. "Don't kill us... take the shares! Take the company! Just don't kill us!"
Jaxith didn't take his eyes off his father. He let the silence stretch for five agonizing seconds, letting the cold terror sink deep into Arthur's soul, before slowly retracting the shadow mana back into his skin.
Arthur slumped forward against the table, gasping violently for air, clutching his chest as if he had just been pulled from the depths of a frozen ocean.
Jaxith straightened his suit jacket, casually adjusting his cuffs as if nothing extraordinary had happened.
"I won't kill you tonight, Arthur," Jaxith said, his tone returning to a calm, velvet smoothness. "Death is far too easy an escape for what you did to me. I want you alive. I want you to sit in this decaying house and watch from the sidelines as Elena and I strip away every dollar, every ship, and every piece of influence you ever possessed."
Elena stood up from her chair, walking over to join Jaxith. She looked down at the shivering patriarch with cold disdain. "The emergency board meeting is scheduled for eight o'clock tomorrow morning at Vance Tower. Make sure you're dressed appropriately, Arthur. It will be your last day as Chairman."
Jaxith offered his arm to Elena. She looped her hand through his, leaning her head slightly toward his shoulder as they turned their backs on the ruined dining hall.
"Jaxith!" Arthur choked out, his voice hoarse and broken as he dragged his face up from the tablecloth. "You think you've won?! The Obsidian Syndicate... Viktor Kane... he won't let you hold Aethelgard! The Apex Council will tear you to pieces!"
Jaxith paused at the shattered threshold, turning his head slightly to look back over his shoulder. A dark, predatory smile curved his lips in the dim light.
"Let them try," Jaxith said quietly. "I need fresh bodies to build my new foundation anyway."
Without another word, Jaxith and Elena walked out into the grand hallway of the estate, their footsteps echoing through the hollow mansion. Behind them, the board members scrambled for the exits, leaving Arthur and Julian alone in the ruins of their short-lived dominance.
Outside, a sleek, black armored sedan waited at the base of the estate steps, its engine humming in the cool night air. Kaelen opened the rear door as they approached, bowing his head respectfully.
"The board members are already scrambling to liquidate their personal shares, My Lord," Kaelen reported quietly. "And Viktor Kane's vanguard unit has been spotted entering the lower harbor."
"Good," Jaxith said, helping Elena into the plush leather backseat before stepping in beside her. "Let Kane come. Tomorrow we take the tower, and by nightfall, we hunt the syndicate."
Elena settled into the seat beside him, her dark eyes reflecting the neon lights of the city skyline as the heavy armored door slammed shut. "You really enjoyed making him bleed, didn't you?"
Jaxith looked at her, his expression unreadable as the vehicle accelerated down the long winding driveway. "I don't enjoy it, Elena. I'm just executing a contract. And my debt hasn't been paid in full yet."
Elena reached out, her fingers lightly trailing along his jawline, touching the small scab where her blade had cut him hours earlier. "Then make sure you stay alive to collect it, Shadow Sovereign."
Jaxith grabbed her hand, his grip tight and warm, pulling her closer into the dark interior of the car as they sped toward the heart of Aethelgard.
