Cold steel clicked against the solid oak bedpost as a pair of matte-black tactical handcuffs locked Jaxith’s right wrist in place.

Jaxith didn't pull against the restraint. He sat on the edge of the king-sized bed in the top-floor penthouse of the Aethelgard Grand Hotel, watching Elena Rostova adjust the silk lapels of her black robe in the vanity mirror. The ambient lights of the city skyline reflected off the panoramic glass behind her, painting her sharp, breathtaking silhouette in neon blue and deep crimson.

"You really don't trust me, do you?" Jaxith asked smoothly, his voice a low, velvet hum in the quiet room.

Elena turned around, a small suppressed pistol resting loosely in her right hand, her dark eyes flashing with a dangerous, electric intensity. "I trust a man who bids two hundred million dollars to bankrupt his brother. I don't trust a man who can manipulate black lightning and walk through bullets without a scratch."

She stepped slowly toward the bed, the hem of her silk robe parting with every stride, revealing the sharp line of her lethal thigh-holster. She stopped right in front of him, leaning down until her dark, fragrant hair fell over his shoulder, her breath warm against his jaw.

"You knew Marcus was going to betray my father three days ago," Elena murmured, bringing the cold tip of her pistol barrel up to rest lightly against the center of his chest, right over his heart. "You let him take the syndicate's money so you could corner me into signing that engagement pact."

Jaxith leaned forward into the weapon, forcing the steel barrel to press deeper into his silk shirt. His dark eyes locked onto hers, completely devoid of fear, glowing with that subtle, terrifying shadow mana just beneath the surface.

"I gave you an empire, Elena," Jaxith whispered, his left hand—unrestrained—moving up to gently cup the back of her neck, his thumb tracing the smooth skin behind her ear. "Marcus would have destroyed your family with or without me. The difference is, I gave you the blade to cut his throat yourself."

Elena’s pulse spiked under his touch. She didn't pull back. The physical attraction between them was an open flame—volatile, destructive, and entirely inescapable. Every time they touched, it wasn't a gentle spark; it was two apex predators testing each other's limits.

"You're a arrogant bastard, Vance," she purred, her eyes dropping to his lips for a fraction of a second before snapping back to his gaze.

"And you're holding a gun to your fiancé’s chest," Jaxith replied, his lips curving into a slow, ruthless smile. "Are you going to shoot me, or are you going to kiss me?"

Elena slid her hand up his chest, her fingers gripping the lapels of his open shirt, pulling him an inch closer. "If I kiss you, it's a strategic maneuver."

"Call it whatever you want," Jaxith murmured.

Before their lips could meet, a sharp, metallic ping echoed from the military satellite terminal resting on the nightstand.

Red warning lights instantly flashed across the dark glass of the penthouse windows. The mechanical locks on the balcony doors disengaged with a loud pneumatic hiss, and the central air conditioning shut off, dropping the room into sudden, dead silence.

Elena froze, her pistol instantly dropping from Jaxith's chest and aiming toward the balcony. "The perimeter sensors just went dead."

"Not dead," Jaxith corrected her, his calm tone instantly shifting into sharp, tactical focus. "Bypassed. Someone just uploaded an EMP pulse from inside the hotel's main server room."

With a single, effortless jerk of his right arm, Jaxith unleashed a fraction of his Sovereign Core. Solid black shadow mana surged through his arm into the tactical handcuffs, shattering the hardened steel links into fine dust like dry ice.

Elena didn't even look surprised. She snapped her pistol’s safety off and backed toward the edge of the bed, her eyes scanning the dark corners of the room. "Viktor Kane's vanguard?"

"No," Jaxith said, standing up and pulling his dark suit jacket onto his broad shoulders. "Kane moves like a hammer. This is precise. Silent. It’s an internal breach."

*Thump.*

A heavy object hit the floor directly beneath the bed.

Jaxith’s eyes narrowed as a faint, high-pitched electronic whine began to resonate through the hardwood floorboards. He reached out, grabbing Elena by her waist in a split-second reaction, and threw his weight backward just as a blinding flash of white thermal fire erupted from beneath the bed frame.

*BOOM!*

The shockwave blew the king-sized bed into splinters, shattering the panoramic glass windows into millions of glittering shards that rained down over the city forty stories below. Freezing night air and torrential rain rushed into the luxurious suite, whipping Elena’s silk robe and dark hair into a storm of black and crimson.

Jaxith slammed his palm onto the floorboards before the flames could consume the room.

*Sovereign Barrier!*

A massive wave of pitch-black mana exploded from his skin, forming an impenetrable dome of shadow that instantly smothered the thermal explosion, freezing the fire in mid-air and snuffing out the heat like cold water over embers.

Through the clearing smoke and rain, four shadows dropped through the shattered skylight above. They wore matte-black tactical gear with no insignia, wielding silent submachine guns and tactical combat knives designed for close-quarters assassination.

"Target confirmed," the lead assassin rasped, his voice modulated through a vocal scrambler. "Eliminate the Shadow Sovereign. Capture the Rostova heiress."

"Capture?" Elena laughed, a dark, lethal sound that cut through the roaring storm wind.

She stepped out from behind Jaxith’s protective shadow barrier, her pistol barking three times in rapid succession.

*Pfft. Pfft. Pfft.*

The lead assassin ducked, the heavy caliber rounds ricocheting off his carbon-fiber helmet, but the third shot caught the second assassin clean through the throat joint of his body armor. He collapsed onto the ruined floor, choking on his own blood as he slid through the rain.

"They aren't Syndicate!" Elena yelled over the wind, reloading her magazine with blind, practiced speed. "Look at the night-vision tech—that’s military-grade equipment from the Western Bloc!"

"The Council of Seven," Jaxith growled, his voice dropping into an octave that made the glass under their feet vibrate. "They didn't wait for Julian to fail. They sent their elite hunters."

The remaining two assassins rushed forward, splitting up to attack from both flanks. The one on the left pulled a high-frequency shock blade, driving it toward Elena’s ribs with terrifying velocity.

Elena didn't retreat. She ducked under the whistling blade, grabbed the assassin's wrist, and drove her heel hard into his kneecap, snapping the bone backward with a sickening crunch. As the assassin fell, she twisted his arm, driving his own shock blade clean through his sternum.

Meanwhile, the assassin on the right fired a full salvo of submachine gun rounds directly into Jaxith’s chest at point-blank range.

The bullets never touched his clothes.

The dark shadows surrounding Jaxith formed a dense, writhing vortex that caught the lead projectiles in mid-air, melting the copper and lead into useless drops of liquid metal before they could hit his skin.

Jaxith stepped through the swirling metal rain, his hand shooting forward like a striking cobra. He clamped his dark, mana-infused fingers around the assassin's neck, lifting the two-hundred-pound armored man off his feet with a single arm.

"Who issued the Excommunicado contract?" Jaxith demanded, his glowing crimson eyes locking onto the assassin's dark visor.

"The... Apex... Council..." the assassin choked out, his hands clawing uselessly at Jaxith’s iron grip. "You... cannot... stop... the Seven..."

"I don't plan on stopping them," Jaxith whispered softly into the man's ear. "I plan on executing them."

Jaxith tightened his grip. A surge of dark kinetic mana blasted through his fingers, crushing the assassin's throat and spine instantly. He tossed the lifeless body out through the shattered panoramic window, watching it fall into the dark abyss of Aethelgard’s lower streets.

The penthouse fell quiet once more, save for the howling rain and the distant sound of police sirens echoing across the city.

Elena stood amidst the bloody wreckage, her silk robe ruined, her hands stained with dark crimson. She turned to look at Jaxith, her breathing shallow, her eyes burning with an intense, unyielding fire that matched his dark intensity step-for-step.

"They know we're here," Elena said, stepping through the broken glass until she stood directly in front of him. "The hotel is compromised. The board meeting is in five hours."

"Then we don't sleep," Jaxith said smoothly.

He reached out, his long fingers catching her wrist, pulling her close against his chest once more. The shadow barrier around them slowly dissolved, letting the cool rain wash over their skin, but the heat between them remained white-hot.

Elena looked down at his chest, where his shirt was torn, revealing the solid, sculpted lines of his torso and the faint, glowing mark of the Sovereign Core pulsing beneath his ribs. She reached out, her fingers tracing the glowing lines of power.

"You really are a monster, Jaxith Vance," she whispered, her voice dropping into a seductive, dangerous murmur.

"I am your monster, Elena," Jaxith replied, his hand sliding up her back, anchoring her against him. "For six months, I am the weapon you use to crush your enemies. And you are the queen who sits beside my throne."

Elena tilted her head up, her lips hovering an inch from his. "And after six months?"

Jaxith’s dark eyes flashed with an unmistakable, possessive glint. "After six months... I keep you."

Elena let out a soft, dark laugh, her fingers tightening in his hair as she pulled his face down to hers, sealing their dark alliance in a fierce, demanding kiss that tasted of rain, gunpowder, and blood.

Outside, the storm raged on over Aethelgard, but inside the ruined penthouse, two apex predators had just agreed to burn the world down together.
