A microscopic crimson laser dot danced across the center of Elena Rostova’s forehead.

In the blinding flash of three dozen media cameras on the steps of Vance Tower, Jaxith saw the subtle red light a split second before the optic sensor registered the distance.

Without a word, Jaxith grabbed Elena by the waist, spun her behind his body, and slammed her against the heavy granite pillar of the grand entrance.

*THWACK!*

A high-caliber sniper round tore through the ambient noise of shouting reporters, shattering the armored glass revolving door behind them. Concrete dust and razor-sharp glass sprayed over the screaming crowd of journalists. Microphones dropped to the ground, high-heeled shoes clattered against the stone, and total pandemonium erupted across the plaza as people scrambled for cover.

"Sniper! North building, six hundred yards!" Elena barked, instantly crouching low behind the granite pillar, her hand sliding beneath her tailored blazer toward her hidden firearm. She didn't panic; her dark eyes were blazing with tactical precision.

"Stay down," Jaxith commanded, his voice a low, terrifying rumble that cut through the hysteria surrounding them.

Jaxith didn't take cover. He stepped straight out from behind the granite pillar into the open sunlight, his tailored obsidian suit immaculate, his stance broad and completely unyielding.

Across the plaza, atop the glass roof of the Aethelgard Financial Center, a lone gunman clad in dark camouflage raised his barrel to make the second shot. Through his high-powered scope, the assassin centered his crosshairs directly between Jaxith’s dark, unwavering eyes.

The assassin squeezed the trigger.

*THWACK!*

The supersonic round shot through the air, traveling at three thousand feet per second. But the moment the bullet crossed the ten-yard perimeter around Jaxith, the air density warped.

A thick, swirling vortex of solid Shadow Mana erupted around Jaxith’s raised hand. The lead projectile hit the invisible wall of dark kinetic force, instantly losing its velocity and halting dead in mid-air two inches from Jaxith’s palm.

Jaxith casually reached out with his bare fingers and plucked the spinning, hot lead bullet out of the air like a falling leaf.

Down on the pavement, several brave news cameramen who were still filming behind bulletproof broadcast vans gasped in absolute disbelief. The live broadcast feed was streaming across every major global business channel, broadcasting Jaxith’s impossible feat to millions of viewers worldwide.

Jaxith held the hot bullet between his thumb and index finger, looking straight into the lenses of the surrounding news cameras.

"To whoever paid for that bullet," Jaxith said into the nearest broadcast microphone, his voice amplified across the plaza through the news crew's speakers, calm and smooth as velvet. "You have twenty-four hours to step out of the shadows and present yourself to me. If you fail, I will burn your entire organization down to the bare dirt."

Jaxith dropped the mangled piece of lead onto the granite steps with a sharp metallic clatter.

Elena stepped up beside him, her suppressed pistol concealed beneath her folded arms, her crimson lips curved into a sharp, lethal smile for the cameras. "You really know how to make an entrance for a press conference, fiancé."

"The media likes a show," Jaxith replied smoothly, taking her arm as the heavy titanium emergency doors of Vance Tower slid open behind them. "And Julian is waiting inside."

They walked into the soaring marble lobby of Vance Tower, leaving the chaos of the plaza behind as the reinforced doors sealed with a heavy pneumatic thud. The vast lobby was filled with armed private security guards wearing the Vance Corporate logo, but not a single guard dared to raise a weapon as Jaxith walked past. The terrifying display outside had already been broadcast to every monitor in the building.

Kaelen stepped out from the private executive elevator, holding an encrypted leather binder. "My Lord, the board members have all gathered in the 80th-floor boardroom. Julian Vance is currently trying to motion for an emergency proxy vote to freeze your assets."

"Let him try," Jaxith said, his leather shoes clicking loudly against the polished floor as he led Elena toward the private express lift. "Is the media feed connected to the boardroom screen?"

"Yes, My Lord," Kaelen confirmed with a dark smirk. "They watched you catch the bullet live."

Inside the high-speed elevator, the digital floor indicator climbed rapidly toward the top of the tower. Elena leaned against the brass handrail, turning her sharp gaze toward Jaxith. She reached out, her cool fingers lightly touching his palm where he had caught the bullet. There wasn't a single burn or scratch on his skin.

"Your control over the Sovereign Core is refining," Elena noted softly, her dark eyes evaluating him with a mixture of fascinations and deep strategic calculation. "Five years ago, you couldn't manipulate kinetic force at that range."

"Five years ago, I was holding back," Jaxith replied, closing his hand around hers, his grip firm, possessive, and warm. "I thought loyalty to family meant something. Now I know that the only thing this world respects is absolute dominance."

Elena stepped closer, her chest brushing his lapels. "And what about us, Jaxith? Is this pact just about dominance?"

Jaxith looked down into her sharp eyes, his dark pupils flickering with a faint, dangerous crimson light. "You match my darkness step-for-step, Elena. You aren't my subordinate. You are my equal. But if you cross me... I won't hesitate to treat you like an enemy."

"I wouldn't expect anything less," Elena purred, her lips brushing his jawline just as the elevator chimed, indicating their arrival at the 80th floor.

The heavy double doors swept open to reveal the grand boardroom.

Around a massive oval table made of imported dark mahogany sat the thirty executive board members of Vance Corp. At the far end of the table sat Julian Vance, his suit rumpled, his face pale, frantically tapping on his digital voting tablet while his father, Arthur, sat beside him in a wheelchair, looking hollow and broken.

"This meeting is illegal!" Julian screamed the moment Jaxith and Elena walked into the room, his voice cracking with desperation. "He's an intruder! He's a terrorist! Look at what he did outside!"

Jaxith didn't answer. He walked straight to the head of the table, pulling out the massive high-backed leather armchair that had belonged to the Chairman for thirty years. He sat down casually, resting his hands flat on the polished mahogany. Elena took the chair directly to his right, placing her leather clutch on the table with a sharp thud.

"Julian," Jaxith said, his voice quiet yet carrying an immense, suffocating weight that made every board member in the room drop their heads. "You have thirty seconds to resign your position as Chief Executive Officer and sign over your remaining three percent of equity."

"Never!" Julian spat, slamming his fists onto the table. "The Eastern Trade Alliance charter clearly states—"

"The Alliance charter was updated twenty minutes ago," Elena interrupted coldly, sliding her tablet across the table toward the board members.

The holographic projector in the center of the table flared to life, displaying the official digital seal of the Eastern Trade Alliance, signed by the three founding families.

"Rostova Enterprises has officially merged its maritime routes with Jaxith Vance’s shadow holdings," Elena announced, her sharp voice echoing clearly through the silent room. "Together, we hold fifty-seven percent of the total voting power. Julian Vance is removed from his post effective immediately."

Panicked whispers broke out among the board members. Several executives immediately began signing their digital proxy votes over to Jaxith, abandoning Julian like rats fleeing a sinking ship.

Julian backed away from the table, his eyes wide with unadulterated madness. "You think you've won?! You think taking a title makes you safe?! Viktor Kane is coming to Aethelgard tonight! The Obsidian Syndicate will erase you both!"

"Viktor Kane is already late," Jaxith said smoothly.

Jaxith raised his hand and snapped his fingers.

The giant wall-mounted monitor behind Julian flickered, switching from the stock market tickers to a live satellite feed. The video showed a massive superyacht docked at the Aethelgard lower docks—Viktor Kane's mobile command unit.

Before Julian could comprehend what he was seeing, dark black tendrils of Shadow Mana erupted from the ocean water surrounding the yacht, wrapping around the hull like a giant kraken. Within seconds, the multi-million-dollar vessel was crushed inward like a aluminum soda can and dragged straight into the dark depths of the harbor, leaving only floating debris behind.

The entire boardroom plummeted into horrifying, dead silence. Several board members gasped, clutching their chests, while Julian collapsed back into his chair, his jaw slacking in total despair.

Jaxith stood up slowly, resting his palms on the table, leaning forward toward his terrified older brother.

"Aethelgard belongs to me now, Julian," Jaxith growled, his voice vibrating with the raw, terrifying power of the Sovereign Core. "Security! Escort the former CEO out of my building. If he ever sets foot in Vance Tower again... throw him off the roof."

Four heavy tactical enforcers dressed in black uniforms bearing Jaxith’s new shadow crest stepped into the boardroom, grabbing Julian by his arms and dragging him out kicking and screaming into the hallway.

Arthur Vance sat silently in his wheelchair, looking up at his exiled son with tears of pure defeat streaming down his withered cheeks. "You've become a monster, Jaxith..."

"No, Father," Jaxith said softly, walking over to stand beside Elena as the remaining board members stood up to bow in submission. "You made me a monster. I just learned how to enjoy it."

Jaxith offered his hand to Elena. She took it, her long fingers intertwining with his, her red lips curving into a triumphant smile as the board members began chanting their allegiance to the new Chairman.

The first phase of their revenge was complete. But outside the high-altitude glass of Vance Tower, dark clouds were gathering over the horizon, bringing the shadow of an even greater war to Aethelgard.
