A jagged line of lightning split the black night sky, illuminating the rain-slicked concrete roof of the Aethelgard Financial Center.

Jaxith Vance stood at the very edge of the fifty-story drop, his leather trench coat whipping violently in the gale-force wind. Surrounding him in a tight, deadly semi-circle were twenty elite mercenaries clad in night-vision gear and high-tech carbon-fiber armor, their silenced assault rifles raised and locked onto his chest.

"You should have stayed inside Vance Tower, ghost!" the mercenary commander bellowed over the roar of the thunder, his red optic visor glowing like a demon in the dark. "The Apex Council put ten billion dollars on your head! Nobody survives a hit from the Eclipse Unit!"

Jaxith didn't raise his hands. He didn't pull a weapon. He casually reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a silver metal lighter, and flicked the flame to life to light a black cigarette. The small orange flame danced against his cold, sculpted features, completely untroubled by the howling storm.

"Ten billion?" Jaxith asked smoothly, exhaling a thin stream of gray smoke into the freezing rain. "I'm offended. The Council cheapened my price."

"Fire!" the commander screamed.

Twenty silenced barrels spat lethal fire in unison. A hail of armor-piercing bullets tore through the sheet of rain, aiming to reduce Jaxith to raw meat in a fraction of a second.

*CRACK!*

Jaxith didn't dodge. He slammed his heel onto the wet concrete roof.

*Sovereign Domain: Nightfall.*

The small flame of his silver lighter didn't die—it expanded instantly, turning into a pitch-black shockwave of raw Shadow Mana that exploded outward from his boots. The ambient light from the city below was swallowed whole. The storm rain froze mid-air, suspending thousands of water droplets like suspended glass needles in a dark vacuum.

The incoming salvo of high-velocity bullets hit the black shockwave and froze dead in mid-air, hovering inches from Jaxith’s face.

"What... what is this?!" a mercenary yelled, his voice cracking with sudden, unadulterated terror as his night-vision goggles glitched into static. "The optics are completely dead! I can't see!"

"He's not human!" another panicked voice shrieked into the comms channel.

Through the impenetrable darkness, Jaxith walked slowly toward the line of shooters, his leather shoes making quiet, deliberate splashes in the puddles. With every step he took, the shadows writhing around his feet rose like living black serpents.

"You mercenaries serve money," Jaxith’s voice echoed through the dark, coming from every direction at once, impossibly deep and resonant. "I command the darkness that swallows it."

Jaxith flicked his fingers.

The suspended water droplets in the air turned into razor-sharp icicles infused with black mana. They shot forward through the dark like a storm of black needles.

*Thwack! Thwack! Thwack!*

Crisp, sickening impacts rang out over the rain. Armor was punctured like parchment paper. Weapons were sheared in half. Screams of agony were cut short as the black shadow tendrils dragged the mercenaries off their feet, throwing them violently against the concrete pillars or flinging them over the edge of the building into the void.

In less than ten seconds, nineteen elite killers lay motionless on the roof, their carbon-fiber armor shattered and their dark blood washing away in the rain.

Only the mercenary commander remained standing, his knees shaking uncontrollably, his assault rifle slipping from his numb, wet fingers. He backed away until his heels hit the low ledge of the rooftop, staring into the dark void where his squad had just been eradicated.

Jaxith stepped out of the black fog, his obsidian suit untouched by a single drop of rain or blood. His eyes flared with an unmistakable, terrifying crimson glow in the pitch-black night.

"Who paid the deposit on the Excommunicado contract?" Jaxith demanded, standing two feet from the trembling commander.

"I... I don't know his name!" the commander whimpered, clutching his side where a shadow blade had grazed his ribs. "It came from a dark bank in Zurich! An encrypted routing number from the Apex Council!"

"Wrong answer," Jaxith murmured softly.

He reached out, grabbing the commander by the throat, and lifted the two-hundred-pound man into the air with one hand. The shadow mana around Jaxith’s palm seeped directly into the commander's skin, turning his veins black and freezing his lungs from the inside out.

"Wait!" the commander choked out, his eyes wide with bulging horror. "The... the handler! The transaction was approved by a Rostova key! Someone inside Elena’s family... approved the hit!"

Jaxith’s grip tightened, his dark brows furrowing slightly as a sharp, dangerous chill rippled through his chest. "Say that again."

"Lord... Lord Rostova’s brother... Viktor Rostova!" the commander gasped out his final breath. "He signed the authorization!"

Jaxith tossed the dead commander off the fifty-story roof without another word, watching the body disappear into the neon fog of Aethelgard’s lower streets.

Behind him, the heavy metal door to the rooftop staircase creaked open.

Elena Rostova stepped out into the storm, wearing a black leather trench coat over her silk gown, her custom suppressed pistol held steadily at her waist. She stopped five paces away, her dark eyes scanning the scattered bodies of the Eclipse Unit before looking up at Jaxith.

"Kaelen told me you came up here alone," Elena said, her voice cutting clearly through the howling wind. "I see you didn't leave any for me."

Jaxith turned around slowly, his crimson eyes fading back into their deep, hypnotic dark obsidian hue. He stepped toward her, his posture rigid, his intensity so suffocating that even the rain seemed to part around him.

"Your family house has another snake, Elena," Jaxith said softly, stopping right in front of her until their chests almost touched.

Elena didn't flinch. She tilted her chin up, looking straight into his cold, terrifying face. "Viktor."

Jaxith’s eyes narrowed slightly. "You knew?"

"I suspected," Elena replied calmly, her breath misting between them in the cold night air. "My uncle has been trying to liquidate our European reserves for three months. He was Julian Vance's secret silent partner in the Eastern Trade Alliance."

"He authorized the Excommunicado contract on your head," Jaxith growled, reaching out to wrap his long fingers firmly around her hip, pulling her flush against him. "He tried to have you murdered on the steps of Vance Tower today."

Elena reached up, her cool leather-gloved hand resting flat against his chest, feeling the heavy, thunderous pulse of the Sovereign Core throbbing beneath his suit. A sharp, dangerous smirk touched her lips.

"Then we don't just take Vance Corp tomorrow, Jaxith," Elena whispered, her voice dropping into a seductive, lethal purr. "We hunt my uncle together."

Jaxith stared down at her sharp, breathtaking face. She didn't display a shred of weakness, fear, or hesitation. While any other woman in Aethelgard would have cowered in terror at the display of dark mana he had just unleashed, Elena stood in the rain with him, hungry for the blood of their shared enemies.

"You really are a lethal piece of work, Miss Rostova," Jaxith murmured, his grip on her hip tightening, pulling her so close she could feel the intense, dark heat radiating from his body.

"I'm your fiancée," Elena corrected him, leaning up on her tiptoes until her wet lips brushed against his ear. "And an heiress who doesn't like sharing her inheritance with traitors. Now... are you going to kiss me in the rain, or are we going to stand over these dead bodies all night?"

Jaxith didn't give her a choice.

He wrapped his other hand around the nape of her neck, tilting her head back, and slammed his lips onto hers in a fierce, possessive kiss. It was hard, demanding, and overflowing with the raw, volatile friction that pulled them together like two colliding storms.

Elena gasped into his mouth, her arms winding around his neck, her fingers digging into his wet hair as she kissed him back with equal, fiery intensity, completely surrendering to the dark power of the Shadow Sovereign.

When he finally pulled back, her dark eyes were blazing, her cheeks flushed, and her chest heaving against his.

Jaxith wiped a stray drop of rain from her lip with his thumb, a dark, predatory smile finally touching his face.

"Kaelen," Jaxith spoke into his collar comms without breaking eye contact with Elena.

*"I am here, My Lord,"* his lieutenant responded instantly over the ear piece.

"Trace Viktor Rostova’s offshore accounts. Lock down every trade vessel carrying his crest in the Eastern Harbor."

*Consider it done, Sovereign."

Jaxith offered his arm to Elena. "Shall we go dismantle your uncle's life, my queen?"

"Lead the way, monster," Elena replied, looping her arm tightly through his as they turned away from the rooftop execution ground, stepping back into the shadows of the city they were taking by storm.
